Principal Visit to Year Four

In my visits to Year Four, I was particularly interested in Mrs Patsalides’ class. Throughout the week the students have been busy investigating the genre of Report Writing. In their reports the students wrote various versions of the Three Little Pigs. I was so impressed with their level of writing that I have included them below for you to see. Thank you Mrs Patsalides and the Year Four Students for the different versions of the Three Little Pigs. For more stories from Year Four, visit our school Facebook page.

The Flummoxed Bacon Streak Wolf Everyone get out of your houses and run around like mad. Cut!!! Just wait no stay inside and hide. There’s an on the loose run he’s already taken down 2 houses and murdered 2 innocent pigs If you see him lurking around call the crime stoppers at 000 witness say that they saw the wolf coming to the houses and blowing them down and eating the pigs. It was a tragedy for the witness. By Jai Gill, 603

Daily Prophet News Breaking News: Bad wolf blows innocent pigs houses down and saying it was all a cold and all he needed was a cup of sugar. Last night at 5:15 pm a wolf had been at three little pigs houses. He blew it down with a cold according to wolf. The police are looking for the big bad wolf’s grandma and brother to ask some questions about the wolf. “He was only baking a cake for me. All he needed was a cup of sugar” said his grandma.“He’s innocent”, said his brother. If you want the wolf to go away, come and help us find him, but if you’re scared lock your houses. One pig survived, so he is helping us find the wolf. Actually he is screaming for his brothers to come back. More information as it comes in By Francine Sergi, 603

The true story of the Two Houses At 2:00 in the afternoon, it was sunset. That means lock your windows and doors because when it’s a full moon, the Big Fat Wolf comes! The police are searching for this wild animal on the loose. This is serious. We have to catch this wild animal before it’s too late. This animal has sneezed down two houses. Now he’s at a brick house. Will he sneeze it down and what will he sneeze down next? By Talia Armanini, 603

Round Two Enrolments for Kindergarten 2016 –Choosing a Catholic Education With the first round of enrolments now completed, St Patrick’s is now accepting placements for Kindergarten 2016 Round two. Children who turn 5 before 31 July 2016 are eligible for enrolment at Kindergarten. Our Catholic school does not have any enrolment zone and accepts enquires from all over Griffith and surrounding Villages. If you would like to discuss readiness for school or any matters regarding enrolment for your child please make an appointment with our school office. Mr Alan Wedesweiler continues to offer information in our fortnightly newsletters for families to assist them in making an important decision. Phone 69642888 for an enrolment package today.

Morning Tea in the New Year Two Learning Centre Today we held a morning tea for families in the new classroom block. It was an important gathering because as part of our building brief, we met and recorded some important family stories. Some family stories of migration to settlement in Griffith and what were very difficult times. As we know housing during the Thirties to the Sixties only had one bathroom and a possible toilet in the backyard detached from the house with big families sharing rooms. During these times, many of our families in Griffith assisted Fr O’Dea and others to build not only our Church but a Catholic School too! The stories collected from our families will be etched into our new buildings to ensure the story of our past continues well into the future. My sincere gratitude and respect to our families who have established our parish and school to be what it is today. As the baton is passed on to our current families, we are now charged with the responsibility to ensure our children have the best facilities and Catholic education as our parents and grandparents. Upon reflection from listening to our parents and grandparents I have gained some valuable insights as a father, a teacher and as member of this fantastic community in which I have shared below. Never expect, assume or demand –listen to our Grandparents wisdom! Life can be simple, again, just focus on one thing at a time! Breathe, be present and do your best with what is in front of you! Put something beautiful in the world that was not there before! Things that have changed your perspective taught us lessons and enabled our spirit to grow! Before befriending others you have to be your own friend! As long as you are worried about what others think of you, you are owned by them! The more we adapt to the situations in life the more powerful your highs will be-being at peace brings a state of acceptance of what is here right now –today. An honest enemy is better than a friend who lies. If you are thankful for what you do have we will end up having more. The wisdom through story telling enables us all to continue to learn, appreciate and to have faith. On behalf of all the students, the parish and the community, I will ensure your stories are transmitted across the generations at St Patrick’s and Sacred Heart. Thank You!

