natural phenomenon.

The greenhouse effect is a

It is necessary for life on earth.

Without it, the average temperature on earth

(15 °C), would be about 30 °C lower at -

15 degrees.

Earth

Venus

Mars

All planets with an atmosphere have a greenhouse effect.

Page 4: 4. greenhouse effect

Water vapour (H2O)

Nitrous oxide (N2O)

Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Methane (CH4)

Greenhouse gases capture the infrared rays that warm the air closest to earth. These gases, pictured, absorb the heat radiated from the earth. This radiated energy heats the earth.

This energy cannot escape the

atmosphere.

Page 5: 4. greenhouse effect

Human activities interfere with the natural greenhouse effect: causes an increase in greenhouse gases, which leads to global

warming.

Definition: Global Warming

Page 8: 4. greenhouse effect

Since 1987, solar activity has been declining. Under

these conditions we should see some

cooling of average temperatures but

instead global warming continues to

rise.

Today, the Earth is in the part of the orbit

where it is less exposed to the Sun.

However, temperature records show a sudden and steep increase of average surface temperatures.

Volcanic eruptions emit carbon dioxide

(CO2) into the Earth’s atmosphere. Yet,

humans create 146 time more CO2 than volcanoes each year.

But natural causes cannot be causing current global warming.

Page 9: 4. greenhouse effect

It is commonly accepted that most of the rise in the average temperature of the earth over the last 50 years is due to human activities.

Page 10: 4. greenhouse effect

Effects of global warming

Page 12: 4. greenhouse effect

Rising world temperatures pose risks to life on earth.

Coastal flooding

Extreme precipitation events

Droughts

Heat waves

Heat waves and droughts lead to un-controllable brush Fires.
