Legislator Mills Presents Donation to Eden Library
Erie County Legislator John J. Mills is pleased to an-nounce that the 3rd annual Eden Library Hot Dog Roast Fundraiser, held July 16, raised $1,266 to support the li-brary’s efforts to provide quality programming and materi-als to the greater Eden community. The donation was pre-sented to Library Director Joyce Muguda on Aug. 13 during a presentation at the library. Also attending the presen-tation were Library Board Vice President Phil Muck and Trustees Bettyann Neifer and Marilyn Antos. “I want to thank to everyone who attended this year’s fundraiser. We had an outstanding turnout. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we surpassed last year’s to-tal, raising $1,266 for the library. In 2013 this event raised $1,056. This funding will help the library offer the pro-gramming and materials that residents enjoy using at the library,” said Legislator Mills. Legislator Mills’ Hot Dog Roast Fundraisers are expect-ed to raise $10,000 this year for the library’s in his district. The Eden Chamber in the 50’s In 1949 the Eden Business Men’s Association changed its name to the Eden Chamber of Commerce. The First president, Marion Schwal, was a coal and fuel dealer. The directors at the time were Joseph Buntihiel, Si-las Williams, Jay Palmerton, John Weiman, George Guen-ther, Clarence Smith, Charles Pearson and Stuart Eisile. Eden had two wells that supplied two water districts. The problem with the wells was a heavy iron content and rust in the water. In 1952 the Chamber formed a commit-tee to look into getting Erie County Water to supply the needs of the town. In 1958 the town of Eden petitioned the Water Authority and water from Lake Erie began to flow into Eden homes and businesses in 1962. In 1952 Leon Olson, a director of the Chamber, started a unique business from his home called Rhyme University, which marked Kindergarten diploma’s across the country. The business was sold in 1972 to a California Company. In 1953 the Chamber started a push for a new Post of-fice, and also assisted the Town Board in appointing a Plan-ning Board. Also in 53 & 54 the Chamber became active in a Bypass Plan, adopted by the State of New York to bypass Eden with a new route from Hamburg to North Collins. The Chamber voted against it stating that it would split the town in half. Later, this plan was dropped by the State. Knowing that for the town to have growth, sewers would be needed, the Chamber also became involved in that is-sue. Cost for the treatment plant was an estimated to be $650,000 in 1955. The treatment was completed in 1975 for an estimated cost of 24 million dollars. In 1956, John Munich, a partner in the “Garden of Eden” restaurant, organized a night at the Buffalo Bison baseball park, which at the time was known as Offermann Stadium located on Woodlawn & Ferry Street. John rented buses to and from the Garden Restaurant and the Ball Game. On the 4th Eden night, the attendance was 570 and the Eden Fireman’s Band played at the Park that evening The Chamber Presidents on the 50’s were: Marion Schw-al, Leon Olson, James Miller, Robert Maier, Silas Williams, Edward Agle, and Jacob Smith.

Charles Alsheimer, Whitetail Deer Expert, Coming to Eden
Charles Alsheimer, a nationally known whitetail deer ex-pert, hunter, photographer and speaker, will be coming to Eden on September 13th. Charlie will give a talk on white-tail deer biology and habits, his famous analysis of the rut timing, presentation of his wildlife photography as well as his personal story of faith. This talk is being sponsored by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church’s upcoming community sup-port center, L.E.G.O.S. House, in an effort to bring a lot of people together to hear Charlie and spend an evening talk-ing and learning about deer. In addition to the show will be many door prize give-aways and a Chinese auction, it total so far is almost $4,000 of outdoor equipment to hand out. Top door prizes are a Mathews bow and a muzzleloader. To help Erie County women without health in-surance obtain necessary breast care services, TLC Health Network and the Erie County Cancer Servic-es program are sponsoring a Free Breast Cancer Screen-ing on Wednesday, Aug. 20 at Gowanda Urgent Care & Medical Center, 34 Com-mercial St. The event, held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will include free clinical breast exams, mammograms and health information for par-ticipants. Registration is currently under way. The Free Breast Cancer Screening is open to all women, age 40 or older, who do not have health in-surance and have not had a mammogram in the past year. Through the Erie County Cancer Services Program, eligible partici-pants may also qualify for free follow-up testing and treatment, if needed. “We are so proud to be long time partners with the Cancer Services program

Both breast and cervical cancer are very treatable if detected ear-ly,” said Lauralee Sprague, Nurse Practitioner at the Gowanda Urgent Care & Medical Center. “Everyone has the right to access high quality health care regard-less of their financial situ-ation or insurance status. This is one way we can im-prove access to those servic-es.” In addition, on Friday, Aug. 22, individuals who
qualify can also obtain free pap/pelvic screenings. To determine eligibil-ity for the August 20 Free Breast Cancer Screening, Erie County residents are asked to call 716-858-7376. “We want to help area wom-en continue their journey toward better health,” said Dr. Gale R. Burstein, Erie County Commissioner of Health. “An annual mam-mogram is still one of the best ways to detect breast cancer early, when com-plete recovery is possible. A lack of health insurance
should not prevent wom-en from getting this vital care.” Breast cancer is the second most common can-cer in women and the lead-ing cause of cancer-related deaths in women ages 40-55. According to the Na-tional Cancer Institute, one in eight American women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Recently, TLC Health Net-work officials announced the addition of new modern diagnostic imaging services at the recently-expanded Gowanda medical center. Scott Butler, Divisional Di-rector of Business Develop-ment for TLC Health Net-work said, services such as mammography are now of-fered in Gowanda as part of the organization’s continu-ing commitment to provide much-needed, high-quality services to the communi-ty. Full-field mammogra-phy testing is offered with equipment from Hologic®, Inc. All studies are read by board certified radiologists.
