Boarding Your DogSome people travel, may have an emergency or illness and will need to find a means for the care of their dog. Some owners turn over the care of their dog to well mean-ing but untrained neighbors, friends or family, sometimes with poor results. Pets placed in the care of part time sitters often escape, get destructive at home due to being left alone longer than they are used to, and get depressed for the same reason. For a dog that is completely housebroken at your house is not uncommon for s(he )to mess inside at someone else’s house.The other alternative for your dog would be to use a good reputable boarding kennel. Every kennel is different with prices and services that vary. Some are kept in cages and taken for walks, some are where dogs are kept in a large area all together, some have large kennels with their own outdoor run and some may be kept in crates and let out at certain times. Whatever you choose, here are some important tips and considerations for finding a good kennel.• Ask friends, family, and your veterinarian for a recommendation• Do an internet Google search for kennels in your area and read the reviews; • Facebook is also becoming a good means for info• Telephone books• Take the time and visit kennels – are you allowed to tour unannounced or have to make an appt?

When at your visit - Always trust your “gut” feelings- Make sure the facility, inside and out is clean with no offensive odors- Take notice of noise condition – is it very loud from the moment you pulled in? Constantly barking dogs are a big cause of dogs stressing- Is there sufficient ventilation and light and comfortable temperature?- Are there mature responsible knowledgeable caring animal loving employees, or an operation with young inexperienced help?- Are there so many dogs that you wonder how time is spent with each dog, or a smaller operation where you and your dog doesn’t feel overwhelmed?

Questions to Ask- What is the dogs schedule like for a day- How often are dogs taken/ let outside- Do dogs go potty outside or inside where they stay- What gets done if a dog just wont potty, or messes inside instead of its outside kennel, if they have one,. What if they won’t eat or get sick- What vaccinations are required?- How often are they fed. What kind of food. Does kennel supply or bring your own- Do they get beds, toys, treats- Will they give medications, care for special needs or geriatric dogs. If so, is there an extra charge

When Leaving Your Dog -- Make sure you have all of your dogs vac. records in order, ready to give the kennel along with anything else you may be bringing- Try not getting upset – you’re dog will feel that and could become unnecessarily cautious and uneasy- Remember – You are Not the only one going on Vacation! Your dog is on vacation as well and most dogs really Do love it…there is just so much more activity and excitement going on throughout the day compared to being home alone while you may be at work!

Understanding Rabies Can Protect Pets and Their Owners The benefits of warm weather are numerous and in-clude the opportunity to spend long hours outdoors enjoying the fresh air. Increased time spent outside, whether at parks, beaches or right in one’s own back-yard, means a greater likelihood of coming into contact with wildlife. Just as people are anxious to frolic in the nice weather, so, too, is nearby wildlife. Chance encounters between people, pets and wild-life are generally uneventful. However, should such en-counters include a rabid animal, the consequences can be grave. The rabies virus affects the central nervous system, causing disease in the brain and eventually death. With-out prompt treatment, death can occur rather quickly. Lyssavirus rabies, the rabies virus, typically enters the body of a human or other animal through a bite or scratch from an infected animal. Saliva from infected animals and bat guano also may transmit rabies to hu-mans in certain circumstances. Racoons, skunks, foxes, woodchucks, and bats have been known to transmit ra-bies, while small mammals, such as squirrels, rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, chipmunks, rabbits, and hares, are only rarely infected with rabies and have not been known to cause rabies among humans in the Unit-ed States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say initial symptoms may be difficult to recognize because the fever, headache and general discomfort common to rabies infections are similar to those of many other illnesses. As rabies progresses, anxiety, paralysis, exci-tation, hallucinations, hypersalivation, and agitation can develop. A person exposed to rabies should ideally be treated within 12 to 48 hours for the best outcome. Treatment for pets can vary. Dogs that have not been vaccinated and cats that were exposed to a rabid animal are often euthanized immediately. Otherwise, the pet may be placed in strict isolation and observed for six months. Dogs and cats that receive a rabies vaccine are typically kept for ob-servation for 45 days. Animals with expired vaccinations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, according to the CDC. Rabies has been a problem for centuries. The term “ra-bies” is a Latin word meaning “madness or rage.” Rabies has been reported in historical documents since about 2300 B.C. Although cases of rabies infections acquired from dogs have been virtually eliminated, there is an increas-ing incidence of rabies in wild animals, and bats and rac-coons are particularly susceptible carriers. Rabid animals may be aggressive and drooling, but in many cases rabid animals are withdrawn, making it difficult to determine if you are face-to-face with a ra-bid animal. To play it safe, avoid contact with animals known to transmit rabies, particularly raccoons, which can be aggressive even if not afflicted. Dogs and cats should not be left unattended in a yard for extended periods of time. If a municipality issues warnings about increased rabies outbreaks in the area, take them seri-ously. Keep pets up-to-date on rabies vaccines, which remain the most effective preventative measure against the disease.
