we have been privileged to

welcome and fellowship

They have been part of the

Elim family during their

At one time, flags of many

nations were displayed in

the auditorium.

The building, as a community venue has hosts many different groups, activities and events. These have included LINK (ESOL) classes, Toastmasters, Sit and Be Fit , Creative Capers, Mainly Music, Guitar lessons, St Johns, Girl Guides, Star Jam, and as a polling booth in election years. Radio Rhema, World Vision, Tear Fund, Alpha, visiting guest speakers, entertainers, community days, Just for Her events, Open Air Campaigners, PARS, Prison Fellowship, . Kingdom Resources. Bible in Schools, Womens Aglow. Promise Keepers. Burnside Community Transformation Trust, Parenting Week, and The Parenting Place. Grahams Road Bible School started in 1987, under the leadership of Ken Legg and then directed by Mike Butler, with classes held in the church and by correspondence. This was a forerunner of Elim Ministry Training School.

In October , a team will visit PNG to attend and be a part of the 2016 Graduation Ceremony.

There are plans for a Childrens’ Camp and to teach the children and adults ukulele.

MISSIONS Together with other Elim churches, Burnside has supported Elizabeth Hutton in the establishment and development of a Bible School and Training facility in Goroka for indigenous church workers. Elizabeth is now part of the Burnside church family. The goal is to gift 30 ukuleles for children and teachers to use.

We are privileged to partner with Roger and Nausica de Gracia, Pastors in the Zambales Province in the Philippines, to build a two story building which will enhance their capacity to train church workers in the region. In conjunction with St Timothy’s Anglican Church, Burnside Community Transformation Trust (BCTT) was formed. Funding from Fendlaton/Waimari Community Board for the 24/7 Youth Workers at Burnside High School is administered via BCTT.

As well as ministry training the church is active in the community and runs a feeding programme for needy children.

THE CHURCH BUILDING

The section on Grahams Road was purchased in the late 1950’s for 700 pounds. On 22nd June 1964, the Waimairi County Council approved the proposal to erect a church on the Grahams Road section. It was a basic building, 60 foot by 30 foot, walls, win-dows and door and a roof. The church was dedicated to the glory of God on July 10

th 1965.

In 1972, space began to become a real concern, particularly for the Sunday School. Extensions to the church building were planned in the form of a minor hall, primarily for Sunday School and youth activities.

Work finally commenced on the foundations in February 1982

In October 82, Ken Legg felt the Lord spoke clearly “that we were to take a step of faith and bring on Jim Reeves as a full-time paid builder. Within a week, obvious progress was being made and the work continued at a faster rate. The opening date was set for Saturday 26th February 1983 and plans included special invitations and afternoon tea at Kendal School Hall.

In May 1974, the council issued the building permit with a few minor changes to the plans.

At the AGM in September 1975 Pastor Dunk reported “.... The completion of the new extensions did not signify that we had ‘arrived’…..

In 1980 the house at 195 Grahams Road was purchased.

The plan was now to sell it and remove it from the section to make space for the new auditorium that was planned as an extension to the church.

The house was sold in 1981, making way for the new building.

As years passed, the church continued to grow and in 1987, the minutes recorded an interest in purchasing 6 Cranbrook Ave for added space. At the same time, they took occupancy of offices on Sheffield Crescent and started holding multiple services on Sundays. The church considered selling the Grahams Road complex. Pastor Legg reported that the Faith Family Fellowship were very interested in buying the site. In late 1988, the church decided against selling the property. Minutes recorded in April 1989 reported that “The church is near its maximum fire safety limit ie 280, averaging 260.” Over the next two years, the church looked at expanding its existing facilities by adding an upstairs above the foyer or Sunday School hall. However, in 1991, the decision was made to merge with City Elim and the Grahams Road Church was closed for six months. The church re-opened in June 1992 and space was no longer a pressing issue. In October 1992, 6 Cranbrook Avenue was purchased. Pastors Les and Isabel Covic moved in with their daughter, Angela.

As well as serving as their home, the house was used for various meetings, Sunday School classes and hosting visiting speakers. In his report for 1997, Les Covic called it a year of challenges and possibilities. “We commenced the year with a promise from the Word of God. Isaiah 54: 2-3

Work commenced in March 1998, as planned, and was completed in May the same year. Graeme Flett, who became pastor in January 1998 prior to the crèche extensions, desired to alter the auditorium floor for several years before it actually happened. “I had the vision to level the floor as it would give greater flexibility in how the building could be used. The church wants to serve the community. The building is not just for worshipping on Sundays but for a whole range of community activities.”

In the early 50s, the NZ Pentecostal Church invited the Elim movement in the UK to take over their churches and Pastor Gilbert and Mrs Irene Dunk with their two boys, Michael and Philip, arrived in Wellington in 1952. At this stage there were only two churches – Wellington and Blenheim. In 1956 Pastor Dunk came down from Wellington and helped to start a church in Christchurch. He held special meetings in the Civic Theatre and then meetings in various halls. The church was established initially in the Oddfellow’s Hall at 20 Canon Street. The minutes of the first business meeting of Elim church in Christchurch were recorded by hand in a school exercise book on the 18th June 1956. This is the first entry: “First Business Meet-ing of the Elim Church in Christchurch held on the 18th June 1956 at the home of Brother and Sister Jenkins at 30 Lin-wood Ave, Christchurch.” Murray Jenkins had been chosen as the first pastor of the church and at the meeting, J Hood was elect-ed treasurer and Ken Hibbert was made secretary. Matters discussed included the purchase of 100 chorus books, an upcoming Campaign and Brother Jenkin’s salary.

Pastor Andrew and Lynley Garratt came to Burnside Elim in February 2011 in the midst of severe earthquakes. The congregation has adapted and changed as the city is rebuilt.

Upgrades continue today to make the buildings a place that will serve the growing needs of the church family and community. The church has been and will continue to be a hub of the community.
