To celebrate 'World Book Day', Brixham Heritage Museum, Torre Abbey Museum and Torquay Musem will be hosIng a weekend of events, tours, talks and presentaIons with the theme of 'Sharing Stories’ Hear & Now is bringing people together over the next two years across Torbay to find and celebrate local stories in and about Torbay. All stories will be recorded, shared online, broadcast on radio staIons and housed in listening pods in the main libraries in Torbay. This project is funded by Heritage LoSery Fund and Ageing Well Torbay. On Thursday 1st March 12pm to 4pm ‘Hear & Now’ will be collec=ng
stories at Brixham Museum from local storytellers. Patricia will talk about her experiences of running a poetry magazine from its formaIon through to the ediIng process. Wri3ng and Publishing in the West Country A talk by local historian John Risdon
John’s involvement in publishing over the past 35 years has been within the factual word, very much associated with his beloved West Country. StarIng with small descripIve publicaIons on Dartmoor’s environment and history, he moved on to a more thorough work specifically on the Dart estuary. In addiIon, with his involvement in West Country publishing and distribuIon, he was lucky enough to rub shoulders with many other local authors. His talk will be both an account of his experiences in wriIng and publishing but also a chance for informal discussion on the highs and lows of the reference book world. Working with ‘The Archers’ -‐ An insight into the world of producing the everyday story of Borsetshire folk.
A Talk by John Scotney. John Scotney: John worked for BBC Radio for over twenty years including a couple of sInts of a few months each as an AcIng Chief Producer and Editor (in charge of) Britain’s favourite daily programme ‘The Archers’. Altogether he produced about 300 programmes of various kinds and scripted about 100 plays, classic serials dramaIzaIons, dramaIzed features and actuality features. He has wriSen 10 publicaIons including a recent short history of Brixham. Come along and listen to his fascinaIng insight into the world of producing the everyday story of Borsetshire folk. Research and Wri3ng Local History Panel Discussion Join celebrated local historians and published authors, Samantha LiSle, Fiona Freer, Rolf Söderlind, Mike Holgate and Chairman of Brixham Heritage Museum, John Scotney as they discuss their creaIve thoughts and processes in researching and wriIng about local stories. Fiona Freer: As Assistant Headteacher at Abbey School in St. Marychurch, Fiona started to research the history of this fine, Georgian mansion. The story she discovered over five years was so compelling that she wrote a novel enItled "A Long Time Dying -‐ the story of the Tayleurs of Torquay.” Fiona has also published "A Yorkshire Memsahib", using her mother's diaries and leSers from her Ime in India in 1945 and 1946.She is now researching the history of her home in rural BriSany, which was built in 1690.
RESEARCH AND WRITING Local History Panel Discussion BRIXHAM HERITAGE MUSEUM Friday 2 March: 1pm to 3pm … con&nued/2 Rolf Söderlind: Rolf reported world news from 20 countries mainly for Reuters before reIring to become an author. His latest book, An Unsound Mind, is loosely based on a tragedy that took place in 1933 in the house in Torquay where he now lives. It is available on Amazon online and in Waterstones in Torquay. Mike Holgate: Mike is the author of twenty history books including oneat accounts of famous figures Agatha ChrisIe, Napoleon Bonaparte, John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee and Jack the Ripper. For several years he was a feature writer for Devon Life and his research has been used in programmes produced by BBC Radio Devon and Granada Television. Samantha Ligle: Samantha is Writer in Residence at Brixham Heritage Museum. She has wriSen five local history books based on material held in the Museum. A member of the Society of Authors, she has provided research for BBC programmes commemoraIng the Great War, and contributed to Farming, Fishing and Food Supply in the First World War (an Exeter University publicaIon), The Devon Historian and the Torbay Local History Series. She is a patron of the arts in healthcare charity Poems in the WaiIng Room and contributes book reviews to Signposts for Carers, a local NHS magazine. Her new book will be published next month.
John Tucker: Although his reputaIon is more as a historian of heavy rock music, with six books and countless reviews to his name, John is the Head of Local Studies for Torbay Libraries. The department responds to approximately twenty enquiries a month from all over the world and John and his team’s work has been used in numerous books and TV programmes, the latest being Julie Walter’s ‘Coastal Railways’. In John’s view, it doesn’t maSer what the topic is, the most important thing is to research everything with great care and aSenIon: once it’s in the public domain it’s there for good, so get it right first Ime. Mic B is a raggedy rhymer, storyteller and purveyor of super natural verse. His poetry performances are wildly entertaining and fun for children and adults. (Suitable for 4yrs and above).

Meet Author Karl Gale who reIred to Brixham in 1997. The view from
his home, overlooking Torbay and the busy harbour of Brixham developed his interest in fishing boats. The adventures of the LiSle
Fishing Boats of Brixham began to form in his mind! A storytelling event with a nauIcal theme,
suitable for children aged 3 to 10yrs.

He has published seven novels and two collecIons of short stories. Richard will be reading a short excerpt from his book ‘Andorra PeS and the Oort Cloud Café’ and talking about his new publicaIon ‘Andorra PeS on Mars’, due out in April 2018. Come along and meet the author, and take part in a quesIon and answer session for budding writers and fans.
