What is Twitter?• Social Networking/Microblogging service

• 140 characters of text based posts called “Tweets”

What’s the point?• To share useful/relevant content to like minded people• Build your network• Market your work, products, services• Establish strong brand• Become an authority• Find out what other people are talking about• Eavesdrop• Join the conversation• Ask/answer questions• Learn new things from other industry experts

Your profile• Choose a username – should be the same as your company or

similar

• Choosing an avatar– For a company your avatar should be your logo

• Bio– 160 characters!– Clearly define what the company does and who tweets from the company

account

• Be sure to include your web address

Followers/Following

Who to Follow?• Your clients/customers/friends/industry leaders• Look at the people you are following and who they are following

Followers• Look to see who is following you – follow back if relevant

Private/Public Accounts• Your account should be public

Tweeting – Lingo• A tweet – the 140 character line of text you send

• Tweeted – past tense

• Twitter – name of the tool only!

Tweeting – What to say?• Think about your followers (or the audience you’d like!)

• Make it useful/relevant/interesting

• Don’t just self promote

• Link to useful content

• Link to articles/blog posts on your website

• Join in the conversation – see what other’s are saying

• Have opinions – but don’t be controversial (unless this is part of your branding!)

Hashtags – What are they?

• A way of categorising your tweets

• Makes your tweet easier to find – anyone that searches for ‘digital media’ for example will see you tweet

Hashtags – How do I use it?• Think about how people will search/what they will search• Don’t over use hashtags• Use either in words relevant within your tweet:

@mentions/replies• @username allows you to specifically mention a user in a tweet

• If that user is following you it will show up in their timeline (Tweets)

If they don’t follow you they’ll still be able to see you’ve mentioned them in their @Mentions feed (called @ Connect):

@mentions – Best Practice• Regularly check your @mentions

• Reply to users that have mentioned you – engage in conversation!

• Start the conversation – reply to users who have tweeted an interesting point

• Remember @mentions are public! If a user follows you and someone you are mentioning they will see the mention in their timeline

Mentioning/Replying to Tweets• To reply mouse over the tweet and click the ‘Reply’ button:

the right user:

Direct Messages (DMs)• Direct Messages or DMs are private messages that only you and the

other person can see

• You can only DM people who you are following AND are following you

• You can send a DM in two ways:

• 1) Through “Direct Messages”• 2) By prefixing your tweet with d

messages and then New message

Retweets or RTs• Retweets are a way of sharing information and giving credit to the person who

originally shared the idea

• You can retweet by hovering over the tweet and selecting the Retweet button:

• You can also retweet by prefixing RT before the text. This is useful if you have additional

• comments.

• Best Practice: Always mention the orgininal tweet (@username) when retweeting

Other Useful Tools• Trending Topics – what the majority of

twitter users are talking about

• Lists – You can create your own lists to manage who you follow

• URL shorteners – e.g. bit.ly – Allows you to save space in tweets and analyse click through

• Twitter tools – hootsuite, tweetdeck, echofon (use to schedule tweets, and manage multiple accounts)

Online Presence• Tweet regularly – daily at least

• Tone - professional yet approachable

• Remember you are representing your company!

• Spelling and grammar is important!

• Clear and concise – Tweets should be clear, easy to read and add value
