Adopting a dog can be a fun experience that you may never forget, but one wrong adoption could turn your world upside down. No matter what type of dog you're looking to adopt, it's always so important that you research the breeder you're adopting from. To make the process easier, here are some questions that you should always ask a breeder from the start:

How long have you been breeding?

The longer someone has bred, the more experience they will have with that particular breed. They will be able to understand certain health issues and better yet, they will be able to answer just about any questions that you may have. If possible, try to stick to a dog breeder that has more than five years of experience.

How do you find potential problems?

A good breeder will always tell you that they have been screened, certified and tested. While anyone can tell you this, a good dog breeder will be able to prove it with paperwork. Be sure to ask for any sort of paperwork that shows that both the puppy and parents have a clean bill of health with no defects.

Do you have the parents here?

While this is completely optional, a good breeder will more than likely have the parents of the puppies on site. This is your chance to interact with the parents, see how they react and check their health history. A very good dog breeder will often just have the mother on site. One of the main reasons is because the breeder will often match up her dog with another from other reputable breeders in the area.

What titles does the dog have?

If you're looking to adopt a higher quality dog, paperwork is highly necessary. For instance, if you're going to adopt a top-quality dog, be sure to ask for the pedigree paperwork. This paperwork is going to show you where the dog came from and who the parents were in the first place.

How were the puppies raised?

If possible, it's always best to check out the atmosphere where the puppies were raised. Was it in a personal home? Was it in a commercial setting? Puppies that are often raised in a household are used to all sorts of sounds such as a dishwasher and vacuum. The last thing that you want is to bring a new puppy home and find out that it's stressed out about everything around it.

Do you offer a guarantee?

A breeder that truly believes in their pups will offer some sort of guarantee. Whether it's a lifetime, one or even five years, there should be some sort of guarantee. That way, if something does happen, you will be able to bring your dog back with no questions asked. One of the main reasons puppies are brought back are because of health issues. If that breeder wasn't able to accept your return, you could be stuck with a costly vet bill.

With so many breeders out there, be sure to talk with at least three to five. By doing so, you're bound to find a great dog for your home and a reputable breeder that truly cares about your well being and not their pocketbook.
