FlairIn our inaugural issue, we wanted to pay homage to the region that sets our hearts-a-flutter and to the undeniable characteristics that weave their way into our Southern weddings. Ever-apparent traces of the historical South; breathtaking, scenic backdrops; the unrivaled charm of its locals...Its these characteristics that have made our coast the wedding destination of choice for couples from across the country, and its these details that we cant get enough of. So, with the help of some of our friends, and as an ode to the Lowcountry, weve created a list - a guide if you will - to embracing the coastal culture and incorporating that signature Lowcountry flair!

  • FALL 2013

CUISINE Throwing a wedding in a coastal town begs for an appropriate use of locally caught, and in-season seafood. Our first choice - oysters! We dig oyster roasts to kick-off the weekends festivities- whether its a laidback rehearsal dinner or welcome party- then we recommend stepping it up a notch with a raw bar and oyster shooters for the main event. While shrimp and grits might be a regular occurrence around these parts, a few of our friends from up North have never had the privilege of diving into this Lowcountry dish. Our suggestion - add it to the menu! Some might be hesitant to indulge in their first spoonful of grits, but we promise theyll rave about it for years to come! BEVERAGES As if we even had to tell you, sweet tea in some form is a must; we prefer ours in the form of Firefly Vodka with a splash of Lemonade, served in a mason jar. To round out the evening, send your guests off with a bag full of pralines or benne wafers - reminding them just how sweet the Lowcountry is!

    FA L L 2 0 1 3 3 1

Recommendations Depending on the size of your guest list,

consider booking 2-3 different properties in varying price ranges to accommodate everyones budget.

Look for hotels close to your reception site, tourist attractions or the beach so guests are able to experience the Lowcountry.

Most guests who see a coastal town on a wedding invitation immediately think Vacation! So, as a thoughtful Bride, ask if the group rates can be extended a few days before and after the wedding for those making a long weekend out of it.

To receive a discounted group rate, remember that most hotels require 10 rooms per night.

Our advice isthe sooner you get cracking, the better! So, the minute you nail down your wedding date, start researching hotels! Be prepared to hear higher rates during peak season or busy weekends like Bridge Run or the Heritage. Shoot to make your final decisions around nine months out.

  • Complimentary Room Policy how many paid room nights are required to receive a complimentary room?

Welcome Bags If you plan on gifting your guests with welcome bags (and we hope you do!) how will your hotel make sure theyre delivered? At check-in? In their room?

Cut-off date What will be the last day that your guests can receive the group discount? Usually, after this date, any rooms left in the block will be released back into the hotels inventory for re-sell. Guests will still be able to make reservations, but only at the hotels prevailing rate.

    FA L L 2 0 1 3 3 3

Questions to ask your Group Sales Coordinator

Oh, and lastly, when sending out your save-the-dates, be sure to include each propertys name, phone number, address and website. And, if you are getting hitched during the summer months, consider including the contact information for beach house rental properties in case your guests are planning to go all out!

Custom Webpage Can the hotel supply you with a custom wedding webpage that pre-populates the group rate and allows guests to book easily online?

Amenities What is included in the rate (breakfast, shuttle service, Wi-fi, etc.)?

Agreement/Contract Most hotels, if not all, will require you to sign a courtesy group agreement or contract to confirm the group block. This can be as minimal as a courtesy group agreement that does not require you to pay for any unused rooms, or a contract with an attrition clause that will hold you financially responsible if all the rooms are not reserved. Under these circumstances, you will be required to provide a credit card to guarantee the block.

  • Try not to worry about what other people will think. Think about what you want, what you love, your love for your fianc, and take help from whoever offers! Most importantly, soak up every moment of your wedding day. After months of planning, it goes by way too fast. I remember being on the dance floor and the wedding planner tapped me on the shoulder saying it was time to prepare for our farewell. I started crying because I wasnt ready for the party to be over!

Just be in the moment and enjoy it. It took me months to come down from my cloud of bliss and in truth Im still on it. It was magical.

  • CHARITABLE DonationsIts easy to get a little overwhelmed and lose sight of whats truly important while navigating through the world of wedding planning. We all know how it goes, you get hung up on which shade of pink dress your bridesmaids will wear, or whether youll serve Shrimp & Grits or Mac and Cheese during your reception (Answer...serve both!), which is why we love the idea of foregoing the traditional wedding favors in place of a donation in your guests honor to your favorite local charity.

Weve rounded up a few of our favorite regional organizations that work hard every day to make a difference in the Lowcountry!

