The Giza Necropoli

s is an archaeological site

on the Giza

Plateau, on the

outskirts of Cair, Egypt.

It is the oldest of the

ancient Wonders and

the only one still

in existenc

e.

The sculptor Hares was creating Colossus for 12 years. Colossus of Rhodes stood on a white marble pedestal, slightly leaning back. A

statue of the god rose at the entrance to the harbour of Rhodes, and was

visible from nearby islands.

The Colossus stood for sixty-five years. In 222

BC. the earthquake destroyed the statue.

In November 2008 it was announced about the reconstruction of the statues in the form of lighting installations.

The construction of the amphitheater

was started by Emperor Vespasian, after his victories in

Asia in 72 AD.

COLOSSEUM

In the year of 405 AD The

Colosseum had fallen into

disrepair and was destroyed before 1740.

It is an interesting fact that in the Colosseum the

shooting battles of Bruce Lee and

Chuck Norris from the movie "The Return of the

Dragon“ took place.

The city of ancient America is located in Peru, at the top of the ridge at an altitude of

2450 meters.

There is some controversy as to

whether the Hanging Gardens

were an actual construction or a poetic creation,

owing to the lack of documents in

modern Babylonian sources.

There is only a mention of

Nebuchadnezzar’s wife Amyitis about Hanging Gardens.

However, it is possible that

cuneiform texts on the Hanging Gardens

may yet be found.

Today archaeological evidence hasn't been found at Babylon for

the Hanging Gardens. It is

possible that this evidence exists

beneath the Euphrates, which

cannot be excavated safely at present.

The river flowed east of its current

position during the time of

Nebuchadnezzar II, and therefore little is known

about the western portion of Babylon.

Modern scientists believe that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were actually constructed

by the Assyrian king Sennacherib for his palace at Nineveh.

Was built between 280 and 247 BC on the island of Pharos at Alexandria

in Egypt. Its purpose was to guide sailors into the harbour at night. Its height was 450 meters.

By the XII century Alexandrian harbour silted up, the ships

could not use it. The lighthouse went into

decline.

In the XIV century, the

lighthouse was destroyed by an

earthquake.

In the V century BC.

the citizens of Olympia

decided to build the temple of Zeus. The majestic

building was errected

between 466 and 456 years BC It was built of huge stone blocks, and

surrounded by massive columns.

The architect Phidias was

sculpting the statue of

Zeus in the temple for 21 years. It was beautiful &

magnificent. It was made

of gold, diamonds

and emeralds!

The Earthquake destroyed the statue almost completely in the II century BC.

The temple was built in the middle of the VI century BC. A statue of the goddess Artemis was made of gold

and ivory.

The temple was a financial and business centre

of Ephesus.

But in 356 BC. Herostratus burnt

the temple, wishing to become famous

such a way.

The Monument of carian ruler Mausolus. Artemisia II ordered

to build it in the middle of the IV

century BC in Halicarnassus.

The Mausoleum was constructed by the

great Greek architects, such as

Satyr, Pytheas, Leohar, Scopas, Timotheus and

Briaksid.

In the XIII century the mausoleum was destroyed by an

earthquake.

In 1846 the expedition of the British Museum explored the ruins.

The construction of the first wall began in the III

century BCThe length of

the wall is 9800 kilometers long .

The wall was built to protect China's

borders from attacks of

the barbarians

Until the 20th century the wall was gradually being

destroyed by sandstorms.However, on June 25, 1899

there appeared a rumour about demolition of the Great Wall of China in American newspapers.

After this event the reconstruction of the wall

began.

There is a legend that the foundation of the walls was

made of a mixture of builders’ bodies and rice porridge with a mixture of

slaked lime.

Petra was an ancient city, the

capital of Idumea, and

later the capital of the

Nabataean kingdom. Located in

Jordan.

Petra was located at the crossroads of the

two major trade routes. Hundreds of

years of trade brought great wealth

to Petra.

But when the Romans discovered the sea routes to the East,

overland spice trade came to naught, and Petra was gradually exhausted, lost in the

sands.

Taj Mahal is a mausoleum-

mosque, located in Agra, India, on the banks of the river Yamuna.

Built on the order of Mughal

emperor Shah Jahan in the

memory of his wife Mumtaz

Mahal, who died in child-birth.

Taj Mahal is considered to be the best example

of Mughal architecture style,

which combines the elements of Persian, Indian

and Islamic architectural

styles.

In 1983, the Taj Mahal was named a «pearl of Muslim art in India, one of the

recognized masterpieces of

heritage, which is admired throughout

the world» by UNESCO.

Chichen Itza was a political and cultural centre of the Maya in

the north of the Yucatan Peninsula

(Mexico).

The holy city of the itza people is located 120

kilometers east of the city of Merida.

The city was founded in the VII century AD.

At the time of the Spanish conquest of Chichen Itza it was a

ruin. The remains of the city can be divided into two

groups. The first includes

buildings, dating from the VI-VII centuries and relating to the period of

Mayan culture. The second group of

buildings relates to the period of Toltec X-XI

centuries.

The Statue of Christ the

Redeemer is the famous statue of

Christ with outstretched

arms at the top of Corcovado

mountain in Rio de Janeiro. It is a symbol of Rio de

Janeiro and Brazil. The

statue is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone.

In 1921 the approaching centenary of national independence inspired Brazil's city fathers to build a monument of Christ the

Redeemer. The magazine "O Cruzeiro" announced a fundraiser for a subscription to the construction of the monument. As a

result of the campaign there were collected 2.2 million reals.

The construction of the statue went on for about nine years - from 1922 to 1931.

October 12, 1931 is the date of the grand opening and consecration of the

monument
