Why was Constantinople ideally located to be the capital of the Byzantine Empire?

Constantinople was well defended from the Byzantine enemies. It was surrounded by three water masses that helped defend the capital and also was good for trade. Constantinople’s location made it easy to defend and was good for trade routes linking east to west.

What were some of Constantinople’s main features?

Constantinople was surrounded on three sides by water and was easy to defend by land and sea. Trade was very big and docks were always busy. Most people were rich in Constantinople.

What was daily life like in Constantinople?

Most people attended chariot races when they were held. Despite the luxuries of the rich, many people lived in poverty. Life in Constantinople was more advanced than western Europe.

1. What event forced Justinian to start rebuilding parts of Constantinople?

The event was a riot at a chariot race Justinian was attending. There was a long-lasting controversy between the Blues and the Greens, supporters of different chariots. During the race, a riot broke out between the groups and burst into the streets, becoming a full scale rebellion. Most of the city was destroyed, and Justinian I was left to rebuild the city.

2. What were some of the improvements made to Constantinople as a result of Justinian’s public work projects?

Justinian built new bridges, public baths, parks, roads, and hospitals. He also built spectacular churches, such as Hagia Sophia. The Hagia Sophia's simple base represents the earthly world, and the dome represents the “dome of heaven”. This church is one of the most famous buildings in the world.

The public works also gave the many poor people jobs to do because they couldn't find work elsewhere.

3. How has Justinian's Code affected the modern world?

Justinian's Code affected the modern world because it has become the basis of many legal codes for the western world. Justinian's code was made from the thousands of laws from the Roman Empire. A committee under Justinian's direction revised outdated confusing Roman laws.

The code also gave new rights to women. For instance, women could now inherit property.

The Byzantine Empire was based on religion. It was the foundation of the religion. When they made there empire capital they intended for it to be a religious center.
