701 Center for Contemporary Art 701cca.org | [email protected] Center for Contemporary Art (701 CCA) is a visual art center that promotes understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of contemporary art, the creative process and the role of art and artists in the community. This non profit art center also encourages interaction between visual arts and other art forms.

701 CCA offers an Artist-in-residence (AIr) program in a 1,200 square-foot live/work unit on the second floor of 701 Whaley. Artists living at the center create new works while in residence. Generally, an exhibition or some public presentation of these works takes place during or shortly after the residency.

This process, at times a struggle, but more often a series of actions, proves to me again and again this thing called “painting” is a most precious blessing. Inevitably, the forms revealed are figures, owing to a prejudice on my part. The figures (are) less representational and more reflective of psychological and emotional states. My concerns are largely with formal elements – movement, balance, color and tonal harmony (or dissonance), texture, etc.

Since returning to Columbia 5 years ago after teaching art in public & private schools for 20 years, I have been taking classes at uSC, learning new, creative techniques and working on the small press I was able to buy for my studio. While teaching, I did many commissioned portraits, so faces often find their way into my prints.

FROM THE ARTiST’S STATEMENTI am a Mockingbird. I sing many different songs when it comes to visual expression. I work in watercolor, mixed media & photography. My long career in graphic design informs my work with the use of type & handwriting. Sometimes, my mixed media takes the form of a hand-made book. I am intrigued with finding the inherent beauty in the ordinary & the mundane. I utilize found objects--natural or man-made--such as leaves, mica, and old bottle caps because I like their textures & vibrations.

Trained in Old Master techniques in Florence, Italy, I work primarily in oils, specializing in portrait, figurative & still life paintings. The human spirit & the natural world inspire my art. I view outward appearances--faces, posture, expression, texture, lights, darks, color--as reflections of the inner spirit & strive in my paintings to reflect the essence of the person or object that makes it unique.

FROM THE ARTiST’S STATEMENTI have been painting for 25 years. My medium is not always canvas; I am challenged by painting unusual art on usual spaces/things or vice versa. I have usually painted custom pieces, murals, furniture, both for children and adults. My work has been at devine Foods, a mural outside brantley Manor, and doing stage sets for the Columbia Classical ballet at Koger Center.

There is a sense of fragility to these landscapes that comes both from the play of natural forces and the threatened encroachment of human “development.” during regular walks and paddling trips into these areas, I make source materials--sketches and photographs--that respond to the light, atmosphere, weather and passage of time.

As the art is viewed, my hope is that one’s burden is lifted, a memory is rekindled, or someone is spurred to action. In 2005, I was honored along with about forty Lexington County Artists to have been selected to show a piece of my work, “Wind in her hair.” I have been awarded a number of Artist in residences in our beautiful State parks and published in The Lexington Chronicle and Mid-Carolina Magazine.

Adding another dimension to the work, they are illuminated from within. The element of light heightens the emotional impact on the viewer. Simultaneously, the bullet holes reveal a new textural quality to the surface demonstrating that when human emotion appears, the most irrational there is underlying truth.

Working on location allows me to capture the feel & shapes of the place, but I apply personal color choices, using pairs of complements for visual vibration & leaving bits of the red showing through areas of cool blues & greens. In the studio, I use outdoor paintings & photos as reference for larger pieces, experimenting with acrylic paints & mediums while retaining an emotional connection to the landscape.

As we sat by the river watching for the bob to move Mrs. Ayers said to me, “A human being can make something from nothing. As a human being we are charged with creation, so create.” She carefully places a small turtle she made from clay into my hand and asks me to make one just like it. She hands me a small clump of clay, and my life as an artist began.

FROM THE ARTiST’S STATEMENTI am currently working on two series of sculptures, “Animals within nature” (animals are characters in a narrative of ancient mythology, fairy tales or dreams) and “Food as Symbols” (food is more then just to be consumed; it can hold meaning--I research the historical, cultural or emotional connection of food). These sculptures are larger then life to enhance their abstract and surreal nature. Art, for me, is more then the making of objects; it is the searching and learning that holds my interest.

I also do work with the human figure--faces, hands and torsos which are a neo-tribal synthesis of ancient motifs. My work has been featured in shows in rock hill, Anderson, Columbia, Charleston & beaufort, SC as well as new york City. I taught Art in the Lowcountry public Schools and private lessons at Island Girl Studio. After a diagnosis of MS, I retired, then relocated to Columbia. I have participated in regional festivals, shows and exhibits, including Spoleto.

Of inner wisdom?) is a frequent, always unintentional symbol. As for many artists, the process of creation for me is spiritual.
