These are to be used to help you with the Safety Test. For every question that you miss you have to write the question plus the answer 2 times. GENERAL SAFETY RULES questions 1-10 Report all injuries, even though slight, to your instructor. Caution any student you see not following the safety rules. Wear suitable eye protection when engaged in any activity where eye hazards may exist. Keep tools from hanging off the edge of the benches. Fasten or remove loose clothing and roll sleeves above your elbows before operating any machine. Keep floor clear of scraps and litter. The designated area of operators safety zone around a machine is to protect all the students and the instructor Keep bench, cabinet, and lockers doors closed. Any liquid spilled on the floor should be wiped up immediately because it may cause someone to slip. Exercise care in handling large, heavy, and long pieces of material. Rags containing oil, gasoline, alcohol, shellac, paint, vanish, or lacquer must be kept in a covered container. Before using any power equipment you should obtain permission from your instructor.

GENERAL SAFETY RULESquestions 1-10

DRILL PRESSquestions 11-16

Obtain permission from your instructor before using the drill press.

When drilling a large hole the drill press work should be held in a vise and clamped to the table.

Make all adjustments to the drill press when the machine has stopped moving.

Make sure no one but you is inside the operator's zone.

Never leave the drill press until the drill has stopped moving.You use a low speed when drilling large holes and when you’re using hard wood

Wear safety glasses when operating the machine.

Back drill out as soon as hole is drilled.

Why do you need to remove the chuck key the chuck key will be thrown out of the machine at a great force.

Use a brush not your hands to remove shavings from the drill press.

Never leave the machine while the drill is still moving.

When the drill bit catches in the wood you should decrease pressure feed.

JIG SAWquestions 16-20

Obtain permission from instructor before using the Jig Saw.

Install the jig saw blade to cut on the down stroke of the saw

Only cut stock that has a flat bottom.

Before you start the jig saw you should check the hold down adjustment to make sure there is slight pressure against the stock.

Make sure that you are the only one in the operator zone when you start the machine.

Wear safety glasses when operating the Jig Saw.

JIG SAW (continued)

Hold on to the stock firmly with both hands when cutting.

Prior to starting the jig saw you should turn the machine by hand to be sure all the adjustments and moving parts are working properly.

Feed the material into the machine at a moderate rate of speed.

Keep your fingers and hands away from the blade on the jig saw.

Do not force the stock into the jig saw because the blade could break.

Never leave the machine until it has come to a complete stop.

BAND SAWquestions 21-25

Obtain permission from your instructor before using the band saw.

Only cut stock that has a flat surface.

All adjustments on the band saw only when the machine is at a dead stop.

Make sure you are the only one inside the operator zone when starting the machine.

Wear safety glasses.

Keep fingers a safe distance away from the blade.

Set the upper saw guide of the band saw one forth inch or less above the stock.

Keep saw blade from twisting while cutting curved pieces.

You never stand on the right of the machine if the blade breaks because that is a dangerous place to be.

When is comes necessary to back out stock from a long cut on the band saw you should stop the machine then back out the stock.

If the saw blade breaks or comes off you should step away, shut off the power, and then notify the instructor.

Never leave the machine until it has come to a complete stop.

TABLE SAWquestions 26-31

Obtain permission from the instructor before operating the table saw.

Wear safety glasses when operating the machine.

The guard must be down when you start the machine or it can cause serious injuries to the operator.

Never cut freehand always use the fence or a miter gauge.

Always maintain control of the stock between the fence and the blade. Use your hand or a push stick to push the stock away from the blade.

Never place your hands in line with the cut.

Never remove scrap wood from around the blade until the machine has been turned off and come to a complete stop.

Table saws should never stick up more than 1/8" above the surface of the stock.

JOINTERquestions 32-35

Obtain permission from the instructor before operating the Jointer.

Wear safety glasses when operating the jointer.

Never use wood that has cracks or knots.

The jointer is used for smoothing clean lumber

Only make adjustments to the machine when it is at a dead stop.

In adjusting the depth of cut on the jointer, you should limit the cut to 1/8" or less

Make sure you are the only one standing in the operators zone when you turn on the machine.

The shortest length of stock that can be safely cut on the jointer is 12"

Before picking up the stock that has been surfaced, you should make sure you have pushed the stock past the knives so that the guard will return the cutter knives.

SURFACERquestions 36-40

Obtain permission from the instructor before operating the Surfacer.

When you start the machine make sure no one but you are in the operator’s zone.

Wear safety glasses when using the surfacer.

Make adjustments to the machine only when it is at a complete stop.

Limit cut to 1/8" for narrow pieces of stock and 1/16" for wide pieces of stock.

You should avoid standing directly behind the board being surfaced when using the surfacer because the machine could kick back the wood towards you.

The shortest board that can be surfaced on the surfacer is 12 inches.

You must remove all knots and dried glue before surfacing a piece of stock.

Allow material to travel completely through the surfacer before making and additional depth of cut adjustment.

POWER SANDING MACHINESquestions 41-45

Obtain permission from the instructor before operating the sanding machine.

When you start the machine make sure no one but you are in the operator’s zone.

Wear safety glasses when using the machine power sander.

Do not operate a sander with a torn belt or a loose disc.

Never sand small pieces with the machine power sander.

Disconnect the power when changing sand paper.

On a portable sander make sure the sander is off before plugging in.

Always clamp or hold the stock securely when using portable electric sanders.

POWER SANDING MACHINES (continued)

Keep your fingers away from the sand paper because it can easily remove your skin.

Always let portable sanders reach full speed before setting them on the stock.

Always lift portable sanders from the stock before turning them off.

Wait until portable sanders come to a complete stop before setting them down.

ROUTERquestions 46-50

When you start the machine make sure no one but you are in the operator’s zone.

Wear safety glasses when using the router.

Prior to using the portable router you should obtain permission from the instructor.

Before changing bits or making adjustments on the portable router you should make sure the electrical cord is disconnected from the power source.

When turning on the power to the portable router you should hold the machine tightly with both hands.

Feed the cutter slowly into the material.

Turn off power and rest machine on its side when you are finished.

When cutting with the router you should keep hands clear of the revolving cutter
