If your Windows 10 computer doesn’t work the way it should be working or not even booting, then you have to use a recovery tool to restore your system back to working condition.

The problem can arise after installing a program, driver or Windows update.

Other reasons can be a system crash due to a sudden power cut or any other activity.

They start trying everything that comes to their mind. But a wrong step can lead to huge data loss.

Use Advanced Startup to perform Diagnosis

Advanced Startup

Booting into Advanced Startup Options gives you access to Automatic Repair and Windows Startup Settings tools.

To boot into Advanced Startup do the following.

Open your PC and Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and click Restart now button.

Select Troubleshoot on Choose an option screen.

Select Advanced Options

Automatic Repair

If the Windows is not loading properly or it hangs on loading screen then do the following.

Select Automatic Repair to start System Diagnosis.

It automatically search for the issues and fix them.

The PC will Restart several times during the process.

If it doesn’t fix the problem, move to the next one.

Windows Startup Settings

If the problem started after installing a new program, update or driver then do the following.

Select Windows Startup Settings.

Read the available boot menu options and click Restart.

Select a Windows startup mode

Key to Press ModeEnter Normal Mode (default)4 or F4 Safe Mode5 or F5 Safe Mode with Networking

6 or F6 Safe Mode with Command Prompt

There will be more options, use the key indicated to select them.

If PC loads without an issue in safe mode then it is a program, update or a driver causing the issue.

In such case, uninstall the latest Windows update and reboot the system.

If it is still not working properly, follow the same instructions and this time uninstall the driver your installed after which the problem occurred if any or uninstall a program that you updated or installed earlier.

Reboot the system and see if the problem is resolved.

If the issue still remains, move to the next step.

Restore from a System Restore Point

System Restore Point

A System Restore Point reverse the changes made to Windows files and settings back to the time when the restore point was created.

To use it, Go to Control panel > Recovery > Open system restore.

A new Wizard will open.

Click Next and select a restore point.

Click Finish to Start the process.

3 Restore from a System Image

System Image Recovery

In Windows 10 there is no way to restore from a system image directly on desktop.

Connect the drive containing system image to your PC.

Boot the PC into Advanced Startup either from settings or using a recovery drive or Windows 10 installation media.

Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options and select System Image Recovery.

Note: Changes made in system after creating the system image will not be restored.

It will open System Reimage Wizard.

Follow the instruction to complete the step.

It will take a longer time about 1-2 hours.

When it is completed all your data and Windows will be restore from the Image.

Till then you can do some other work.

4 Restore or set using a Recovery drive

Recovery Drive

If you have already made a Windows 10 Recovery drive ready for dealing with such situation then do the following to use it.

Connect the USB Recovery drive and boot from it.

Generally, Windows automatically boot from a recovery drive if it is connected to the system.

If not then force it to do so by entering boot from bios setting.

When system boots from Recovery drive, select Troubleshoot.

Choose Reset this PC to reinstall Windows without affecting personal files or choose recover from a drive to restore Windows from the Recovery drive.

5 Reset your PC

Reset this PC

Reset this PC reinstalls Windows with or without affecting your personal files depending on your choice.

To use this tool, Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC.

Select an option from:

Keep my files – To secure your personal files.

Remove everything – To delete all your data and apps.

Select option and click Reset to start the process. It will take more than 1 hour.

6 Use Windows Install DVD or USB

Use Windows 10 Installation media

If your PC is not booting and you don’t have a recovery drive then use Windows installation USB or DVD drive.

A install DVD or USB can be created with Media Creation tool using another PC.

It not only comes in use to install Windows but also to repair it anytime.

For this, boot your system from the install media.

Select your language and other preferences.

Click Next.

Select Repair your computer.

Then select Troubleshoot.

Finally, select Reset your PC to perform a reset or select Advanced options to try other available options.

Go back to the previous build

This option in Advances Startup options let you go back to the previous version of Windows from which you have upgraded.

The option will be available only if

Only within a month.

Windows.old folder exists in C drive.

Upgrade files are still in C drive.

To use this tool, boot into Advanced startup options.

Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced option > Go back to the previous build.
