the client’s consultation lastmonth.“The look is incredibly popular.”Just as Jennifer Aniston’s “The

Rachel” was themost requestedhairdo of themid-1990s, in thisboom time for cosmetic enhance-ments, “TheMegan” is themust-have eyebrow of 2012.Powder and pencil can

only go so far. With thebushier look back invogue— fuller archesare the signature styleof everyone fromKimKardashian to KateMiddleton— special-ists such as Epsteinhave seen a 30 percentrise in the demand foreyebrow transplants.“Over the last two

years, it’s got really big,”adds Epstein, who per-forms between 12 and15 eyebrow surgeriesinNewYork andMiami everymonth.“A lot of womenwant[to copy] the Kar-dashians, butMeganFox is far and awaythe favorite.”The painstaking

and pricey treatment, originally developedfor burn and dog-bitevictims and later usedto remedy baldness inmen, is being increas-ingly used bywomenfor vanity purposes. And, for a new

look, women can expect to paybetween $4,000 and $8,000 for theprocess, which on average takesthree hours.Epstein can seewhy people flock

to Fox’s arches. “She has greatfacial structure, and her browsmake themost beautiful frame forher features. It’s an amazing lookto re-create,” he says. Usingmoretechnical speak, he explains, “Thehairs go straight up at the head of

her eyebrow and then go intoamore crosshatch pattern asthey taper off laterally.”Manhattan health admin-

istrator Jana Jordan, 28, iscertainly pleasedwith her“Megan,” which involvedabout 400 hair follicles beingtransplanted from her scalp

to her brows. The self-con-fessed overpluckerblames genetics forher fine hair and for-merly patchy brows.Nevertheless Jordan

admits to “going cra-zy” with the tweezersin high school, whenthe highlymanicured“Gwen Stefani look”was all the rage.“As timewent by,

and fashions changed,I’d see peoplewiththick eyebrows andthink: ‘Ohmy God,they’re so great!’ ”recalls the Hell’sKitchen resident.“I’d hear girls inthe office sayingto each other,‘You have the besteyebrows!’ — butnobody ever saidthat to me.“I would

constantly colorthem in, but I wasdesperate for a per-manent solution.”She considered

an eyebrowtransplant after being prescribedthe eyelash enhancement drugLatisse, which worked wonders onher lashes but not herbrows.“I’m so glad I

did it becauseit’s exactly myhair colorand it looksso natural,”says

Jordan, who had the surgery atEpstein’s East 56th Street office inJuly 2011.The procedure took about 2¹/₂

hours while Jordan was sedatedwith Valium and Ambien, and received Lidocaineshots to numb the pain.“Mymain concern

was taking hair frommy scalp,” she admits.“If you take an inch ofhair frommy head toadd to my eyebrows, that’s a big deal.” Shedidn’t have to worry. There was no scarring, and thehair on her head grew back. After the surgery, she was con-

cerned when her fuller eyebrowsstarted to fall out. The doctor hadwarned her this would happen asthe follicles became dormant. But three months later, the hair

started growing. And growing.Unlike natural eyebrows, trans-planted brows have to be trimmedbecause they grow at the samerate as the hair on your head.“My eyebrows grew and grew

and, by six months, I had this oldgrandfather look going on!” saysJordan. “I was too scared to cutthem, and it took a lot of courageto finally do it!”

Some ladies go to the salonfor that.

“They need tobe trimmed regu-larly with scissors,”explains JannaMorein, resident

eyebrow specialist at L’InstitutSothys spa inMidtown. But otherthan that, saysMorein, they arejust like normal eyebrow hairs.Another hair-restoration expert,

Dr. Alan Bauman, believes thetrend for fuller brows began withhaute couture models on therunways about four years ago. Itreached the mainstreammorerecently when A-list stars likeAngelina Jolie and Fox startedembracing the look.“It’s definitely becomemore

desirable,” says Bauman, whoperforms between three and fivesuch procedures permonth, aboutdouble the number he did in 2008.Homemaker Kelly Krauss, 44,

of Tewksbury, NJ— a reformedoverplucker— cherishes her new, fuller eyebrows and follows a strictmaintenance regime of combingand trimming in front of themirror. Before her transplants, she used

towear a baseball cap becauseshewas so self-conscious aboutpeople seeing her face. “I had baldspots all acrossmy brows and scartissue frompicking at the skin,”says Krauss, who longed to havedistinctive eyebrows like actressBrooke Shields.Krauss’ husband, Charlie, an

attorney, worried howmuch itwas affecting her confidence and, after searching on the Internet, encouraged her to go aheadwiththe transplant.“Fixingmy eyebrowswas the

best decision I evermade,” saysKrauss, who paid about $5,000 forthe procedure. “I love the fullerlook, and people say it looks verynatural.”

Similarly Vinny Sarro, a 41-year-oldmomof four, is getting usedto her brows being praised afterhaving the treatment inMarch.“My eyebrows started thinning

when Iwas about 27, just likemymomandmy sister,” she says. “I

penciled them in and coloredthem and did permanent

makeup, but I wantedto experimentwithsomething new.”

She calls the$5,500 cost of thesurgery “moneywell spent.”“It took about

an hour and anhalf per eyebrow,

and didn’t hurt at all,” says Sarro,of NewFairfield, Conn. “Nowyoucan’t tell the difference betweenthe natural hairs inmy eyebrowsand the oneswhichwere trans-planted.”

Bauman also believesmorewomen are being drawn to theprocedure because the technologyhas advanced somuch.“We use aminimally invasive

technique known asNeograft, where the follicles can be takenout and re-implanted in the skinwithout the need for stitches,” heexplains. “It just feels like you got asunburn for the day.“The recovery period ismuch

shorter and, though there is aperiod of six to 12weekswherethe hairs fall out and reappear asstubble, [as the follicles regenerate]well over 90 percent of the trans-planted follicleswill grow newhairwithin six to ninemonths of thesurgery.”But he offers aword of caution.

“Peoplemight ask to look likecertain celebrities, but we havetoworkwith their hair type andface shape tomake sure they getthe best possible eyebrow designfor each patient,” he says. “A lot ofartistry goes into it, and it is veryindividual.”There’s also the issue of plastic

surgery begettingmore plasticsurgery.“I am really happywithmy

brows right now,” says Jordan. “Myboyfriend doesn’t understand, ofcourse, but I can seemyself goingback to havemore hairs trans-planted in the future.”
