IntroductionChildren love to read rhymes and poems. They delight in the humor, rhythms, and wordplay. Recognizing rhyming words can also help students improve decoding skills and increase their automatic sight word recognition. Use the leveled word lists (pages 6, 17, 28, 39, and 50) to identify rhymes and poems with the specific sight words that children are currently learning to read. Record each child’s progress on the reproducible student checklist found on page 61.

Teaching SuggestionsUsing the Interactive Whiteboard to Build Word Recognition and Fluency

A variety of strategies for building word recognition and fluency can be used when a rhyme or poem is projected onto an interactive whiteboard. (The following activities can also be done without a whiteboard by making copies of the poems for students.)

After reading the displayed poem to the group several times, . . .

1. Draw attention to certain sight words and let students underline or circle them with a specified highlighter pen. This game of “Seek and Find” is always a favorite. For example, use the poem “Let’s Go and Play in the Snow!” (page 10). Young learners can take turns underlining the word Can in yellow (found six times), circling the word go in green (found seven times), and so on.

2. Choose specific sight words and make them invisible to the students. For example, “hide”the words It is (found six times) in the poem “Up to Us” (page 8). Read aloud the revised poem on the screen. Have students take turns telling the class what words are missing and then touching the blank space in the text to make them magically appear. Of course, when all of the missing words have been found, let the group read the poem aloud in unison one more time. Play again, hiding other words, such as up to you or up to me. By having students read sight words in phrase groupings, this strategy helps bridge the gap between reading word for word and reading longer phrases in meaningful ways.

3. Create a cloze activity to reinforce sight words. The poem “The Big Blue Mouse” (page 20) works well for this exercise. To prepare students for the activity, have them practice reading selected groupings of words. For example, display multiple copies of the phrases a big blue mouse and a little yellow house in random order on the board. As students practice reading the phrases, mix up the order of the phrases to keep it gamelike. Wrap up this guided reading lesson with the cloze activity. Beforehand, prepare a version of the poem by deleting the words mouse and house and drawing blanks for those missing

Let’s Go and Play in the Snow!

Can I go? Can he go?

Can she go? Can we go?

Can they go? Can you go?

It would be so sad,

if no fun could be had.

So, please let’s go

and play in the snow.

words in the text. Display the revised poem along with the word bank of the missing sight words on the whiteboard. Let students write the corresponding words in the blanks. Or, set up the activity so that students touch and drag each sight word to complete a sentence correctly.

4. To improve fluency, assign parts to students like a readers’ theater script. The poem “My Cat” (page 36) is a good selection for this simplified exercise. Divide the class into two groups. In the poem, highlight each question on the whiteboard with the green highlighter pen and each statement with the blue pen. Point out the punctuation marks as needed and model phrases by reading them aloud with expression and pauses. Sounding as one voice with you, the first group reads aloud the question, and the second group replies with the answer. Repeat this exercise several times, switching parts to keep students engaged.

5. Display the sentences in the poem in random order. To prepare the text for the activity, use the software to isolate each sentence as a graphic. Then, display the individual sentences and have students read each one as a choral reading or echo reading exercise. Finally, let students touch and drag the individual sentences to place them in the correct sequence. Of course, the pieces can be mixed up again for additional reading fun! The poem “Oh Crumbs!”(page 55) is a good example for this exercise.

Building Memory Skills

Enlarge or recopy a poem onto a bulletin board. Let students decorate around the board to highlight the meaning or theme of the poem. For example, the children could make footprints to add to a bulletin board featuring the poem “My Feet” (page 9). Display the poem on a bulletin board on a Monday. As a class, read the poem daily. On Friday, see if any students can recite the poem without looking at the words.
