AIR POLLUTION REDUCTION

Milton J Maguire

The method of reducing air pollution comprises treating air-polluting waste industrial flue gases containing sulfur dioxide in a manner effective to substantially reduce the content of sulfur dioxide therein and remove it in the form of a sulfuric acid by-product prior to discharge of the treated flue gases into the atmosphere. The treatment in- volves the use of towers and nitrogen oxides for effecting the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to the trioxide. Preferably, the waste industrial flue gas is separated into a low molecular weight fraction and a higher molecular weight portion, as by centrifugal action to concentrate the heavier sul- fur dioxide molecules, before treating only the higher weight portion.

METHOD FOR REMOVING NITROGEN OXIDES FROM

WASTE GASES

Hors Bechthold, Heinz J Fischer, Wolfgang Schulte, Erftstadt Friesheim, Federal Republic Of Germany assigned to Buckau-Walther Ak- tiengesellschaft

A method is provided for removing nitrogen ox- ides from waste gases, said method comprising the steps of oxidizing the nitrogen oxides in the waste gases by contacting the waste gases in a gas phase with an oxidizing agent to form N02; abs- orbing the formed NO2 in an absorbing stage by contacting the oxidized waste gases with an abs- orbing agent to form an absorbing product while substituting fresh water for vaporized water in

corresponding amounts; and processing the resultant absorbing product as a solution.

CATALYST FOR TREATING WASTE GASES

Kozo Iida, Yoshiaki Obayashi, Kanonshin, Japan assigned to Mitsubishi Jukogyo Kabushiki Kaisha

A catalyst for treating waste gases comprising nitrogen oxides, which catalyst comprises a pro- tonized zeolite coating formed on the surface of a catalytic ingredient. This type of catalyst has a prolonged life and is very useful in treating waste gases comprising nitrogen oxides by adding ammonia to the waste gas and reducing the nitrogen oxides in the waste gas with the catalyst to render the nitrogen oxides non-noxious.

THERMAL DECOMPOSITION FURNACE OF WASTE TIRES

Yoshihiko Ueda, Ikuo Saito, Kazumasa Sakae, Tetuo Oogiri, Chiba, Japan assigned to Onoda Cement Co Ltd

A thermal decomposition furnace in which waste tires having original shape, not broken up, can be laid horizontally and be thermally decom- posed. The furnace is constructed by providing a feeder above, forming downward a fluidized bed-forming section having inlets for air, for- ming beneath a sealing bed-forming section of right cylindrical shape having a diameter smaller than that of fluidized bed-forming section, and installing a conveyor below said sealing bed-
