Woman is Fit, Yet Can Barely StandDEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 66-year-old white female, 5 feet, 5 inches tall (was 5 feet, 6 inches), weighing 170 pounds. Even though I use gym weight machines for upper and lower body three times a week, walk daily for two miles and spend 15 minutes on a mo-tion trainer at the gym, I cannot stand up easily after gardening on my knees or getting on my knees on the fl oor. Is there anything I can do to regain the ability to get up off the fl oor/ground without a struggle? -- S.C.ANSWER: It sounds to me that despite your good exer-cise regimen, you may have weakness specifi cally in your thighs -- what we call “proximal muscle weak-ness.” There is a very long list of medical illnesses that affect these muscles spe-cifi cally (my textbook lists 28 different diagnoses), in-cluding common conditions such as low thyroid levels and vitamin D defi ciency. I would recommend a visit to your doctor for a careful exam of your nerves and muscles to see if my suspi-cion is correct. Your doctor may suggest a trial of vita-min D.If no medical cause is found, I would work specif-ically on strengthening the hip muscles, which extend the thighs. A trainer at the gym can show you those exercises.***DEAR DR ROACH: I am a 65-year-old man, and two weeks ago I developed a painful hemorrhoid almost overnight. I had never had hemorrhoids before.

My primary-care doctor ex-amined me and said I had a “thrombosed hemorrhoid.” It is not very large and in the past week, the pain has diminished, but the bulging vein is still present, albeit less tender. Should I have this removed surgically, or will it eventually disappear? -- S.D.ANSWER: A hemorrhoid, a normal vascular structure, can develop a blood clot (“thrombosis”), and then can be exquisitely painful. Often, the clot is removed at the time of examination, giving immediate relief. In most cases, the clot will be reabsorbed within a few days. However, in very large hemorrhoids, occasionally surgery is necessary.There is some suggestion that thrombosed hemor-rhoids may indicate a high-er risk for colorectal cancer. You should be sure that you have had a recent colonos-copy. ***DEAR DR. ROACH: A few

years ago, my granddaugh-ter, who was raised in Cos-ta Rica, got Dengue fever. I heard that if you get it asecond time, it can be fatal.Is this justifi ed? I am wor-ried about her going back toCosta Rica for holidays.Is there a vaccination or spe-cifi c treatment? -- A.R.B.ANSWER: Dengue fever iscommon, but people who live in areas with Dengueare at much higher risk thantravelers. The worst com-plication of Dengue, calledDengue hemorrhagic fever, happens in people who pre-viously have had an episodeof Dengue, so the concernfor your granddaughter isjustifi ed.There is no commerciallyavailable vaccine for Den-gue (yet), and no specifi ctreatment. The most effec-tive prevention for travelersis avoiding mosquitos bystaying in well-screened orair-conditioned buildings,wearing protective clothingand using effective mosqui-to repellant.

PICKS OF THE WEEK-Far From the Mad-ding Crowd’ (PG-13) -- Bathesheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) has a rare opportunity for women of her time -- she has enough wealth that she doesn’t have to marry for business rea-sons. She can pick any man she wants, which isn’t as easy as it sounds. She’s got three very different men on the line, but for each one, there are complexities to the relationship.An adaptation of a romantic and melodramatic English novel hardly seems like the place to look for takes on contemporary love, but in the hands of director Thomas Vinterberg, the country comes to life and the loveÐquadrangle stays engaging. Carey Mulligan once again shows how she can keep audiences invested in what’s going on behind her eyes. -The Salvation’ (R) -- Jon (Mads Mikkelsen, TV’s -Hannibal’), a Danish vet-eran, takes his family to the Wild West to make a new start, but their bright fu-ture is robbed by a pair of drunk dirtbags who murder his wife and son. Gilbert L. Bauer Gilbert L. Bauer passed on July 3rd 2015 at the age of 96. He was born on September 20th, 1918 and was from East Eden. De-voted husband of Dorothy F. (nee Mammoser); lov-ing stepfather of Karen (Richard) Johansen, Donna Newman, Dennis Wierzba, Wayne Wierzba, and late David Wierzba. Brother of Rosemary Tasker, Norman Bauer, Ellie Schiedal, Alfred Bauer & late Sylvester Bauer (Windy). Survived by nieces & nephews Duane & Elaine Bauer, and several grand-children, great-grandchil-dren & great-great grand-children, nieces & nephews. Predeceased by Albert and Emma Bauer. Retired from NYS DOT, served in WWII as an anti-aircraft gunner on troop carrier ship, received 4 accommodation medals. Life member of East Eden Fire Dept. Bessie Klein (nee An-dera), age 99 1/2, of North Boston, July 10, 2015. Be-loved wife of the late Har-old Klein. Loving mother of Margaret Edington and Herbert (Jeanette) Klein. Cherished grandmother of Thomas and Cynthia Ed-ington, Diana (late Rand) Rousseau, Laurie (Harold) Hendrix, Marcia (Philip) Fintak, Gregory, Kirk (Peg-gy) and Dawn Klein. Great-grandmother of Nathan and Elysia Rousseau, Raeanne Hendrix, Matthew and Joshua (Megan) Fintak, Pa-tricia, William, Jennifer and Michael (Amanda) Klein and Cathleen (Jason) Perry. Also survived by four great-great-grandchildren. Sister-in-law of Loretta Shelley and Raymond Klein. Prede-ceased by nine brothers and sisters. Friends attended a Funeral Service at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Arrange-ments by Donald M. Dem-merley Funeral Home. Robert Allen Schreiner of Fulton NY formally of Eden NY;, passed away March 11, 2015 after a long illness at age 61. Predeceased by his parents, Mildred (Schroeder) and Edward P. Schreiner and his beloved dogs, Max and Gizmo. Survived by his siblings Phil (Marie) Schreiner, Ruth (Butch) Pearl, Mary (Emory) Ford and Nancy Sch-reiner as well as three generations of nieces and nephews. Bob loved his Syracuse Orange sports, the Buffalo Bills and fishing. He worked for Crucible Industries, Solvay, NY for 41 years as a maintenance technician and was a mentor to many employees. Friends are invited to a graveside service on Saturday July 25th at 11:00 am in Eden Evergreen Cem-etery, E. Church St. Eden, NY.
