Look for a switch on the side. Most memory cards and some USB drives have atiny switch or tab that can be toggled in two positions. If you find one, move it to the

position labeled "Unlock." If it isn't labeled, this is the position closest to the front of thecard. Be careful not to jostle the switch when you put your device back into thecomputer. If your device does not have a switch, move on to the next step.

If you are using a card adapter, there may be a second switch on the adapteritself.Some built­in MacBook Pro card reader slots will sometimes shove the switchas you insert it. Try moving the memory card switch halfway between the twopositions, and inserting gently.[1] Try this only if both other positions don't work.

2 Change the sharing permissions. Some devices, but not all, will let you changethe sharing permissions even if write protection is enabled. If you are using a

Windows computer, right click the device icon and select  Share  →  AdvancedSettings  →  Permissions . Check the "full control" box, and select  OK .

If the error message you get tells you the file is write­protected, not the drive ormemory card, skip to the section on disabling write protection for files instead.

3 Try a different adapter for memory cards. If you are using the wrong type ofadapter, such as an SDHC adapter for an SD card or microSD card, you can

sometimes read files but not modify them. Check your adapter's specifications and theexact text on your memory card, and try to find an adapter made specifically for that typeof card.

If you are using a computer's built­in card reading slot, it might be worth trying aplug­in card reader, especially if the built­in slot feels loose or hard to fit.

1 Enter "cmd" in the Start menu. To access the command line in Windows, openthe Start menu and type cmd in the search field. Press  Enter , and a command

window should pop up.

The command line does not use your cursor. Just type, and use "delete" or thearrow keys on your keyboard to move back to correct a mistake.

2 Enter "diskpart" in the new window. In the command line window, type diskpartand press  Enter . This will give you access to the diskpart utility inside this same

command line window.

3 Enter "list disk." Type list disk and hit  Enter . This will list all disks accessibleon your computer, include the USB Drive or memory card. If you don't know which

drive listed is the write­protected device, find the icon of the device in your My Computerfolder and note its name before you continue.

You can also identify the device by ejecting it, typing "list disk" again, andseeing which disk disappeared.If your device does not appear, try "list volume" instead. In this case, you'll needto replace the commands below with "volume" wherever they use "disk."

4 Select the disk. Once you're sure which disk is yours, type select disk X,replacing X with the number of the disk. (For example, type select disk 2 if disk 2

is the write­protected device.)

5 Type "attributes disk clear readonly" and press enter. The commandattributes disk clear readonly should remove any write protection on the disk if it

exists.

Type the command exactly as shown. "readonly" is one word.If this still doesn't work, try adjusting the registry using the instructions below.

1 Understand the risks. Windows operating systems have a "registry" whichcontains a great deal of important information. An error here could be making all

memory cards and USB drives read­only. While the steps below will safely locate andcorrect this problem if present, do not change any other settings inside the registryeditor, or you could make your operating system unusable.

Backing up your registry is recommended before editing it.

2 Open the registry editor. You can access the registry editor by enteringregedit  into the Search field in your Start menu. Windows 8 users can type

until you find the StorageDevicePolicies folder. If this folder does not exist, see thenext step.

5 Create the StorageDevicePolicies folder if it doesn’t exist. If you cannot findthe StorageDevicePolicies folder, then you will need to create one before

continuing. Right­click in the blank space in the Control folder. Select New, and thenKey. Label it  StorageDevicePolicies  without spaces, exactly as shown here.

6 Change or create the "WriteProtect" entry to 0. Double click on the"WriteProtect" key in the StorageDevicePolicies folder. Change the “Value

data” field from  1  to  0 . Press  OK . If you created a new StorageDevicePoliciesfolder, follow these steps instead:

Open the new StorageDevicePolicies folder, then right­click in a blankspace. Select New, and then DWORD (32­bit) value. Name the new fileWriteProtect . Double­click WriteProtect to open it, and put  0  in thevalue field. Press  OK .You must type each entry exactly, including capitalization, otherwise the key willnot work.

Reboot your computer. In order for the registry changes to take effect, you willneed to reboot your computer. Save all of your work before rebooting.

1 Open Disk Utility. On Mac OS X, this should be located in Applications → Utilities → Disk Utility. If it's not there, search for it using the Spotlight search bar.

2 Select the write­protected device on the left. The Disk Utility window should listyour hard drive, CD drive, and any attached devices. Select the write­protected

1 Know that this will clear all data from the device. When you "format" a device,all data is destroyed and the device is completely reconfigured. You will end up

with a completely empty device, with no photographs or other information, but thisshould also reset write protection.

If your device contains files, try every other applicable method before you resortto this one.

2 Remove all other storage devices. Remove all other insertable storage devicesbefore you begin, to avoid accidentally deleting files. Move on to the method below

that matches your operating system. When it comes time to select the device, triple­check your choice before you complete the formatting.

3 Format a device on a Windows computer. Open "My Computer," the insert yourdevice. When the icon for your memory card or USB drive appears, right click it

and select "Format." Click "OK" and wait for it to format, which should complete within afew minutes at most.

There may be a drop­down list of options to choose from, under "File System."For most purposes, FAT32 is the option you want, and should already beselected.If the format option does not appear, try again on an administrator account, orskip to the last step in this section for an alternate method.

Write protection errors often occur because the USB drive is failingmechanically. If this is the case, you will need to get a new USB drive.

If the lock switch of a memory card has broken off, you can use a smallpiece of cellophane tape to make the card writable. Cover theindentation where the lock switch is normally located with a smallsquare of tape. Don't cover any of the card's contacts with the tape,and make sure the tape is completely flat.
