For over 5 decades Flour Mills of Nigeria and its iconic Golden Penny brand have been part of the lives of Nigerians at home and abroad with an annual turnover of N309bn in 2014/15 and a workforce of over 13,000. The company’s vision is to be a premier food group in Africa; providing an ever expanding portfolio of high quality and affordable products to consumers in the most convenient ways; delivered currently through a range of world class flour, semolina, pasta, noodles, vegetable oil and margarine, rice and snack brands supported by the Golden Penny heritage and values.

Flour Mills is also increasing its focus on backward integration in the Agro Allied sector with investments being made in five agricultural value chain crops to support its sugar, rice, edible oil, cassava and animal feed interests. These plans are supported by the country’s largest agro-allied manufacturing, logistics and distribution network which manufactures and distributes inputs, such as seeds, fertilizer and storeage bags and offers farmers extension services while collecting and purchasing nearly 500,000 mt of grains and cereals annually through its agro-hub inland storeage and logistic network.

FMN also has a number of support businesses providing critically important packaging, transportation and logistics service to the whole group.

To produce and supply products of superior quality and value to the market thereby enriching the lives of consumers, customers, communities, employees and all stakeholders.

We care for the communities in which we live and work by tackling the social and nutritional issues that effect these communities. We work towards a better future by developing strong partnerships with individuals and organisations that can make a difference.

Social responsibility is expressed in many forms including the manufacture of high quality products, environmental protection, an effective corporate contributions programme and the voluntary activities of employees and retirees.

In developing their social investment strategies, FMN operates according to strict qualifying criteria.

- All projects should reflect the principles of FMN

- Projects must benefit either the community / group, employees or the company.

- Projects must be practical to implement, be financially viable and realized within a mutually acceptable time frame.

- Projects must be within agreed budgetary constraints.

- Sectarian or discriminatory projects such as cults that do not embrace an “all welcome” approach are not considered.

- The basic needs of communities and groups – food, shelter, education and skills for employment – are priority.

Project Criteria

Poor nutrition has had a dramatic impact on the fabric of Nigerian society, but it is inter-linked with other social problems that place severe strain on the social welfare infrastructure.

Addressing issues such as crime, poverty, homelessness and unemployment, the abuse of women and children, nutrition intervention, care for the aged, all form part of the company’s social welfare work. Activities are conducted in tandem with relevant business groupings, NGO’s and the communities where the company’s employees live and work.

FMN has projects across the country “we look at education institutions per community, we have given back a lot …. especially primary institutions, renovating their classrooms, making sure that we make the environment conducive for proper education” (*)(* Paul Gbededo, Group Managing Director – Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc)
