Bryan Beatty, CFP®, AIF® President’s Message

Happy New Year! Last year was an incredibly unpredictable year. The year started as one of the worse January stock market

declines in the history of the market. Then, we had one of the most unconventional political campaigns in most of our lifetimes.

All around the world, conventional thinking is being challenged. So, I want to start the year by saying that this year, let’s be

unconventional as a chapter.

Let’s get our chapter members engaged by encouraging them more than ever, and showing others how easy it is to get involved

with the chapter. “Do One Thing” is a slogan that FPA has been using for a few years now, but what does it really mean? It can

mean all kinds of things from becoming a committee volunteer to volunteering to mentor a new planner. It can also be sharing

content for our social media presence. Or, it could be becoming an active board member. An idea growing in the association

membership community is “Micro” Volunteering. People want to help but they are unsure of the size of the commitment, and so

they are reluctant to volunteer because they feel they don’t have the time. But if you are already doing something that you can

share with our Public Relations Chair, Sam Boyd, he can tweet about it. He can post a video of you telling about a success that

you have enjoyed by helping out a client. This is an idea he has which would feature “Why We Do What We Do”. You can tweet

about our symposium using our hashtag to spread the news of the value of the FPA. You can even volunteer to submit blog

posts, and for those people who actively blog, this would be easy. I think you get the picture.

In January, please attend our Symposium at the Dulles Hyatt for a full day of CE’s and Ethics, along with great content like

Professor Vic Ricciardi, a Behavioral Finance expert, and Andrew Friedman of The Washington Update on the real impact of the

changing administration in Washington. What is the impact of the DOL in light of the elections’ outcomes putting Republicans

in control of all three branches of government? The Symposium program can be found here.

In February, we will host our very successful Career Day for newly minted CFP’s or CFP hopefuls and career changers. This

event gets bigger every year and attracts some of the best talent populating some of the most successful member practices of our

chapter.

March will be our Media training event. Are you looking to get into publications and develop the ability to do your own PR for

your firm? Then this is a must attend event.

In closing, thank you Dan Lash for a great year as a chapter President and leaving me with a solid foundation. Additionally, I

want to thank board members who have moved on from the board for their service, especially Kathleen Sindell who was

instrumental in running many excellent Pro Bono Metro Washington Financial Planning Days and launched a CFP program at

The University of MD during her tenure, as well as, Augie Zullo who has served on the board for as long as I can remember,

covering 12 years of service. Ken Robinson will be retiring from the Board as our past President and Chair, serving 10 years on

the Board, but first he will guide us through a terrific Winter Symposium program offering a multitude of CE and networking

opportunities. Lauren Grove moved to San Francisco and will be a Bay Area member now. Lastly, Yusef Abugideiri steps down

from his PR role. I hope that they all will stay engaged with our chapter.

I am excited to welcome new members to the board, Shellie Peters, Sam Boyd, Mark Cecchini and Christine Damico. I, and all

of our Board Members, look forward to meeting you at our next event.

Best Regards,

Bryan Bryan Beatty, CFP®, AIF®

2017 FPA NCA President

Launching the Encore Group, a new FPA NCA Community

A growing number of newer FPA NCA members are just starting out in our profession as career changers. Like

many of our clients, they are launching second careers – taking the Certified Financial Planner coursework either

online or through a local certification program. This new group will encourage networking between established

planners and new entrants to the field, and will offer opportunities for idea sharing and camaraderie for newly

credentialed planners who don’t quite fit the NexGen mold.

If you are interested in joining the group, please let Susan Chesson know: [email protected]

CONGRATULATIONS TO KAREN P. SCHAEFFER –

INVESTMENT NEWS WOMEN TO WATCH 2016

InvestmentNews is honoring female financial advisers and industry executives who are distinguished leaders at their

firms. These women have advanced the business of providing advice through their leadership, passion, creativity

and willingness to help other women along the way.

Karen P. Schaeffer

Managing member, Schaeffer Financial

“Every once in a while, you have to run up the hill and hope that people are following you,” said Karen Schaeffer,

managing member of Schaeffer Financial, describing the challenges of being a pioneer in the financial planning

industry.

Her experiences running up the hill began in 1979, when she joined one of the first financial planning firms in the

country.

“Because the concept was so unknown, it was hard to make clients understand the need to go through a process –

and that financial planning was a big, broad thing,” Ms. Schaeffer said.

There was also the challenge of being taken seriously by members of related professions.

“There were a lot of naysayers in the investment management, insurance and tax worlds who did not see financial

planning as a profession,” she said.

The work was so new that Ms. Schaeffer and her peers were making up best practices as they went along. And over

the past three decades, she has never stopped, serving in national roles such as board chair for both the CFP Board

and the Financial Planning Standards Board, and leading efforts to set public policy and extend professional

standards worldwide.

“When I started, financial planning was an aspirational idea. We were not only teaching the public, we had to teach

each other,” Ms. Schaeffer said. “We knew we were on to a good thing.”

NEW PLANNER SEARCH ON ONE FPA WEBSITE!

What is FPA PlannerSearch®?

FPA PlannerSearch® is a website that not only provides educational content to consumers on personal financial matters,

but also helps them find and engage CFP® professionals in their area. Through robust search functionality, consumers who

are looking for financial planning guidance and support can search for CFP® professionals who can help.

What role does FPA PlannerSearch® play for me?

The site was constructed to increase the online visibility of CFP® professionals who are also members of FPA. By using

best practices in Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social sharing, and structured data, the site increases the likelihood of

CFP® members of FPA being found online through Google searches. By way of this increased visibility new business

opportunities may emerge.

Who is able to participate in FPA PlannerSearch®?

In order to participate, you must be an FPA member in good standing and a CFP® professional. Members are not

automatically added to the platform, they must opt in. To opt in, please contact the FPA Member Engagement Team at

[email protected]. You can also opt-in online by visiting www.onefpa.org/business-

success/Pages/PlannerSearch.

Why has the platform been changed/improved?

In an increasingly competitive digital landscape, CFP® professionals need to be able to be found online. The changes we

have made to the architecture of the site and search functionality will now better support our members by providing more

visibility online which will lead to new business growth opportunities.

What, specifically, has been done to improve the platform?

As we set out on redeveloping the site and search tool, we did so with three distinct goals:

First was to increase planner findability. The new website’s foundation is built from the perspective of traffic

acquisition. Best practices of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social sharing, and structured data will drive the

architecture of the website so members can be found more often and in more places across the web.

Second was to improve usability. User experience is paramount to findability and engagement. Consumers will enjoy a

streamlined experience and be able to easily accomplish their goal of researching, contacting, and partnering with a

financial planner that meets their unique individual needs.

Third was to expand accessibility. Users seeking to find a financial planner from their desktop, tablet, or smartphone will

be treated to a seamless user experience at their convenience. This will drive increased traffic, interactions, client leads and

– ultimately – help members grow their businesses.

What are some of the new features?

There are a couple new features that you should definitely pay attention to:

Now every planner has a unique URL path to their profile on FPA PlannerSearch®. That means you can share your

profile on the site with anyone by simply providing the URL. It is advisable to provide a link to your profile on

your website, blog, and any other way you can be found online.

Your profile now has a “My Links” section where you can share other places where you are found online. You can

share links to recent media appearances, news items where you appear, personal blog posts, and much more. This

section in particular is very important to helping drive SEO for your profile so be sure to keep it up to date with

your latest links!

Continued from previous page

Your profile also has a “Brochures” section where you can provide brochures and other content specific to your

business.

Also, when a consumer searches for a planner, they will be provided an interactive map where they can view CFP®

professionals within proximity to them. So just because someone may be viewing another planner from your

immediate area, they will now be able to quickly check out your profile as well.

How do I view/edit my profile on the platform?

Updating your profile is the same as the previous iteration of FPA PlannerSearch®. Simply log in to OneFPA.org and click

on “My Profile.” Information that is populated on FPA PlannerSearch® will be identified as such. There is also a

“PlannerSearch” tab on “My Profile” where you can populate information for the “My Links” and “Brochures” sections.

As always, you can get assistance by contacting a member of the FPA Member Engagement Team at

[email protected].

How do I get any new client leads?

The process is the same as before. You will get an email with an alert that a consumer is interested in you and your services.

You will then login to OneFPA.org and click on the “My Leads” tab at the top of the page to view your leads and contact

them.

What are the specifications for my profile picture?

To ensure your profile picture looks as good as possible, please only use a photo that is in JPEG or PNG format and

approximately 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels. We recommend that the body and head is centered in the image and not cropped

too closely, with a comfortable amount of spacing around the edges.

What are the specifications for the images I want to associate with my brochures in the “Brochures” section?

Images can be in either JPEG or PNG format and should be 50 pixels by 50 pixels. If your image exceeds this, it will

automatically be scaled to fit.

What are the specifications for the images I want to associate with my links in the “My Links” section?

Images can be in either JPEG or PNG format and should be 60 pixels by 60 pixels. If your image exceeds this, it will

automatically be scaled to fit.
