During the race, a riot broke out between the groups and burst into the streets, becoming a full scale rebellion. Most of the city was destroyed, and Justinian I was left to rebuild the city.

Justinian built new bridges, public baths, parks, roads, and hospitals. He also built spectacular churches, such as Hagia Sophia. The Hagia Sophia's simple base represents the earthly world, and the dome represents the “dome of heaven”. This church is one of the most famous buildings in the world.

Justinian's Code affected the modern world because it has become the basis of many legal codes for the western world. Justinian's code was made from the thousands of laws from the Roman Empire. A committee under Justinian's direction revised outdated confusing Roman laws.

The code also gave new rights to women. For instance, women could now inherit property.
