Aptitude, Attitude, and Altitude

Aptitude is great—but without a positive attitude, you won’t reach your potential career altitude

Attitudes influence behavior

Behavior influences attitude

Ability to act on your own—the ability to take action, complete tasks and make decisions without the help or advice of other people. Taking an introductory (first) step.

Types of people: People who “do” without being told

People who “do” when told

People who “do” when told more than once

People who don’t “do”, even when told more than once

Which kind of person do YOU want to be?

Why don’t some people take initiative?

2. Initiative

• If you have a passion for something, you love doing it.

• Passion is boundless enthusiasm

> Good teachers have a passion for teaching

> Good students have a passion for learning

> If you want to be good at something, you have to do it with passion

• Passion creates excitement, it makes people around you better

• Something you would do for no or little money—

> “I can’t believe they are paying me for this”

Do YOU have passion?

What are YOU passionate about?

How will I (others) know?

• In today's rapidly changing economy, the key to success is not what you know, but how fast you can learn.

4. Continuous Learning

• How can you tell if someone is a good and fast learner?

> Show curiosity by asking lots of questions—What, Where, When, Why, How?

> Other behaviors?

• Your ability to apply analytical and logical thinking to gather and analyze information, find the root cause of a problem, design and test solutions to problems, evaluate alternative courses of actions and formulate plans.

• Analytical Processes and Patterns

> Situational Appraisal—Where am I?

> Problem Solving—Looking Back and Finding Cause

> Decision Making—Present Day and Choosing Among Alternatives

> Risk Analysis and Forecasting—Future Focus and Planning

• Effective Communications—the ability to send (communicate) a message through a specific medium so that it is received and acted upon in the way that you intended.

> Face-to-Face

> Phone (virtual)

> E-mail

Western Style Communication Expectations:

• Don’t say “yes or OK” if you don’t really understand what the other side saying.

• Please be brave and express concerns if you don’t think you can meet your manager’s timetable for completion of a task. By keeping silent, it means you agree or are committed to the task, hence your manager is expecting it to get done.

• Inform your direct manager the bad news at the time point, don’t hide issues. Telling bad news is more important than telling good news.
