The Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI) established in 1938 is one of the oldest and reputed scientific organizations of the country. The Association publishes a quarterly journal, “Indian Journal of Microbiology” for the last 45 years and holds a National convention annually at one of the well established centers of microbiology in the country. About the City Bhubaneswar Bhubaneswar the capital of Odisha, popularly known as the ‘temple city’ is a city of myriad sights and colours. Few cities in India can rival it in terms of variety of natural landscape as well as its historic grandeur. The city with an abundance of in-city greenery and with the Chandaka reserve forest on the fringes is one of the cleanest and

greenest cities of India. The temples of Bhubaneswar are unparalleled in sheer number and in their superb craftsmanship. With the architectural legacy of the Kalinga Dyansty Bhubaneswar boasts of hundreds of temples including Lingaraj, Mukteswar, Rajarani, Brahmeswar, Vaital, etc. dating from 6th Century AD to 13th Century AD. Apart from remarkably sculptured temples the Jain caves of Khandagiri and Udayagiri, Nandankanan Zoological Park, the peace pagoda ‘Dhauli’ on the banks of river Daya attract visitors from all over the world. Historically, Odisha has been at the forefront of education and research. The ruins of a major ancient university, Puspagiri is also

located in Odisha. Scholars from faraway lands, such as Greece, Persia and China used to study philosophy, astronomy, mathematics and science at this famed university. Bhubaneswar is also famous for its culinary delight. Being a coastal city the accent is on marine food of all kinds, especially prawns, Lobsters and crabs brought in from the Chilika Lake and the sweetest Rasogola of Salepur, Jhilli of Nimapara and Chennapoda of Nayagarh has made Bhubaneswar a paradise for the food lovers. Bhubaneswar is well connected by air, rail and road to the rest of India. The Biju Patnaik Airport located in the heart of the city connects to all the major destination of the country. Being the zonal headquarters of East Coast Railways, Bhubaneswar has remained an important station with several trains starting from here connecting it to almost every other city of India. Besides, all south bound trains from Kolkata passed through Bhubaneswar. With National Highway No. 5 running through the city, Bhubaneswar can be reached from any place between Kolkata and Chennai.

About KIIT University In its journey from a small technical Institute to a world class University, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) has come a long way within the shortest span of time. Since its inception in 1993, KIIT emphasized on quality education and no wonder, it was declared as a University (u/s 3 of UGC Act of 1956) in 2004. Since then KIIT has never looked back. The growth of KIIT as a world class University spreading over 450 acres of prime land in 17 lush green sprawling campuses in a built-up area of 7.5 million square feet in Eastern Indian is incredible indeed. The multi-disciplinary University with 23 constituent Schools offering diverse programmes have proved itself to be the much sought after higher educational centre of the country. With 17000 students pursuing both graduation and post-graduation studies in Engineering, MCA, Management, Rural Management, Law, Biotechnology, Applied Microbiology, MBBS, BDS, Nursing, Fashion Technology, Cinema & Mass Media Studies, Language and Sculpture, KIIT stands out as a class of its own both in quality and quantity.

Theme of the Conference

Amazing advances in microbiology over the past 20 years forced us to think in terms of ever shifting boundaries between the known and the unknown about microorganisms. Just as the first microscopes unveiled an unseen microbial world, the use of modern techniques to enumerate different kinds and numbers of single-cell organisms has forever changed perceptions of the living world. Today we are a witness to a revolutionary innovation in microbial world where scientists have created the world's first synthetic life form in a landmark experiment that paves the way for designer organisms that are built rather than evolved. Though innovation is rapidly becoming a key strategic driver for every system as we enter the second decade of the 21st century, most of us seem to struggle with the understanding on what it is and how to move forward on our journey into innovation. Being able to look at the current trends and see where they will take us is an interesting and thought provoking exercise. Let’s meet with all our past experience and current knowledge to find out the future trends of Microbiology during the 53rd Annual Conference of AMI with a theme ‘Microbial world: Recent Innovations and Future Trends’.
