During the entire month or November the 'lhird Battalion, Fit th Mtar1nes was in reserve. From the :r 1rat (l) until ~'le tenth (lO) daY or the month the '!.bird Battalion vas in Tenth (lO) Corps reserve, bivouao1ng at DT 348-207 in the vicinity or WONTCNG-tU. On November tenth (lOth) the Firth Marinee relieved the First Marinas and assumed respons!.bility' ot poa1tlons on the MINNESOTA. LINE. In order to prepare tor thia move, the Commanding Otticer, Opera tiona Officer and Oomnan:v Commanders or the '!.bird Battalion reconncetered the new area 1nspeoting both the proposlld block-ing positions an<1 oheok1ng the proposlld Co111111and Poet tor the battalion.

Rain·c, cold and thawing weather oreated a problem aa paths and roads beoame elippery and muddy: Korean laborers trom the !bpply Section were utilized iDIDiediately and all hands turned to in a daUy progra111 ot oamp 1mprovem.ent. A bull-dozer was used to ULi t roads an.d terraces :irom the side hill fo~ all oompa~ areas. Laborers were used to conet:ruot earthen steps up the hillside. A week after this camp improvement program had begun, several squad tents were erected in each company area and Battalion !bpply reoe1ved stoves :!'or avery tent as well as folding cote. By 30 November, eighty (80) squad tents had been erected in the battalion area.

Contiming untU the last day ot the month, the improvement ot this area beoame a matter of personal pride to every Marine in the battalion.

Because of light rains, the river is higher toda;v and Korean laborers spent tbe day illproving the roClt bridge acrou the river.

'lhe First Marine Division Band arrived at 1130 and played 1n the galley area. tor all hands during tlle :noon mea.l period.

02 'lhe first snow of the year fell today and was 11ixed in with e. light re.!nw 'Ih:!.e snow melted when tt ree.ohed the ground. 'l'he surrounding h11la and peaks, however, are covered w1 th a blanket of snow.

Today an enlisted man, lilo -• absent without leave, from the First Amphibious Traotor Battalion arrived at the 'lhird Battalion Command Post. He said he had left hh unit in order to join an ini'antry •tighting 1 organization. '!he battalion Ser­geant Ma.lor telephoned MUitary Polioe authorties at Division Headquarters and the man was apprehended.

Long underwear pants were issued toda,y to all hands.

A practice formation was held in preporation for to­morrow's awards ceremony.

03 Personnel, clothing and weapons inspeotions were held to­at 0900 by all Oomparq Co.iiUiianders.

Later in the day the regular daily- patrol reported seeing tb.1rt<.r (30) un1d.ent1!1ed pereone on the •kY'l1n~~ Investigation revealed that these men were members of George Company who were carrying out their training probJ.em.

Shots were given to aJ.l hands by the doctors and A1d Station Corpsman.

PaY call was held :tor all handa.

Steak and ice cream were served to aJ.J. hands at evening chow to the delight ot everyone~

06 A BattaJ.ion Staff meeting was held today and plana oom-pleted for the relief of the Third Battalion, Firat Marines on November tenth (lOth). Necessary trucks were allotted to each section and arrangpenta were made to feed brealtfaet to aJ.l the men from 0300 to 04:50 on J.O November.

07 Five (5) officers and one (J.) hundred and fifteen (115) enlhted men arrived today from the Fourteenth RepJ.acement Draft.

At 1330 a squad patrol was displaced to recover an abandoned jeep after it had been ambushed at DT 4227. Upon the patrol e return the jeep wae reoovered and returned to the owner.

OI:S 'Host of the g&.l..Le;r equipment including stoves, tents and. equipment was loaded on to trucks and sent to the neW battalion area.

Item Company patrol departed at 0730 and returned at 1330 re,,orting negative oontaot and information.

09 Tibday the Danny Kaye - Mollica Lewis Special. Services Show highlighted the day-'s agenda. Shown at the Fifth Marines Com­mand Post, a large crowd enjoyed the various acts of entertain­ment.

'lhe Operations Section issued the order for movement and to pr-event mia-1nterpretat1on 1h8 Operat1ong O:f!1eer read the order to all. staff officers at a meeting oalled by the Commanding Officer.

~!ar1nes. Chaplain POWER gave the dedication prarer and Lt.

Oolonel l~C!~EAN delivered the dedication speech.

'!he Battalion Collllllan&rthen intro&.tGed the new Commanding

orricer o:f the F1tth Marines, Colonel HAGER, who presented the

awards. One (1) Brorize Star, three (3) Letters ot Commen~t!on and thirty seven (37) -Purple Hearts were presented to the

assembled men.
