FALL 2009 PARTNER: RAM KRISHNAN SCHOONER BAY PROFESSOR CASUSCELLI

Located in Schooner Bay, Bahamas, the program called for a multi-use building consisting of ballroom space and commercial retail. The project embraced the beauty of the tropical weather in the Bahamas and created an open-air ballroom setting. The building is constructed of local materials: coral rock and wood. The lookout tower provides additional views to the bay. (Hand drafted on Mylar)

RE-LIGARE INSTITUTE AISC STEEL COMPETITION

In the AISC Steel Competition in 2010, the competition guidelines asked for a wellness center designed with the intention of themes portraying social, body, mind, and nature. Our site was located in downtown Miami, adjacent to the old courthouse building. Our project’s structure is com-posed of a giant steel space frame, emphasizing the steel to the downtown city life. The floor plans incorporate open-aired walk ways and series of gardens.

PIAZZA SAN SILVESTRO, ROMA, ITALIA

As an urban space in Rome, Piaza San Silvestro lacked elements that prevented it from being successful. Bordered only on three sides of the plaza, we cre-ated a fourth surrounding element ot make the space feel more enclosed. We changed the plaza dynamic with a super wall structure. Small shops line the bottom of the structure, activating the wall to the street. Columns were also added to establish the grand entrance into the plaza while also framing the church of San

Silvestro. A modern sculpture was also designed for the project, illustrating the great history of the saint that the plaza was named after. The other side of the wall provides steps for sitting and a platform that can act as a stage for events. Each element designed relates to the history and the architectural culture of Rome, while respecting its surrounding context.

FERRY TERMINAL, RIO DE JANEIRO

In the historic district of Rio, the project of a new ferry terminal was proposed adjacent to the old ferry terminal. The design also focused on the master planning and urbanization of the city, affecting the future design of the new terminal. My partner and I proposed a series of parks, taking in inspiration from the famous Burlemarx, and also highlighted many of Rio’s hidden jewels. For the site, our intervention cuts in the land, bringing tbe waterfront closer to the palace.

FALL 2012 PARTNER: MONICA SOCORRO BRAZIL PROFESSOR JOSE GELABERT-NAVIA

Our building is comprised of three elements: the ferry terminal, a bridge connecting the old terminal to the new, and a tower for commercial and office space. Each space took advantage of its own views to the city, to the nearby park spaces, and the water. Our building pushed for sustainability, implementing a roof gar-den, brise-soleils and adjustable louvers to provide breezes and shade for natural ventilation.

CROWNE HALL, IIT, MIES VAN DER ROHE PARTNER: MONICA SOCORRO

The model was built as a structral analytique on steel. The precedent was the Crowne Hall located in the Illinois Institute of Technology by Mies Van der Rohe. The bass wood model focused on analyzing the steel girder system, allowing an open floor plan. Mies also turned the steel I-beam into an aesthetic rhythm on the exterior while also being structurally sound.

PARMELEE HOUSE, CORAL GABLES, DEAN PARMELEE PARTNER: ISABEL SARMIENTO

Part of a tropical house elective, the bass wood model documents a historic house in Coral Gables made by architect Dean Parmelee. The most famous feature of the house was the outdoor living room, located in the center of the project with mosquito netting for the roof. The model walls were scored to reflect the texture of the coral rock used to build the house.
