Welcome to our new school year! Please take some time to review this syllabus. I am Mrs. Kemner and I will be teaching four disciplines of Math this year. I have outlined pertinent information for students and parents. If you have an questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at [email protected].

The following are the expectations for this school year:

Course Description: Math 7:

In grade 7, instructional time will focus on four critical areas:

✦ Developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships;✦ Developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and

working with expressions and linear equations;✦ Solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric

constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume;

✦ Drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

Course Description: Math 8:

In Grade 8, instructional time will focus on three critical areas:

✦ Formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations;

✦ Grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships;

✦ Analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

Course Description: Math 7 Accelerated:

This course demands a faster pace for teaching and learning. This course compacts all of grade 7 mathematics and most of the grade 8 mathematics

course into one year. See details above for Math 7 and Math 8.

Course Description: Integrated Math 1

This year in Integrated Math 1 we will be studying mathematical concepts using a textbook entitled Big Ideas Integrated Mathematics I. During each

unit we will be building skills to meet the California Standards for Integrated Math I.

In Integrated Math 1, instructional time will focus on:

✦Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities

✦Linear and Exponential Functions

✦Transformational Geometry

✦Analysis of lines and Shapes

Materials Needed for All classes:

✦ Non-spiral notebook paper. (non-spiral to keep the class clean)✦ Pencils for everyday use (mechanical pencils are great)✦ Pens (any color)✦ Highlighter✦ Scientific calculator!!!! Must be scientific but find the cheapest!✦ Protractor✦ Dry erase markers✦ Class Syllabus signed (or note from parent saying they read the

syllabus)✦

Grading Policy

Page 3: 7th & 8th Grade Math Syllabus Math 7, Math 7 Accelerated ...mrskemners.weebly.com/uploads/4/6/7/0/4670766/syllabus_2016_2017... · 7th & 8th Grade Math Syllabus Math 7, Math 7 Accelerated,

In all classes, there will be three types of assessments and a participation grade. The weight of the grades are:

1. Homework – 35% of grade2. Tests/Quizzes- 50% of grade3. Projects- 10%4. Participation –5% of grade

All grades will be calculated on a percentage basis and grades will be determined as follows:

90-100% A 60-69% D80-89% B 59% and below F70-79% C

Absentee Policy:

Students are responsible for all missed work when absent, and it is their responsibility to get the assignments when they return and to submit them for grading. When students are absent the day of a test, they must take the responsibility to make arrangements for a make-up test with me. Important: If a student is enrolled in an accelerated class, they can be dismissed from the course at the discretion of the teacher, for excessive absences.

Student Expectations:

The following behaviors are expected from each student in class every day:• Come to class prepared and on time• Do not distract or bother others• Listen and follow directions when given• Turn in assignments on time• Use proper behavior in all areas of the school• Respect feelings, rights, and properties of others• Be kind

Tutoring:

This year I will be tutoring for math one day a week to start. This is the schedule but is subject to change. Any student with a grade below 70% will have mandatory tutoring until the grade is raised.

Wed. 2:30-3:30

Please take note of the following policies in place:

Dress Code

We insist that our students follow the school dress code. Our experience confirms that when students follow the dress code, we have fewer discipline issues and we can concentrate more on education. Please take a moment to read through the section in the student handbook (available online at sra.mn) that covers the dress code. Students who violate this policy risk losing valuable class time and will also earn consequences, starting with detention and moving to more serious discipline.

Computer Use

We expect students in our one-to-one Macbook program to always use their computers appropriately. Middle school teachers rarely allow “free time” for students and their computers. Students need to remember that games or YouTube or other non-educational sites (of any kind) on their computers will earn discipline and consequences for misuse of computer.

In addition, students must remember to charge their laptops every night at home. Students who bring their laptops to school without it being fully charged will also earn discipline. While on campus, students must have their laptops always secure in their possession—with the exception of P.E., break, and lunch when they will be stored in locked classrooms. If a student leaves their laptop unattended there will be consequences.

I look forward to working with both you and your child to ensure a successful year.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kemner
