PLYMOUTH TODAY

Plymouth is a developing city with a great Maritime History. However to the rest of Britain and within the sailing world it struggles to deliver a coherent message about its assets and viability as a centre of maritime excellence. Sam Goodchild Racing has offered the services of its management team to head up a Plymouth Consortium to put Plymouth back on the map of International Maritime Excellence. This will run alongside their own Vendee Globe 2016 Campaign.

There is a wealth of experience and talent that has never had one place to discuss, develop and expand their respective interests, innovations and skills to allow the true potential of Plymouth to shine in a competitive world.

In the ROOM tonight

GOOD PLANThe plan is to build a consortium with FIVE KEY

elements

Page 8: A future in Sailing: A consortium lead initative in Plymouth

If this was going to be easy then we would not be here tonight. We have a saying in Formula 1 . “ If you have to think about it, it’s too late”. The other major sailing host cities are not going to take our efforts lying down. So resilience by all is an important ingredient.

Be Resilient

Page 9: A future in Sailing: A consortium lead initative in Plymouth

Endurance sports thrives on the word CAN’T. There will be many doubters but few achievers so determination will sort out the people with passion about the Future of Sailing in Plymouth and the people who just can’t stay the distance.

Be Determined

Each Key partner will select two representatives.

With KNOWLEDGE and OPERATIONAL skills

They will then represent the partners with the clear intention of developing a long term

strategy and delivery of a master plan for A Future in Sailing

Selection of Consortium members

Sam’s role in the project is simple. Maintain the momentum to achieve his

goal of entering the 2016 Vendee Globe. Inspire young people to want to sail and

engage with their water environment. Be a good role model and increase Plymouth’s

synergy with Single – handed racing worldwide.

To work with the council to develop host city sailing events that are on message , appropriate, on budget, professionally run and strategically placed within the International race calendar. Resource from the consortium the skills that are needed to achieve this vision and allocate relevant skills and budget to negotiate long term assets and sponsorship acquisition for the city. Look after the brand and what it stands for on the global stage.

Destination Plymouth

The University is the hub of innovation, education and the capacity to link business, technology and the Future of Sailing into major National and International centres. It will bring rationale and alignment to an existing fragmented message coming out of the city about its sailing , innovation and capacity to deliver at the sharp end.

Every project needs a physical home and a natural choice for this is where the history and rule making of single handed sailing is situated. We have an opportunity to define the Wimbledon of sailing here in Plymouth. All sport has a home or headquarters. This does not banish other centres of sailing but it does give the outside world a marker in the sand to understand the message coming out of Plymouth. Also it is an asset that no other British port has. USE IT

Horizon Sailing Charity gives us a “reality check “ and feet on the ground perspective to the whole project. When the consortium loses its way in conversations of commercial greatness and taking on the world of sailing. Horizon’s will always define the roots of Plymouth and its history. Social Responsibility is not an add-on . It is a necessity to the principles of good practice.

History comes in different forms and has an impact on people’s lives in many ways. Whether you served under Blondie Hasler, were a seven year boy on Plymouth Hoe when Chichester arrived in Plymouth or sailing to school with Sam Goodchild in Grenada on a hot sunny morning. It is the Future that counts and it in our hands
