Established in 1998, the Arizona Hall of Fame recognizes individu-als who have made a significant, positive contribution to the fire service and their community and which brings credit to the fire service.
Paul Adams presently serves as Fire Chief for the City of Avondale, Arizona, a position he has held
since November of 1996. His illustrious career began in his home state of Nebraska, as a fire volunteer in 1969. A career dedicated to service in the fire service eventually brought him to Arizona, when he was hired as Avondale Fire Chief.
6th Annual College and Career Fair at Agua Fria
High SchoolOver the past five years, Agua Fria High School and the Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce have partnered to host a College and Career Fair for the student body at Agua Fria High School. This year we are looking forward to our 6th annual event. We are hoping you will be interested in coming to the event and speaking with our students about college and career readiness.
The event will take place on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 from 8 am to 12 pm in the OK Fulton Gym at Agua Fria High School. All 1800 students at AFHS will attend the event. Different grades will come through at different times to browse and ask questions. Students are given questions to help them approach you and ask you about your business. We will provide you with a table and chairs plus access to electricity if needed. We encourage you to bring in artifacts, pictures, or any other type of visual aids to bring attention to your table. Students are also easily persuaded if there is candy or any “free” items like pencils, pens, magnets, etc. on the table
We hope that you are willing to take the time to participate in this great event. If you have any questions, please contact Amanda Nolasco at [email protected] or 623-932-7300 ext. 1036. To register to participate at this event, please visit http://goo.gl/xUUDOv.
Student Veteran Summit
The ten community colleges under Maricopa County Com-munity College District (MCCCD) make up the largest com-munity college system in the country. The student veteran population is estimated at 11,000, and will continue to grow. MCCCD and S.E.E.4Vets both desire to do all they can to lead the nation in student veteran retention and graduation.
To this end, S.E.E.4Vets is sponsoring a series of Student Veteran Summits. These summits bring together student veterans, college officials, chamber of commerce leadership and their associated businesses to facilitate productive inter-action for both the student veterans and the businesses in/around the sponsoring community college. These luncheon programs provide opportunities for student veterans to engage with local employers and for employers to develop a greater understanding of the veteran culture and their talents
On November 7, 2014, Estrella Mountain Community Col-lege will host a student veteran summit in Estrella Hall on campus. Mark your calendars now so you do not miss the chance to support and interact with these great young men and women who have served our nation admirably and are now transitioning to the civilian workforce.

Chamber Board Election Schedule
Nominations for the board of directors begin Monday December 1, 2014. Board members, who serve a fiscal three-year term, make decisions to benefit Members and future of the Chamber. Expect an official election notice in November.
The Intern's Perspective: Chamber Board Meeting
By Kayla PechacI recently had the pleasure of attending my first Chamber Board Meeting, and I must say, it was far more interesting than I thought it would be.
To be honest, I was afraid it’d be like those televised meet-ings where Congress gets together to throw big words at each other that go way over my head, but it wasn’t all. I will admit that my eyes glazed over a bit at the discussion of numbers, but I was genuinely intrigued the entire time. Getting to hear updates on the projects that the wonderful people of the chamber are working on was exciting, and I got some worthwhile insight on official Chamber things.
Even better than just seeing the inner workings of the board was that I finally got to meet them all. It wasn’t necessary, but they each took the time to individually introduce themselves to me at the beginning of the meeting and I appreciated that very much.
I’d like to give a special thank you to all the board mem-bers who were so kind and made me feel welcomed at the meeting.
October Bingo will be BOOtiful!
Win money, have fun, help create a fun event for the kids – October is “Southwest Valley Chamber Month” at Com-munity Bingo in Goodyear! Cut out the coupon below and, when you go play bingo, present it to the cashier. For every Chamber card received, Community Bingo will make a donation to the annual Halloween extravaganza, A Booti-ful Night at the Chamber. You’re not guaranteed to win a bingo pot (sorry), but it’s a lot of fun. You will definitely be a winner with the kids coming to trick-or-treat at the Chamber. Last year, around 250 parents and children came to the Halloween event and the Chamber Members who participated had a great time, too. But, you gotta play for everyone to win. Community Bingo is open Wednesday through Sunday with first call at 6:30pm and Fridays there’s an extra late night game that starts at 10:30pm. Community Bingo (3690 S. Estrella Pkwy, Goodyear) is operated by the Goodyear White Tanks and Buckeye Rotary Clubs.

Nonprofits Matter: Chamber Partners with Cardinals and Coyotes
The Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the Arizona Cardinals and Arizona Coyotes to promote the fund raising opportunities for local nonprofit groups. It was standing room only when Mr. Joe Furmanski of the Arizona Cardinals gave a great presentation on the Cardinals’ fundrais-ing and grant programs. While not available at this meeting, the Arizona Coyotes also shared information about their charity fundraising program. Nonprofit organizations provide important services for our com-munity. Want to help? Find more information on the Chamber’s website (southwestvalleychamber.org) and click the CHAMBER FOR GOOD image.
Crowds for Biz 2 Biz 2014Hundreds of people wandered through the tables at the Biz 2 Biz expo held at Wigwam Arizona. This an-nual event is produced by the West Valley Chamber Alliance. Businesses and organizations from the six West Valley chambers of commerce showed off their products and services, gave product demonstrations, said hello to old friends and made some new connec-tions. This year’s event had about 50% more partici-pants than last year, which everyone said was a great thing to happen. Chamber members who participated with a vendor table or simply walked through the event all had positive things to say. Thanks to all the Southwest Valley Chamber members who made up one-third of all the participants!

Report: Arizona Hispanic Chamber Annual Meeting
Past Chairman Ed Gerak and Chamber President John Safin represented the Southwest Valley Chamber at the annual “State of the Hispanic Market.” Nearly 1000 elected officials, community leaders, and other professionals attended the half day event, produced by the Arizona Hispanic Cham-ber of Commerce. We heard an update from AZ Hispanic Chamber President/CEO Gonzalo de la Melena Jr. and listened to featured speaker Chiqui Cartagena, author of Latino Boom II. This event was highlighted by the release of the 18th Annual DATOS Report. The study offers a detailed review and analysis of the latest research available on the economic trends shaping the Hispanic market in Arizona and nationally. Our thanks to the Arizona Hispanic Cham-ber of Commerce for their gracious invitation to the event.

A Better Way to Go SolarHome solar systems can not only offset our fossil-fuel-based energy consumption, but can also become a source of clean renewable energy, which can power homes and businesses long after the initial cost of the solar array has paid for itself. Home solar systems offer distinct advantages over other energy-related home improvement projects, and along with generating clean electricity, could also increase home and property values, while providing a dependable and affordable source of energy over the long term.