    CHARLESTON ANIMAL SOCIETY

The mission of the Charleston Animal Society has been the same for 139 years preventing cruelty to animals. Through a large-scale spay/neuter program, a free roaming cat initiative, educational outreach programs that teach our children to be humanitarians and a food bank for pets that helped 900 families last year, the Charleston Animal Society strives to protect, care and love for our animals.

    MUSC CHILDRENS HOSPITAL

An integral part of the Medical University of South Carolina, the MUSC Childrens Hospital is dedicated to enhancing the health of children throughout the state of South Carolina by allowing kids to be kids without a care in the world, and to providing an environment that supports excellence in pediatric patient care, teaching and research.

    HEALING FARMS MINISTRIES

Located in Mount Pleasant, Healing Farms strives to provide sustainable community-based support that promotes inter-dependence and empowers adults with developmental disabilities, their families and communities.

    FIELDS TO FAMILIES

Fields to Families empowers the Lowcountrys hungry by providing nutritional education and fresh produce from local farms and gardens.

    CHARLESTON WATERKEEPER

Charleston Waterkeeper focuses on water quality issues in the Charleston Harbor, the Ashley, Cooper, Wando, and Stono Rivers, and coastal areas by patrolling and monitoring Charlestons waterways to protect our right to enjoy life on the coast.

This athletic duo first met when their running club met up behind a pizza parlor. Fast forward to a Costa Rican engagement, and before you knew it this Washington D.C. couple was in the midst of planning a Lowcountry blowout! Ashley and Brian tied the knot on a lovely Spring day in early April at the Creek Club at IOn. The combination of a nautical color palette of emerald and navy mixed with floral arrangements drenched in color, flawlessly

captured the crisp beginnings of the season. The couple said they wanted their reception to be a big, fun party, and thats exactly what they delivered! The ceremony was followed by a lively reception filled with thoughtful details. An evening on the dance floor, including an encore from The Boomers, was capped-off with the newlyweds boarding a getaway boat and cruising off into the moonlight!

  • Leigh Anne + DouglasPawleys Island, South Carolina

Unlike those of us who grow up daydreaming about our wedding day, the bug never quite bit Bride Leigh Anne; that is, until she visited the magical Litchfield Plantation. After a few minutes of reveling in the beauty, she quickly turned to her father and said, Daddy, I want to get married in the Spanish moss. And were so thankful she did, because this Southern, plantation-style home in Pawleys Island has a knack for

sweeping brides-to-be off their feet. On the day of their wedding, rain threatened to put a damper on their outdoor festivities, but as luck would have it, the clouds opened up just in time for Leigh Anne + Douglas to say I do under the oak trees. Afterward, they joined their guests for a Lowcountry evening complete with swanky chandeliers, mason jars and rustic lanterns.

MAIDS We adore these sassy, one- shoulder, floor length chiffon gowns. But our favorite detail - the lanterns! In place of traditional bouquets, the lanterns (tied with a bow!) added a rustic touch to their stroll down the aisle.

  • Amanda + DerekAwendaw, South Carolina

Since Amanda wasnt having much luck in the love department, her friends decided the time had come for Amanda to test out the world of internet dating. So one night, they popped a bottle of wine (maybe more, who knows!) and created Amandas online profile. They must have nailed it, because it caught the eye of Derek, an Alabama transplant and Southern gentleman. It started with emailing and texting, and before they knew it, their relationship had blossomed into a beautiful engagement and some serious long-distance wedding planning.

With Amandas family hailing from California and Dereks crew in Alabama, they came to the conclusion that a destination wedding was inevitable, which cleared the path for A Lowcountry Wedding! Planning a wedding is never easy, especially when youre 3,000 miles away, but Amanda + Derek went with their instincts when selecting the beautiful Pepper Plantation. After finding out there was only one March date left, they took the plunge and booked it from afar!

Amanda said, They met with us before the wed-ding a couple times, spent quality time with us, laughed with us...I mean, really got to know us. Sean knew Derek was a big hunter and brought this really cool antique gun for us to pose with. They brought fun props for us to play around with. In February of 2010, Becca started training at a new gym in the heart of Uptown Charlotte. Shortly after, she struck up a conversation (and a friendship!) with the Gyms owner, Jay, and before she knew it things had blossomed into a loving relationship. After a surprise in-home proposal in 2012, the day before a big trip to Mexico, the couple began planning their intimate, beachy affair in Charleston.

Becca + Jay were on the hunt for a beach house that allowed for an Oceanside ceremony, with a reception just steps away. Thats just what they found the moment they walked inside The Pink Flamingo on Folly Beach. The house offered an open floor plan with scenic views of the Atlantic, and a rooftop, cabana-style deck (perfect for their first look!) that was everything they hoped for!

