Visits St. Barnabas.
St. Barnabas begins 2019….
The Annual Parish Meeting is a time to give thanks for the blessings of the prior year and
reflect on the opportunities we had as a community to serve others in the image of Jesus.
On January 13, 2019, we recognized the service of three faithful Vestry members who
completed their terms in December. Julie Alvarez, Frances Money and John Sumners
provided amazing, forward thinking leadership during the past three years. We are grateful
for their devotion to St. Barnabas. Thank you for your guidance and launching us into the
future.
The next order of business was to elect four Vestry members whose terms will be 2019-2021.
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Alison Acton, Brandon Dickerson, Clayton Drescher
and Ginny Thomason as our newest Vestry class. These faithful parishioners will be invaluable
additions to our group. Although you have already been serving St. Barnabas, thank you for
generously agreeing to serve St. Barnabas in this capacity.
At the time I was writing this article, our parish was being well represented at the 115th
Diocesan Council of West Texas in McAllen, TX. The theme for the 2019 Council is “Walk in
Love” from Ephesians 5:2. Father Jeff, Father Bur, Carol Schreider, Debbie and Johnny Gordon
and Beth and Jimmy Davis attended this year’s Council. We will get a report on the journey of
this brilliant delegation in the near future. My appreciation to each of you for participating in
this leadership role.
The beginning of the Vestry’s work together as a body will begin with the Annual Vestry Retreat
on March 2, 2019. This will give us a great opportunity to look at how the vestry can function
effectively and to nurture growth. To this end, Pam and Jim Spruiell will present to and lead us
in a program that will assist us to listen to understand before trying to be understood when
communicating around difficult issues or in the shaping of policies.
Walk in Love and may Peace be with you wherever you are.

Guardian Angels Needed
For this Lent, we are beginning a new St Barnabas tradition. Guardian
Angels (adult volunteers) will be matched with our young people. Throughout
Lent, the Guardian Angels will pray daily for their matched child, all in secret!
At the end of Lent, a dinner will be held to introduce the children to their
Guardian Angels. If you would like to be a Guardian Angel during Lent,
please contact Karen Young ([email protected] or 830-285-1012) or call the church
(830-997-5762).
FIELD THISTLE
Cirsium discolor (Muhl. ex Willd.) Spreng.
Plant Symbol = CIDI
Uses
Wildlife: The large flowers and abundant nectar are very attractive to many species of
butterflies, hummingbirds, bees and moths. Many other species will also use other plant
parts for food, including the leaves, stems, roots, flower heads and seeds. Seeds are
attractive to seed eating birds such as such as the American goldfinch.
Ethnobotanical: Field thistle, like other Cirsium species, has edible roots, inner stems,
young leaves, young inner parts of flower buds and seeds. Native Americans used a paste of
the roots for treating wounds, boils, and piles, and also used an infusion of the root for
treating stomach ache. Native Americans also used the thistle down (or pappus) from the
seeds to fletch (provide an arrow with feathers for flight) the tail end of blow darts.

Thistles have inspired the ministry of the Rev. Becca Stevens that is
transforming the lives of women and men throughout the world.
During Lent we will discuss the different ways that a Thistle has
inspired the outward and visible sign of God’s Healing Love.
Becca founded Magdalene, a two-year residential program for former
prostitutes overcoming addiction(s) and wanting to restart their lives.
She also founded Thistle Farms which is a nonprofit social enterprise,
based in Nashville, TN, dedicated to helping women survivors recover
and heal from prostitution, trafficking, and addiction.
Becca reflected on the use of Thistles in her ministry when she said
“Thistles have a whole history of survival by brutality. They push up
though concrete, they survive droughts, they thrive in floods but they
also have a soft beautifully purple center. When we would start going
down some of the roads where the women were walking and sleeping,
the Thistle was the only “flower” that was still growing. She started
researching what a thistle really was … the extracts from thistles have
been used for about 1000 years to restore and detoxify the liver.
Because many of the women being served had issues with alcohol and hepitatis, their livers were in
need of healing. Kind of by chance, we named a company thistles and started harvesting thistles.
We picked thistles with our hands and dipped our hand in water cleaning the thistles after
harvesting. We picked the one flower or weed that the women who were coming off the streets
absolutely need for
healing. It’s perfect.
According to Becca,
there are over 100
women on Magdalene’s
waiting list. We have
women from every
state that want to be a part of this community and want to
join in this powerful witness for how love heals for women who
have histories of trafficking, addiction, and prostitution. We
have about 40 sister communities now around the country
that have adopted this model.
The way women get there starts in childhood trauma. On average the women that we serve are first
raped between the ages of 7 and 11 and they hit the streets on average between the ages of 14 and 16
years old. They have experienced the inside of prison walls. They have endured the underside of
bridges. They have survived the backside of anger. All of it. When they come to us, most of the
women don’t really have hardly anything but some hope.
Becca will be with us March 27th and 28th to discuss her ministries — Magdalene and Thistle
Farms.
The roots of prostitution and
trafficking are often found in severe
childhood abuse, loss and/or neglect.
It is these traumatic childhood
experiences that pushed the women
towards homelessness, addiction,
prostitution, trafficking, and
incarceration. They are survivors, and
we offer unconditional love and
support without judgment.
“
This is the place where we get second — and third
and fourth—chances. It’s where we can show our
families and our kids that it is possible to regain
our lives. I think I’m living proof that it happens.”
Chelle, 2005 graduate, Account Manager
Lent 2019
Lent extends from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday (a period of 40 days excluding
Sundays). All Christians are invited to the observance of a holy Lent, by self examination and
repentance: by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy
Word.
ANNUAL SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER
March 5th – 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm in the Parish Hall
The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is known as “Shrove Tuesday” or “Fat Tuesday”. Because of
the Lenten Fast, Shrove Tuesday was a day of celebration and indulgence before the discipline of
Lent. There is no program. This is a time for fellowship and fun – you can come and go whenever
you please. We will begin serving pancakes at 5:00 pm and conclude at 7:00 pm.
ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE
