prior to the Europeans

having arrived.

In the 1600's the

Europeans quickly

colonized and took over

much of North America.

Defining North America

North America as a geographic name

means different things to different

people.

To physical geographers, North America

refers to the landmass that extends from

the shores of the Arctic Ocean to Panama.

To human geographers, North America

consists of Canada and the United States.

Canada's History

In the 16th century, French and

British settlers arrived.

Land disputes between farmers

and fur traders led to four wars

between 1689 and 1763.

The final war, called the French

and Indian War, left the British in

control of Canada, but French

influence remains strong even

today.

Natural Resources in Canada

Canada has a small population of

only about 35 million.

The Canadian people are rich in

natural resources.

This abundance of natural

resources in Canada has allowed

it to prosper. Many other countries

do not have the same resources

for feeding their populations,

supporting industry, and meeting

their energy needs.

For centuries native

people lived across the

vast expanse that would

States. In the early 17th

century, settlers moved
