A bulldog is the common name for a breed ofdogalsoreferred to as the English bulldog or British Bulldog.Other bulldog breeds include theAmerican bulldogandtheFrench bulldog. The bulldog is a muscular heavy dogwith a wrinkled face and a distinctive pushed-in nose.TheAmerican Kennel Club(AKC),The Kennel Club(UK) and theUnited Kennel Club(UKC) overseebreeding standards.

    Appearance

The bulldog is a breed with characteristically wideshoulders and a matching head. There are generally thickfolds of skin on a bulldog's brow, followed by round, black, wide-set eyes, a short muzzle with characteristicfolds called "rope" above the nose, with hanging skinunder the neck, drooping lips, and pointed teeth. Thecoat is short, flat and sleek, with colors of red, fawn, white, brindle (mixed colors, often in waves or irregularstripes), andpiebald.

In the US, the size of a typical mature male is about 45pounds and that for mature females is about 45 poundsfor a Standard English Bulldog. In theUnited Kingdom, the breed standard is 55 pounds for a male and 50 poundsfor a female.

While some canine breeds have their tails cut ordockedsoon after birth, bulldogs are one of very few breedswhose tail is naturally short and curled.

    [edit] Temperament

Despite their famous "sourpuss" expression, bulldogs aregenerally docile and easy to please. They can movequickly over short distances. Bulldogs do not need a lotof physical exercise, so they are well-suited for living inapartments and other urban environments. They arefriendly and gregarious but occasionally willful. Thephrase "stubborn as a bulldog" is loosely rooted in fact.

They rank 78th out of 80 inStanley Coren'sTheIntelligence of Dogs, being of lowest degreeworking/obedience intelligence.

Breeders have worked to breed aggression out of the

breed, and as such, the dog is known to be of generallygood temperament. Due to their friendly, patient nature, bulldogs are known for getting along well with children, other dogs, and pets. Bulldogs can be so attached tohome and family that they will not venture out of theyard without a human companion.

    [edit] Health

    Adult female bulldog with under-bite

Bulldog breed clubs put the average life span of thebreed at 812 years,[2][3]although a UK survey puts it at6.5 years. The leading cause of death of Bulldogs in thesurvey was cardiac related (20%), cancer (18%) and oldage (9%). Those that died of old age had an average lifespan of 10 to 11 years.[4]

Statistics from theOrthopedic Foundation for Animalsindicate that of the 467 Bulldogs tested between 1979

and 2009 (36 years), 73.9% were affected byhipdysplasia, the highest amongst all breeds.[5]Similarly,the breed has the worst score in the British VeterinaryAssociation/Kennel Club Hip Dysplasia scoring scheme, althoughonly 22 Bulldogswere tested in the Scheme.[6]Patellar luxationis another condition which affects 6.2%of Bulldogs.[7]

Some individuals of this breed are prone to interdigitalcysts, which are cysts that form between the toes. Thesecause the dog some discomfort, but are treatable either

by vet or an experienced owner. They may also sufferfrom respiratory problems.

Other problems can includecherry eye, a protrusion ofthe inner eyelid (which can be corrected by aveterinarian), certainallergies, andhipissues in olderbulldogs. Puppies are frequently delivered byCesareansectionbecause their characteristically large heads can

become lodged in the mother's birth canal during naturalbirth. However, it is not entirely uncommon for a bulldogto whelp naturally and successfully. Over 80% ofBulldog litters are delivered by Caesarean section.[8]Thefolds or "rope" on a Bulldogs face should be cleaned

daily to avoid unwanted infections caused by moistureaccumulation. Also, some bulldogs' naturally curlingtails can be so tight to the body as to require regularcleaning and a bit of ointment.

Like all dogs, bulldogs require dailyexercise. If notproperly exercised it is possible for a bulldog to becomeoverweight, which could lead to heart and lungproblems, as well as joint issues.

