75th Anniversary Capital Campaign and Strategic Plan Update Thanks to the generosity St. James parishioners and friends, we have reached almost two-thirds of our $3 million goal! Commitments to the Capital Campaign as of May 31, 2007 total $1,977,131. These commitments have been made by 270 families (parishioners and friends) of St. James. Our work continues! What more can we achieve? Consider the following: • St. James has 725 individual dues-paid members and over 2000 families in our parish. • Of these familes, 270 have made an active commitment to date. We extend our gratitude to them for their gen- erosity and support of the church and its mission. • We encourage our remaining 1,730 families to make a meaningful gift to St. James! If you have not made a commitment, please join your fellow parishioners by making a pledge. St. James needs your commitment. This is the time—make a difference. Our goal is to have 100% participation. Every pledge, of every size, matters and makes a real difference. MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN

The Future Is BrightWe often hear the phrase “how will history judge.” How will his-

tory judge the decisions our leaders make? How will history judgethe effectiveness of our educational system? How will historyjudge the Boston Red Sox for paying $150 million dollars for a start-ing pitcher from Japan? The phrase applies to just about any pre-sent day event or series of events. It also applies to our steward-ship of the St. James Armenian Apostolic Church. How will histo-ry judge our stewardship of the legacy entrusted to us by thefounders of our church? While we will know in a year or two if theBoston Red Sox made a wise investment, we may not know foranother 75 years how history will judge our stewardship of thechurch; but if you look around our church, you can see all the signsof a bright future for St. James and I am confident that history willjudge us as good stewards of the church.

Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, the initial phasesof our 75th Anniversary Capital Campaign have been a success, and while we have not yet reached our fundraising goals, we are offto a great start. The early success of our fundraising campaign canbe seen in the repair and restoration of our church. It has beenalmost one year since Badarak was held in the Cultural Centerwhile the church sanctuary was being renovated. New carpet andpaint, including a breathtaking restoration of the murals over thealtar, and the refinishing of the pews has truly transformed ourchurch sanctuary. In addition to restoring the interior of the church,we have all seen the scaffolding erected around the exterior of thechurch. The much needed and long overdue re-pointing of the exte-rior masonry work, repairs to the roof, gutters and downspouts, and repairs to the heating system are all vital in order to insure thatour church will continue to stand strong as it welcomes future gen-erations to worship in the same place where their parents, grand-parents and great grandparents once worshiped. In addition to therenovation of the church sanctuary and exterior, plans are also

underway for the creation of a gift shop in the lower level of thechurch and for the major renovation of the cultural center.

As you can imagine, such an undertaking requires careful plan-ning in order to maximize the efficiency of such a renovation pro-ject while minimizing the disruption to the day to day operations ofthe church and the many programs which are housed in the cultur-al center. While you may not see construction activity going on atthe cultural center just yet, you can be assured that the CapitalAssets Planning Subcommittee is busy soliciting and reviewingproposals and will keep parishioners advised of when the culturalcenter renovations will commence. In addition to the repair andrenovation of our buildings, the 75th Anniversary CapitalCampaign is also committed to providing more robust and essen-tial programming for all of our parishioners. Our Child Care Center, which has been open for several months on Sunday mornings, is asuccess. Parents with pre-school aged children now have the abil-ity to attend Sunday services while their children are being caredfor in a safe, loving, Christian environment by dedicated, profes-sional staff. Plans are being considered to make the Child CareCenter available during other church functions and events. Oursenior transportation program is in the final stages of planning andwe hope to implement the program soon. The Strategic PlanningCommittee also remains committed to strengthening and expand-ing our youth programming and ministry dedicated to helping andeducating our youth to become good Christians and good stewardsof the church.

We need to prepare our children to be good stewards of thechurch, and we do this by setting a good example ourselves. Onecannot look to the future without also looking at the past. The pridethat we feel when remembering our friends, relatives and lovedones who sacrificed and gave of their time, their talents and theirtreasure to build St. James and the cultural center should be thesame pride that our great grandchildren feel when remembering usfor taking such good care of these precious gifts. It is this pride thatinspires us to do all we can do, in honor of those that came beforeus, and it is this same pride that will inspire future generations topick up the torch and continue the St. James legacy for the next 75years.

I would like to thank all of you who, during myillness and stages of treatment, have sent flowers andcards, conveyed your thoughts, concerns, and especiallyyour prayers for my recovery.

I thank you also for the love-filled food that many of you provided for me and my family. I truly felt Godsustained me through all of you in your own special ways.

May we all always feel His blessing and care throughwhatever we are challenged to endure.

With love and thankfulness,Yn. Rosemarie Davidian

A Special Thank You…

The Sunday School’s journey to Easter beganon Poon Paregentan, Sunday, February 18, 2007.The theme of the traditional family fun day wasan “Island Afternoon” complete with an islanddinner, leis, music, dancing and games.

The journey progressed into Lent, a time ofdiscipline, self reflection, penance, fasting, church attendance, prayer andgiving. Each student received “Words to Live By”, forty days of God’s wordthrough the Armenian Lectionary, In this selection of Bible passages to beread daily during Lent.

Our Sunday School participated in the Eastern Diocesan Lenten Drivewhich this year benefited both World Vision’s Darfur Emergency Relief andThe Fund for Armenian Relief’s Project Smile. Children enthusiastically raisedmoney in little “take out” containers, and in their enthusiasm to help “takeout” pain and suffering in the lives of others, our students raised over $2000!Thank you to all who supported our drive!

