9 shot analysis of indie folk music video

Mise-En- Scene In these 3 shots from the Mise-en-scene, we as an audience can see clear themes or some common trends that run through the Indie Folk Genre. Location: The location of this video is in a forest clearing (and in some parts a forest). As a forest clearing its natural this conforms to the indie folk genre as most of the locations are natural and very scenic, as shown through other videos. Costume & Makeup: As we can see from the 3 shots, mainly the first and third, the costume is very individual and quite weird however it is personal to the artists in the video. It is hard to see from these shots in particular but throughout the video there makeup is kept completely natural of course, this also is the same for the hair. This is another common thing to see in a music video of this genre. There is also a use of wolf masks, this could be used to show a “relationship between the lyrics and visuals” as the song is named Wolf and it is mention in the song. Props: The only props used in this video is the wolf masks and this is only to convey a point in the video it does not actually put any meaning to the video; it is simply done because the song is called Wolf so its shows a relation. This is again a common trend in indie folk videos. Lighting: The lighting is low key, as shown in all 3 shots. The video makes it seem as if the only light is from the fire but however in certain shots, shown in shot 2, the lighting is distorted into psychedelic colours that flash like a strobe. This could be to add the surreal atmosphere that many indie folk videos create. Body Language: As shown from the first and third shot the body language in this video is very unnatural and rigid, shown by the two girl’s straight forward and stiff posture but also by the way they hold each other’s hands. This makes the two artists look quite uncomfortable.

In these 3 shots that illustrate the editing techniques in this video, it will also show common trends and conventions used in the indie folk genre.

In this video there is a very unique editing technique that has been used. Many times in the video there is a kaleidoscope effect on screen, as shown in shot 4. This is extremely unique and is something I have never seen be used in an indie folk video, from the one I have viewed. The way for this to have been done is to have filmed the footage first then, create the background and finally put the image on the background, by then using an editing programme to create this effect. It is very individual to this video so is therefore not a common trend but is very cool.

In shot 5 the use of focusing is apparent. This is an extremely common trend on the indie folk genre and is used in many of the videos I have viewed, if not all I have seen.

Another editing technique that was used in this video is slow motion. This is again very common in indie folk music videos as it usually creates an atmosphere or adds emotion/drama to the video.

In the sixth shot illustrated there is again another unique editing technique. This one however uses an image from the video that occurs often, shown in the third shot, which has then been placed in the centre of a different background. Unlike the kaleidoscope shot this background is free moving on its own, as the wolves around the outside move in a circle freely. This is again may have been created by creating a background on a specific editing software or a

In these 3 shots, the camerawork is illustrated through 3 shots. It will also show common trends and conventions used in the indie folk genre.

One of the most common trends seen in indie folk music videos is the range of shot types used, as shown through all 9 shots there is many shots such as Close-ups, Extreme Close-ups, Medium shots and Long Shots. This is an extremely common trend seen in indie folk music videos.

There is minimal camerawork used in indie folk music videos and this video definitely conforms to this convention. The only movement detected in this video is tracking, shown through shot 9. AS well as tracking through the forest. Other than that movement most of the camerawork is completely still, possibly on a tripod.

There is also some evidence of diverse shot angles in this video, as shown in shot 1 and 9. As shown in the first shot, there is a high angle shot; the use of the different angles gives the audience something to stay interested in. Same with the ninth shot, by using a shot in line with the subject it makes the viewer’s more interested in what is going on on-screen. In indie folk videos this is not usually a common trend but some videos do like to add different angles, to ensure audience attraction/attention.

Also shown in this video is the use of direct address. This is used many times in the videos, even though the extreme close up shots. This gives the audience a connection with the video as it makes the audience involved in the video. This is again a very