Tamika + Juan began their love story after meeting unexpectedly on the steps of a nightclub in Washington, D.C. Though the duo took a brief hiatus, they eventually reunited and began planning the rest of their lives together. Tamika always knew she wanted to get married in her home state of South Carolina, and after a surprise in-home proposal, the couple began planning their dreamy Lowcountry wedding under the oaks!

Having grown up just a short distance away, Tamika and her family had spent a lot of time at Charles Towne Landing, and after touring The Legare Waring House, Tamika was certain that this was the perfect spot for them. The fairytale-esque oak trees, dressed in Spanish moss and surrounded by crystal lagoons, set the beautiful scene that Tamika had dreamt of. Chloe + Kyle were so excited to get married and couldnt wait to dive right into the wedding planning process. In fact, they got started even before Chloe had a ring on her finger. Two days before Kyle proposed, the couple had already decided on their fairytale wedding venue, and a few hours before their March 9th engagement, Chloe even spotted the gown of her dreams. Their jumpstart enabled the duo to finish planning their intimate Downtown affair in just 2 short months. The location was an easy choice for Chloe, who fell in love with Charleston as a child and

knew the citys charm was exactly how she wanted to introduce Kyles family to her Southern roots. It didnt take Kyle long to come to the same decision; immediately after seeing The Cabell House and Battery Park, Kyle was all the way on the Charleston-bandwagon! From that point on, everything came together seamlessly, all surrounding the common theme of a family affair that embodied a relaxed, yet traditional Southern elegance. There arent too many opportunities to use the word serendipitous, and after hearing about Katie + Franks chance encounter on a flight from Dublin, I knew I wasnt going to pass up the chance. Katie decided to spend a few extra days traveling around Europe after a work trip to Edinburgh, and ended up missing a flightwhen she made it onto another plane, Katie found herself seated next to Frank for the long trip back to the States. By the time flight attendants began serving dinner to passengers, Frank found Katie fast asleep. Not wanting to wake her, and definitely not wanting her to go

without dinner, Frank went out on a limb and ordered her the chicken. When Katie awoke, the kind stranger next to her asked, I hope the chicken is OK. Apparently it was, because the two quickly became inseparable. That, my friends, was the beginning of a beautiful (and serendipitous!) intercontinental love story. With Katie remaining in the States, and Frank back in Ireland, the couple made it a priority to see each other as much as possible. And wouldnt you know it, their first holiday together was spent in Charleston! While visiting, they walked past the William Aiken House and Katie had inkling theyd get married there someday!

  • Jennifer + CarlMyrtle Beach, South Carolina

Michigan-native Jennifer had been making the trek to Myrtle Beach with her family for over 15 years. Over time, her family fell in love with the laidback lifestyle that the Lowcountry had to offer; so much so that her parents purchased a winter home along the Grand Strand, and her brother moved in permanently. So, when Jennifer + Carl got engaged in November of 2011, the couples first decision came easily- Myrtle Beach was going to be the backdrop for their I dos.

As members of the Grande Dunes Ocean Club, the soon-to-be married couple knew this elegant atmosphere would be the perfect setting for their nuptials. The ceremony took place outdoors on the terrace, and immediately following, the group moved into the Main Dining Room for the reception. With a guest list of 35 of their closest family and friends, the couple opted for an intimate cocktail reception to keep people mixing and mingling throughout the evening.

  • Weve all heard the day-of horror stories where things just dont go as planned. Once it arrives, all we can really do is cross our fingers and say a little prayer that everything goes smoothly. Well, Jennifer wasnt so lucky...but were glad shes able to laugh about it now! The salon she had booked to do her hair and makeup (months in advance, mind you!) somehow managed to lose the appointment. Nightmare, right? Luckily, seeing the pinch they were in, another salon was able to accommodate Jennifer and her maids last-minute. Despite the situation, Jennifer was able to stay calm and keep a smile by reminding herself that the highlight of the day, her marriage to Carl, was still very much intact and no vendor malfunction could keep them from their nuptials!

  • Kristen + JakeMount pleasant, South Carolina

These two Charleston transplants, Kristen + Jake, crossed paths while working at a car rental agency, but it wasnt until one fateful night at a friends birthday party that they really hit it off. After staying up all night chatting and getting to know each other, Jake took a chance and asked Kristen (and her pup, Zoe) to join him at the Pitt Street Bridge. The trio enjoyed the afternoon in each others company, amid the sunshine and the pluff mud, and have been inseparable ever since.