Bulldogs are very sensitive to heat. Extra caution should

be practiced in warmer climates and during summermonths. Bulldogs must be given plenty of shade andwater, and must be kept out of standing heat. Airconditioning and good ventilation is required to keepthem healthy and safe. Bulldogs actually do most of theirsweating through the pads on their feet. You will noticebulldogs really enjoy cool floors such as tile or cement. This helps keep them cool. Due to the airway obstructionproblem bulldogs may have, like all "short-faced" breedsthey can easily get overheated and even die fromhyperthermia. They can be big snorters and heavybreathers due to this obstruction, and by and large theytend to be loud snorers. These are all issues that are easyto keep under control as long as you stay aware andprotect your bulldog from these unsafe conditions.

In January 2009, after the BBC documentaryPedigreeDogs Exposed,The Kennel Clubintroduced revisedbreed standards for the British Bulldog, along with 209other breeds, to address health concerns. Opposed by theBritish Bulldog Breed Council, it was speculated by thepress that the changes would lead to a smaller head, lessskin folds, a longer muzzle, and a taller thinner posture,in order to combat perceived problems with respirationand with breeding due to head size and width ofshoulders.[9]

The term "bulldog" was first mentioned in literaturearound 1500, the oldest spelling of the word beingBondogge and Bolddogge. The first reference to theword with the modern spelling is dated 1631 or 1632 in a

letter by a man named Preswick Eaton where he writes:"procuer mee two good Bulldogs, and let them be sent byye first shipp".[10]The name "bull" was applied becauseof the dog's use in the sport of bull baiting. The originalBulldog had to be very ferocious and so savage andcourageous as to be almost insensitive to pain. In 1835dog fighting as a sport became illegal in England. Therefore, the Old English Bulldog had outlived hisusefulness in England and his days were numbered. However, emigrants did have a use for such dogs in theNew World. Back in England, they proceeded to

eliminate the undesirable 'fierce' characteristics and topreserve and accentuate the finer qualities. Within a fewgenerations, the English Bulldog became one of thefinest physical specimens, minus its original viciousness, stamina, strength, speed, and intelligence.

In the 17th century, bulldogs were used forbullbaiting(as well asbearbaiting)agamblingsport popular in the17th century with wagers laid while trained bulldogsleapt at a bull lashed to a post. The bulldog's typicalmeans of attack included latching onto the animal's snoutand attempting to suffocate it.[11]

However, the bulldog's early role was not limited to

    otros perros omascotas.

sport. In mid-17th century New York, bulldogs wereused as a part of a city-wide round-up effort led bygovernorRichard Nicolls. Because cornering and leadingwild bulls was dangerous, bulldogs were trained to seizea bull by its nose long enough for a rope to be secured

    around its neck.

    [12]

The use of dogs for fighting withother dogs or other animals was banned in theUnitedKingdomby theCruelty to Animals Act 1835, butBulldogs as pets were continually promoted by dogdealerBill George.[13]

In time, the original old English bulldog was crossedwith the pug. The outcome was a shorter, wider dog withabrachycephalicskull. Though today's bulldog lookstough, he cannot perform the job he was originallycreated for, as he cannot withstand the rigors of running

and being thrown from a bull, and cannot grip with sucha short muzzle.

The oldest single breed specialty club is The BulldogClub (England), which was formed in 1878. Members ofthis club met frequently at the Blue Post pub onOxfordStreetinLondon. There they wrote the first standard ofperfection for the breed. In 1891 the two top bulldogs,Orry and Dockleaf, competed in a contest to see whichdog could walk the farthest.Orrywas reminiscent of theoriginal bulldogs, lighter boned and very athletic.Dockleaf was smaller and heavier set, more like modernbulldogs. Dockleaf was declared the winner that year.Although some argued that the older version of thebulldog was more fit to perform, the modern versionslooks won over the fans of the breed because they provedthey were equally as fit and athletic in the walkingcompetition.
