Viruses, Bacteria, Protists and Fungi

What are they?• Viruses are tiny non-living particles that invade and then

multiply inside of a living cell.• Bacteria are members of a large group of unicellular

microorganisms (prokaryotes)lacking organelles and an organized nucleus, including some that can cause disease.

• Protists are eukaryotes that cannot be classified as plants, animals or fungi

• Fungi are eukaryotes that have cell walls, are heterotrophs that feed by absorbing their food and use spores to reproduce,

Part 1 - Choose One of Each

• Choose a virus, bacteria, protist, and fungi. Identify your choices with both the scientific name and common name.

• Provide the following information:– How does it move?– How does it reproduce?– How does it get its food?– How does it grow?

Part 2 - Make a Model

• Make a model of each using materials that you have around the house or that I have in the classroom.– The model can be as large or as small as you would

like. However, you must indicate the actual size of the virus or organism.

– The model should include all of the parts of the virus or organism

– Draw a cross section showing what would be found on the inside of the virus, bacteria, protist, and fungi.

Part 3 - Compare and Contrast

• How are the virus, bacteria, protist, and fungi that you chose similar and different?

• Things to consider:– Are they all living?– To they make their own food, feed off of others,

absorb their food?– Are they alike structurally?– What do they use to move?You only have to compare and contrast your choices!
