STUDENT MANUAL SCIENCE / LESSON 177

Lesson 177 First Aid

An injury that you might get can be treated right away. To get it treated correctly, you should tell a parent, a teacher, a school nurse or the responsible adult who is with you.

First Aid

The care that is given to an injury right away is called first aid. A cut on your arm or hand or a skinned knee usually needs first aid. First aid can help you heal more quickly and help the injury not become infected.

At home or at school there are items that can be used to give first aid to small injuries. For example, there are different sizes of bandages. These can be used to cover skinned knees or to stop a cut from bleeding. There is also first aid cream that can help keep a wound from becoming infected. An elastic bandage can be used to wrap a sprained ankle or wrist. There are also antiseptic pads that can clean cuts.

Cuts

Even though you may be being careful, you still may get a cut sometime. You need to tell your parent, teacher, school nurse or the responsible adult who is with you. You should never let someone touch a cut you have or your blood. You should also never touch someone else’s cut or blood. There is a possibility of a cut having germs. So it should be cleaned with soap and water or an antiseptic. After it is clean, the cut should be dried off and a first aid cream to help keep germs away should be applied.

After that a bandage should be placed on the cut to protect it, stop it from bleeding and keep the first aid cream in place. The bandage should be changed daily, until the cut forms a scab. Then you can leave the bandage off of the cut. Air helps the cut to heal after a scab has formed.

A deep cut or one that has much bleeding needs to be taken care of immediately. A clean cloth or gauze needs to be placed over the bleeding and pressure should be applied. This will help slow or stop the bleeding. Placing the body part that has the cut above the level of your heart will also help slow the bleeding. If your arm or leg has a cut, you should lay down and prop your arm or leg on a pillow so that it is higher than your heart.

Nosebleeds

Nosebleeds can happen when you least expect it. Sometimes nosebleeds happen when you get hit in the nose. Other times you can just blow your nose and it can begin bleeding. If you have a nosebleed, do not move around a lot or blow your nose anymore.

First, to stop a nosebleed you should have the person sit down. Then have the person lean slightly forward and pinch his nose. If there continues to be a lot of bleeding, you can pinch the nose with tissue. Sometimes a serious nosebleed needs to have a cold compress applied to the nose. If after a half hour or so the nose is still bleeding, you need to see a doctor, possibly go to the emergency room.

After a nosebleed is stopped, the person with the nosebleed needs to wash his hands with soap and water. The person helping to stop the nosebleed, also needs to wash his hands with soap and water.

A Sprain

An injury to a ligament is a sprain. One or more of the ligaments is stretched or torn. There are many different things that can cause a sprain. Falling, twisting or being hit by a force can all cause a sprain. Most sprains happen to an ankle. Sometimes your wrist or thumb can be sprained. You know a body part is sprained if you have pain, swelling, bruising or you aren’t able to move or use the joint.

To treat the sprain, you should elevate the body part that is sprained. Then you should place ice on the body part. You need to keep the sprained body part still and try not to use it. Ice should be placed on the sprain for as long as there is swelling. Ice can be left on

the sprain for 20 minutes at a time. After a few days, when the swelling has decreased, you may place heat on the sprain. This will help the injury heal.

STUDENT MANUAL THIRD GRADE SCIENCE / LESSON 178

Lesson 178 An Emergency

Sometimes when a person is hurt, first aid isn’t enough to help her. You need to know what to do in an emergency situation.

What You Should Do

When a person is hurt badly, she needs help right away. If you are there when someone needs emergency care, there are things you can do. An emergency is a serious event. It is a crisis that requires immediate action.

There are some actions you can take in an emergency. First, you need to stay calm and think clearly. Then have the person who is hurt lie still. You shouldn’t move the hurt person because you don’t want to make the injury worse. You can cover the person with a blanket, someone’s coat or a sweatshirt to keep her warm. Then go get help from a parent, a teacher or the responsible adult who is with you.

When to Call 911

Think about what you would do if you were home alone with your mom. You mom falls and is seriously injured. What would you do? If there isn’t another adult around, you need to call someone for help. There is a special number you can call when there is an emergency. This number is 911. When someone answers, you need to tell the person that you have an emergency. The operator will probably ask you what your name is and where you are. You need to stay calm and answer all of the operator's questions as clearly as you can. The operator may give you directions that you need to listen carefully to. Do not hang up the phone until the operator tells you to hang up the phone. The operator will make sure that the help you need is on its way.

The Emergency Room

The help that an operator may send is an ambulance. The ambulance may take the person who is hurt to an emergency room. In the emergency room there are doctors to help people who are injured. The doctors may need to give the patient oxygen or medication. The doctor might also need to place a cast on a broken arm or leg. An injured person might also have a cut that is bleeding a lot. The doctor will give the patient stitches to stop the bleeding. Usually a person who is treated in the emergency room is able to go home. Sometimes the person must be admitted to the hospital.

Lesson Wrap-Up: Have the student make a list about what to do if she would need to call 911. This list can be written on an index card to keep near her home phone.