Building Update This week our Year Two students will be moving out of the Hall into their new Learning Centre in preparation for the next term. I wish to extend my sincere thanks to all our Year Two families for their patience throughout the building process. From all the feedback I have received and that on Facebook, I know our staff and students will thrive in their learning space. I wish to extend a special mention to our Year Two staff who throughout the Christmas holidays, over many weekends and after school hours have given their personal time to ensure the smooth transition of two very big moves. The furniture will arrive on the 24

th of June and if any parents can assist with this move

please let the Year Two staff know.

Catholic Education Welcomes Capital Funding Boost Catholic Education Commission NSW (CECNSW), last week welcomed the NSW Government’s move to increase capital funding to non-government schools over the next four years. CECNSW Acting Chairman Peter Turner said the additional funding would help build new classrooms to meet a forecast 23% growth in enrolments across all school sectors in NSW by 2031. “NSW Catholic schools currently educate almost 254,000 students, or one in five enrolled in this state. “To maintain the status quo, Catholic schools will need to accommodate 58,000 additional students by 2031. This will require us to build 131 new classrooms each year over the next 16 years.” Mr Turner said parents currently provided two-thirds of the capital funding needed in NSW Catholic schools with the remainder coming from the Australian Government (27%) and the NSW Government (7.6%)“The announcement by NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli will help ease the pressure on parents, who have funded the bulk of Catholic school construction for generations of students - and will continue to do so. Thank You All for a Wonderful Term! Term Two like any other is always busy and productive. I wish to acknowledge the staff on behalf of the wonderful school community for the marvellous work they have done this term. Our students love the gift of learning and no doubt our students have been fully engaged from their inspirational teachers throughout the term. As this week is the last week of term, I encourage parents to take a few minutes to personally acknowledge our staff when they meet their teacher at this week’s Parent Teacher Interviews. Parents and Friends of St Patrick’s, I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to the support you have provided to our staff and community particularly the coordination in making 800 dozen lamingtons as part of our fundraising. The success of students at school depends on the mutual support for teachers, students and the wider school community. A growing body of research shows that successful parent engagement improves not only student behaviour and attendance but also positively affects student achievement. The high involvement of parents throughout the term is again clearly evident and documented in our photo gallery on our website. These achievements could not happen without everyone’s positive and ongoing support. On behalf of the staff, a sincere thank you!

P&F Lamingtons On behalf of all the students and staff, I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to the P&F committee for their outstanding achievement in organising and making over 800 dozen yummy lamingtons. I wish to all acknowledge the Jenine Calabria and Calabria Wines for providing the venue and support to our many parent volunteers. Finally a huge “thank you” to all our volunteers who gave their time to make the lamingtons! The funds raised will go towards our vegie garden and outdoor BBQ / Pizza oven area. Such activities are a wonderful way to build new friendships and community. My sincere gratitude to you all!

Transition to School: Coping Skills As part of our ongoing discussion and assistance for parents and students starting school, we here at St. Patrick’s provide the following tips to assist you, as we know it has been of use to other parents and is featured on the KidsMatter website (www.kidsmatter.edu.au) As they grow and develop, all children encounter situations where they feel worried, nervous and sometimes even scared. Starting school involves a big change for your child as they settle into a new environment and begin forming relationships with peers and school staff. Even if your child’s transition to school goes smoothly, it is likely that they will encounter some ups and downs throughout their primary school years. Helping your child to learn coping skills as they start school will allow them to develop and practise skills that will enable them to cope with future changes and challenges. This will help to strengthen your child’s mental health and wellbeing now and into the future. What are coping skills? Coping skills are what we think and what we do to help us get through difficult situations. Your child will begin to learn and use different coping skills from the time they are born. You can build on the skills they are already using, as well as assist them to learn new ones. This may include asking for help, talking with friends, problem solving and taking time out when they need a break. You may also explore how you can help your child manage strong emotions, promote helpful thinking and assist them to break down tasks into smaller, manageable chunks. Following your child’s lead will help you work out what approach will be best for them. For some children, talking about a problem too much may lead to an increase in anxiety.

Thankyou

I trust you enjoy the opportunities that holidays bring to rest, rejuvenate and reflect. Thank you students, staff and parents for your ongoing engagement in discussions about the children’s learning. I encourage you both to continue to “touch base” regularly next term to continue to maximize the learning potential of the students.