When Jake began plotting for a surprise engagement, he knew immediately that the site of their first date would be the perfect location. But he just had to figure out how to get her there! Since that first date, the couple had relocated to Savannah, so attempting to pull off a surprise proposal without being too obvious was going to be tough. But, with the help of a few friends, and a fake surprise birthday party, Jake was able to make Kristens 29th birthday celebration a weekend shell never forget!

  • Kristin + BrendenCharleston, South Carolina

Despite the fact that they both attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington, had many mutual friends, and were often at the same place at the same time, it wasnt until the Summer of 2010 that Kristin + Brenden finally met and quickly fell for one another. After an intimate at-home proposal, the couple began to plan the ultimate Lowcountry affair in the heart of the Holy City. For Kristin, Charleston has always been a second home. Her parents met and were married in Charleston, so the family frequented the

Lowcountry throughout her childhood. Shortly before Kristin and Brenden began dating, her parents returned to Charleston for good, which made it the perfect spot for weekend getaways. Kristin and Brenden fell in love with the history and romance of Downtown Charleston. They knew their wedding would be a large one, with guests traveling from all over the country, so they wanted a location that had a lot to offer as a destination, which made the Holy City an obvious choice!

The menu included Fried Oysters, Shrimp and Grits, Fried Green Tomatoes, a Biscuit Bar and our favorite - a Popcorn Bar to pay homage to the grooms past in the film industry. • Erin + Stevejohns island, South Carolina

There are two things every Southern girl dreams of- a magical wedding, and of course, a one-of-a-kind engagement story to get the party started. Bride Erin got both! In August of 2011, the couple had planned for a weeklong vacation with Steves parents in New Hampshire. What Erin didnt know, was that Steve had other, more romantic plans. The evening before their scheduled departure, Steve handed Erin her first surprise...the itinerary for a trip to

Madrid, the city where they first met! Steve had meticulously planned every detail he even did Erins laundry so she would have plenty of clothes for the trip! After hopping around Madrid for a while, even making a pit stop at the site of their first kiss, Steve got on one knee in the middle of Retiro Park and asked for Erins hand in marriage. Adorable, right? Well, thats not all. To top things off, he surprised Erin (again!) with a romantic engagement-moon in the Basque Country!

  • TABLES Instead of using table numbers, this traveling twosome named each table after places they had visited together. Guests enjoyed spending their evening at Reykjavik, Iceland or Zanzibar, Tanzania! DETAILS The mother-of-the-bride was responsible for some of our favorite additions - homemade peach bourbon jam favors, travel-themed place cards, and homemade pralines and benne wafers for the welcome bags. VENUE The proximity to the water, the wide-open outdoor space, and the simple beauty of it all made The Island House an obvious choice for this San Francisco-based couple.

  • BROOCH The brooch pinned on Erins bouquet was particularly meaningful. The set was designed by Tiffanys in the 1800s as a replica of the jewelry designed by Abraham Lincoln for Mary Todd to wear on her wedding day. She was the 5th generation in her family to don the sentimental piece on her wedding day FAVORITE MOMENT Right after the ceremony, we were so excited to be married - I even forgot my bouquet as we walked back down the aisle. But that moment when we were by ourselves and realized that we were husband and wife, I could barely catch my breath and definitely started crying.

  • SPECIALTY DRINKS With IceBox manning the bar, the couple designed specialty drinks to give a nod to their relationship. Holiday in Spain (a tribute to their engagement and where they met) was a Jalapeno and Cilantro Margarita with macerated Red Peppers, and the Johns Island Cider was a mix of Rum, Spiced Apple Cider, Mint, and Ginger Beer WHATS FOR DINNER Cru Catering whipped up a Tomato and Muskmelon Salad with Candied Pecans, and gave guest a choice of Ginger-Seared Wreck Fish or Pomegranate-Glazed Cornish Hen. Erin said, Objectively (or maybe not), this was one of the best meals of my life.

  • SWEETS Instead of a traditional wedding cake, the couple enlisted WildFlour Pastry to wow their guests with a pie bar! Guests were blown away with bourbon pecan, key lime with gingersnap crust, walnut derby , triple berry with oat streusel, and a banoffee (banana-toffee) pie! It was so delightful that one guest who will remain nameless hit the pie bar a record 5 times!

  • DANCINGFools!

Lets get real here...I love Lowcountry weddings. Everything about them. From the engagements and gorgeous gowns to the mouthwatering cuisine and amazing florals. I love it. All of it. But when it boils down to it, the best part, without a doubt, is always

the reception. Once the drinks start flowing, the band starts playing and guests start kicking off their shoes...thats when the pictures get good.

Real good. So, to round out our premier issue, everyone raise your glasses to those dancing fools who star in our favorite pictures! Cheers!