On Sunday, March 25, 2007, children from the Child Care Center andKindergarten through 4th Grades assembled Easter Baskets for delivery to theWatertown Food Pantry located at St. Patrick’s Church. This annual event isdone in conjunction with the ACYOA Jrs. Students in Grades 5-11 preparedboxed lunches and personal care items for the residents of Fr. Bill’s Place inQuincy, MA.

After the Lenten season, we arrived at Palm Sunday, and students in the2nd and 3rd Grades carried palms in the morning procession around the sanc-tuary at the beginning of Badarak.

On Holy Tuesday evening, five young ladies from the fourth grade, accom-panied by 5 young ladies from the upper grades, participated in the Service ofthe Handmaidens.

On April 1, 2007 the ACYOA Seniors and Juniorsonce again hosted their annual Palm Sunday Youth DayBanquet. Over 300 parishioners gathered together foran afternoon of good food and fellowship. After a toastgiven by Crosby Goshgarian, the parish was treated toa delicious steak dinner wonderfully prepared by StanTagarelis and Aras Cinar. Our extreme gratitude to all

of the ACYOA members who served the afternoon’s banquet. The program was opened by remarks by the ACYOA Juniors Chairman Christine

Hovsepian and the ACYOA Seniors Chairman Jennifer Tagarelis. After Mrs. BrendaKhederian,Youth Director, shared her remarks the guests, the speaker of the day,Yn.Natasha Aljalian, opened by sharing the activities of the ACYOA. She then spoke toboth the parishioners and to the youth of St. James on how we must all work as achurch family to support and uplift one another, and to always strive for more andseek to please God.

The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of the ACYOA Alumni Awardto Richard Tarvezian, Esq. A past ACYOA chairman, Richard has been extremelyinvolved in all aspects of life at St. James, including serving as a Diocesan Delegateand as Sunday School Superintendent to one of the largest Sunday Schools in churchhistory. Richard has been and continues to be an amazing role model for our youthtoday. The afternoon drew to a close with closing remarks by our Pastor Fr.ArakelAljalian, who congratulated Richard, his wife Ann and daughter Talene.

vice which is symbolic of Christ washing the feet of His Disciples. Immediately follow-ing this service, the 10th Grade class held its 32nd Annual Passover Meal. This tradi-tion is an arrangement of the Passover meal and the Last Supper as a historical drama.

The Annual Children’s Easter Holy Communion was held on Saturday, April 7, 2007.Breakfast hosted by the Sunday School and the Armenian School immediately fol-lowed the service. Children were treated to a karate presentation with an inspirationalChristian message following the breakfast.

We arrived at Easter Sunday, with our students gathering together in church and inclass to celebrate Christ’s Resurrection. And so the journey to Easter Sunday wascomplete. The preparation, the reflection, the prayers, and readings, the giving and theservice – all gathering and rejoicing in Holy Easter!

On February 10th our students dressed asKatchen Vartan and his warriors and performedat the school’s Annual Vartanantz Program. Ahighlight of the afternoon was the presentationof our own Der Arsen’s life-long work called“From Haig to Armen.” We commend the pastparents and friends of the Armenian School whocame together to prepare a wonderful luncheonfor the event; the main dish of course being thelegendary harrissa.

On April 7, 2007, the Armenian School, in con-junction with the Sunday school participated inAnnual Children’s Communion and breakfast. The morning was filled with joy and fellowshipand our students participated in the fun-filledevent. There was a lively, interactive martial artsdemonstration, a traditional Easter egg-crackingcontest among the attendees and a Easter eggdecorating contest (the winners of which wereKatya Maserejian, Nareg Kalaydjian and DeannaMinasian.)

As is tradition at St. James, the Armenian School stu-dents read passages from the Holy Gospels in Armenianbefore and during Badarak. Following Badarak, Der Arakelperformed a Home Blessing, or Doonorhnek, service, fol-lowing which the Armenian School teachers and parentsoffered parishioners a beautiful and bountiful table filledwith traditional Armenian pastries and delicacies.

The Armenian school is currently registering students for2007-2008 academic year. It is a wonderful environment tolearn Armenian and keep our language, culture, and her-itage alive.

CHILDREN’S RECEPTION & ORIENTATION CENTER

April 5, 2007To: Ms Nancy Kasabian, St James Church of MADear Ms. Kasabian,

Children’s Reception and Orientation Centre of Fund forArmenian Relief expresses its thankfulness to you for 12 boxes ofclothes donated. Unfortunately there is an increasing level ofpoverty in Armenia and lots of families and children are not ableto fulfill their primary needs such as clothes, food, toys, etc. Andsuch donations as you and other FAR donors did, help us to satis-fy their needs.

Probably you are informed that FAR CROC programs and ser-vices such as Shelter and Crisis Intervention, Child Protection“Hotline and Helpline”, Child Protection Network, Child ProtectionPublic Forum as well as “Foster care” help us to be aware of thefamilies and children at high risk within the whole Republic. Thesefamilies and children are not satisfied even with simple vitalthings: clothes and food.

Here, in CROC we are trying to combine with two importantcomponents, both the professional support of the Centre andother packages of resources (clothes, foods, involvement in nec-essary services, finding job, etc) in order to help them to ease thepossible further risks. Thanks to such donations and our profes-sional support we are trying to help the children and families athigh risks to overcome the “underclass” situation.

We assure you that all the clothes will be directed to the sat-isfaction of needs of children and families of Republic of Armeniawho are in difficult situations and at high risks. Thank you onceagain for your support in realizing the goal of our project.

With deepest regards M. Antonyan, CROC Director Save the Date…
