6 Tips to Protect Your Home While You Are on Vacation
If you are planning a weekend getaway with the family or packing up to head
south for warmer weather during the cold winter months, it is crucial that you take
all the necessary steps to make sure you home is protected while you are away. Use
the following 6 tips to ensure the safety of your home while you are on vacation.
Ask a friend to keep an eye on
everything while you are gone. It is important to make sure it is someone who
you can fully trust. There are many items that may pile up at your front door such as UPS or FedEx deliveries that could let potential thieves know you are away.
Make sure it looks like you are home. Set lamps or other lights in your home
on timers so they will turn on at certain times. Also, you may consider paying the neighbor's teenager to keep your driveway and sidewalks shoveled or keep the
grass mowed.
Lock all doors and windows. Before you leave for your vacation, go through
your entire house and make sure all doors and windows are locked. Make sure you turn off the garage door function as potential thieves could attempt to gain
entry into your home using a universal garage door remote.
Put you mail on hold. Mail and newspapers piling up in the mailbox and your driveway is a clear sign for intruders that you are away. You can go to your local
post office and put a hold on your mail until you return home.
Do not advertise your upcoming vacation on social media. You may be excited to tell all of your followers on social media about your upcoming trip to
the tropics, but this is not a good idea. The best thing to do is to wait until you are home to post all of your exciting pictures for everyone to see.

Arm your alarm system. You may even consider contacting the monitoring
station to let them know that you are going to be away so if an alarm is triggered, they can immediately dispatch the police to your home. Make sure you tell them
when you will be returning as well.
