6 Tips to Teach Your Kids How to Brush Their Teeth

Eating vegetables and taking a bath are some of the activities that children don’t like. The same thing with brushing, it is something that is usually unwelcome by kids. More often than not, it is met with too much resistance. However, brushing the teeth is among the most important things that can help kids fight tooth decay and live a life with a healthy mouth. For parents, it’s indeed a challenging task to encourage children to brush their teeth. And in doing so, it’s important to foster a good behavior and make them think that it’s a fun activity and not a chore. The following are some of the most effective tips to make children enjoy every brushing activity.

Tips to Make Kids Brush their Teeth

1. Good story telling

You can tell stories about the importance of brushing. Use their favorite cartoon characters. Narrate to them that the sugar bugs will make holes in the teeth if they don’t brush. Sometimes, it only takes a good story to encourage them.

2. Show and Tell

If the story is not convincing enough, you can use a dissolving agent to show them how a plaque on the teeth looks like. Let them chew and the pink will show them the plaque so they will see the difference of brushing.

3. Brush like a train wheel

It is also recommended to liken brushing to a train wheel. Make them imagine the wheels of a train for them to brush properly. They need to create big circles, round and round instead of scrubbing.

4. Make Bubbles

Encourage the kids to create lots and lots of bubbles. If they can do so, it would mean that they are brushing well. If you have more than one kid, you can have a bubble- making content and see who can have the most bubbles.

5. Let them choose their own toothpaste

As for the toothpaste, you can give them the freedom to choose their own toothpaste that they would like to use. At the same time, adult toothpaste is too strong for them. They can choose from the different flavors that are now available in the market.

6. Compliment them

Brushing the teeth can be very challenging for them, especially if they have been resistant at first. To encourage them to keep on doing it, compliment every little success they make like

making circles or producing bubbles. Doing so will make them feel successful at what they did and will provide them a sense of pride and happiness.

If you have any trouble encouraging your kids to brush their teeth, consider these above mentioned tips to make the activity fun for them. However, if they continue to resist, it’s best to ask for professional help. If feeling stressed with brushing at home with the kids, try to bring them to the dentist. This will allow the kids to listen to the instruction given by someone who is not their parent. It’s normal for kids to not listen to their parents sometimes!
