Dear Participant, We are greatly honored to have you with us once again in the 6th WSEAS Multiconference CSCC. This year our multiconference is organized again in Crete. Crete is the island of surprises and contrasts. High mountains and deep gorges, archaeological sites alongside traditional villages where life continues in a relaxed and friendly way, clear blue seas bordered by golden sandy beaches. Here, in the crossroad of the three ancient Continents, Zeus, the king of Greek gods, was born. Crete, in the minoan era, gave birth to the first civilization in the west-european sense (anthropocentric, in contradistinction of the eastern theocratic civilizations) and also here, the Apostle Paul was shipwrecked off in what is today known as Kali Limenes (="Good Ports"). The geographical position of Crete attracted the attention of many conquerors, such as Romans, Arabs, Crusaders, Venetians, Ottomans and Nazis, and the epic defense of the island against the Ottoman Empire for 26 years as well as the legendary defense during the second world war, May 1941 (known today as the "Battle of Crete") are admirable examples of the indomitable Cretan soul! Many famous politicians and artists such as Eleftherios Venizelos (the Father of modern Greece), El-Greco, Nikos Kazantzakis (philosopher and litterateur), Vitsentzos Kornaros (the Homer of Modern Greece) and Odysseus Elytis (Nobel in Literature, 1979) were also born in Crete. Organizing this event since 1996 and creating the tradition of simultaneous publication of all the accepted papers in the Conference Proceedings as well as in the Post-Conference Books or WSEAS Journals, I wish to thank, each of you for your participation and your contribution. In your conference bag, you can find the following material:

• Conference Proceedings (CD-ROM) • Two volume of WSEAS-Press International Editions • Two Issues of WSEAS Transactions • Certification of attendance • Notebook and pen • Name Card • A coupon for our Welcome Drink • A coupon for our Banquet • T-Shirt from WSEAS

Thank you very much. Prof. N.E. Mastorakis General Chairman

Network intrusion detection: A statistical anomaly approach

Prof. CONSTANTINE MANIKOPOULOS

New Jersey Center for Wireless Networking with Internet Security (NJWINS) ECE Department, New Jersey Inst. of Tech., University Heights, Newark, NJ 07102,USA

E-mail: [email protected]

Abstract: The talk will discuss statistical anomaly approaches to network intrusion detection as contrasted to the traditional signature based systems that appear commercially. Anomaly type detection promises to detect novel attacks while signature systems cannot. After a general introduction to intrusion detection that reviews its history, the various types and current capabilities, I will discuss the statistical anomaly detection technology that our laboratory has developed to support the prototype

Hierarchical Intrusion Detection Engine (HIDE) system for the US Army’s Tactical Internet. HIDE is a hierarchical, multi-tier, multi-observation-window anomaly based network intrusion detection system. This technology can be applied in host intrusion detection as well. Although most of the work in the field to date has focused on wired networks, I will also discuss the issues, challenges and propose solutions to intrusion detection in the more vulnerable wireless networks and in particular the mobile ad-hoc networks. 10:30-11:30: Plenary Lecture II

Carrier Excitation and Escape from Quantum Traps, In Multilayered Nanostructures

Prof. ARGYRIOS C. VARONIDES

Physics and Electrical Engineering Department, University of Scranton, Scranton PA 18510, USA

[email protected] Abstract: Multilayered semi-conducting nanostructures and devices are the results of technological extremes that force them to behave (a) faster (b) more efficiently (c) and quantum mechanically. The talk will stress the necessity of quantum size effects for better (semiconducting) device performance and will outline tunneling techniques for an understanding of superconducting Josephson-like (normal-insulator-superconducting) junctions of thin Yttrium-Barium-Copper-Oxide (YBCO) films. Nanostructures are regimes where electrons operate as solutions of the Schrodinger’s equation (hence as waves) rather, than as simple charged carriers. In this level, two fundamental electronic excitations occur via (i) tunneling and (ii) thermal escape. In the first case, electrons are trapped in quantum wells and then forced to tunnel through the growth direction of the device. In the latter case, electrons gain sufficient energy from incident radiation, so that they are capable of thermally escaping from quantum traps and become conduction electrons, thus increasing conductivity. 11:30-12:00: Coffee-Break 12:00-13:00: Plenary Lecture III

Systematic Hierarchical Segmentation of Mammograms

Prof. R. CHANDRASEKHAR Australian Research Centre for Medical Engineering (ARCME)

The University of Western Australia, AUSTRALIA Abstract: Breast cancer is the most frequently occurring cancer in females with no cure at present. Early detection offers the best chance of survival and mammography is used to screen the asymptomatic female population above fifty years of age. Computerized analysis of mammograms can assist radiologists to detect lesions or abnormalities.

Page 5: 6th WSEAS International Multiconference on Circuits ...wseas.us/e-library/conferences/crete2002/program.pdf · Odysseus Elytis (Nobel in Literature, 1979) were also born in Crete

However, the entire digitized mammogram must first be segmented and analyzed prior to lesion detection. In this seminar, a summary will presented of the work done at the Australian Research Centre for Medical Engineering (ARCME) to systematically and hierarchically segment mammograms, as a precursor to lesion detection. The breast is first segmented from the non-breast background by polynomial modelling and subtraction of the latter region. The nipple, which is the only anatomical landmark, is then located using a sensitive feature set to search the breast border. The pectoral muscle margin is identified next by an adaptive edge detection/surface fitting algorithm. Results from these algorithms are then combined to automatically assess the adequacy and quality of any mammogram, prior to further analysis by computer. Finally, a systematic methodology is proposed for lesion search. 16:00-17:00: Plenary Lecture IV

Computation of Brunovsky Stratification of linear systems under feedback equivalence

Prof. MARIA ISABEL GARCIA-PLANAS

Departament de Matematica Aplicada I Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya

C. Mineria 1, Esc C, 1º - 3ª, 08038 Barcelona, SPAIN

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: It is well know that computing the fine canonical structure elements of pairs of matrices (A,B) in M_{n}(C)x M_{n xm}(C) corresponding to the linear multivariable dynamical systems dx=Ax+Bu under feedback equivalence are ill-posed problem because of arbitrary small perturbations in the entries may drastically change the canonical structure. One of the underlying theories to study tools for computing the qualitative information for linear systems is to stratify the space of pairs of matrices under discrete invariants, because it reveals the complete hierarchy of nearby structures. We present the study of the stratification in order to apply it to construction of algorithms for computing the stratification of space of linear systems. 17:00-17:30: Coffee-Break 17:30-18:30: Plenary Lecture V

Constraint Programming: In Pursuit of the Holy Grail

Prof. ROMAN BARTAK Charles University, Malostranske namesti 2/25,

118 00 Prague 1, CZECH REPUBLIC Abstract: Many current problems in areas like planning, scheduling, allocation, configuration etc. have the nature of combinatorial optimisation. It means that combining

known elements like in the puzzle gets the solution. Constraint programming is a technology for modelling and solving combinatorial problems by stating constraints over the problem variables. The idea is that the user just describes the problem in a declarative way and the underlying solver finds a solution satisfying all the constraints. In the talk we present a technology behind constraint programming and we give some examples of practical applications. Excursions of Monday (for accompanying persons) Samaria Gorge – Long Way (Duration 12 hours) 21.00 EUR.
