Legal status of biogas in Brazil

National Regulatory Agenda on Biogas

Small scale biodigestor

Purpose: treat dejecta and generate biogas and biofertilizer

Producers of protein and biomass

Purpose: confine animals to enhance protein production and avoid disposal of dejecta

in the environment

Biogas for domestic use

Small scale gas holder and biomass homogenizer

Gas holder purpose: store biogas for local use Homogenizer purpose: treat biomass before going to biodigester

Biogas for domestic use

Coocking

Purpose: replace use of natural gas into biogas produced locally

Mechanical energy

Purpose: Replace use of electric energyfor water pumping and for agricultural slurry pumping

Biogas for domestic use

Vehicle fuelPurpose: Promote production and use of biomethane generated with biogas from agricultural residues and dejecta of rural activities.

Local production x local use = territorial development

Partners: CIBiogás-ER, ITAIPU Binacional, Scania, Haacke FarmProject monitored by the Nacional Oil Agency

Bus: Euro 6, built to be used with natual gas, 300 kms autonomy70% less gas emission comparing to a diesel bus

Bus performance: 19 days, 2800 kms, 3000 people transported400 tones of CO2 equivalent emission avoided

Biogas for industrial use

Biomethane Production System – Scania project

Biogas production unit: Haacke Farm

Location: Paraná, 100 km from ITAIPU

Animals: 184.000 laying hens, and 750 bovines.

Biomass treatment: Covered lagoon biodigestor

Biogas production: 1.000 m3/day

Energies production: Electricity and biomethane

Biogas for industrial use

Biogas purification system

Biogas purification: PSA (Pressure Swing

Adsorption).

Biomethane production capacity: 43 m³/h.

Operation: 16 hours per day

Biogas for industrial use

Biomethane Supply System

Biomethane Supply Station Itaipu vehicles running with biomethane

Biogas for industrial use

Biogas for industrial use

Ch4pa Tractor: Multi purpose tractor running with biomethaneCooperation with Spirit Design and ADA-Austria to develop a tractor running with biomethane

- GEF project

Chracteristics• Flex engine (biomethane and ethanol);• Modular and simple; • Multi use;• Shared intellectual property.

Benefits Enhance the value chain in agribusiness; Enhance production and create new jobs; Low investment and high performance; Replace rural use of diesel; Low gas emission.

Common grain dryer

Indirect heating with controlled temperature

Grain dryer capacity: 470 bags of 60 kg or 28,2 tones of grains

Agri-Energy Cooperative for Family Farming

Cooperative production and use of biogas

Agri-Energy Cooperative for Family Farming

Purpose: Prove viability of biogas generation by small rural properties by common organization

Business: Daily cattle and swine productionNumber of rural properties: 33Biogas pipeline length: 25,5 kmNumber of daily cattle: 1072Number of swine: 3082Waste production from swine: 35,79 m³/dayBiogas production from swine: 699,79 m³/day TotalTotal number of animals: 4.154Total waste (manure) production: 48.43 m³/dayTotal biogas production: 820 m³/day

Cooperative production and use of biogas

Biodigester for less than 100 m³ of biomass

Pipeline construction

Biogas treatment unit

Biodigester for more than 100 m³ of biomass

Cooperative production and use of biogas

Biogas and Biomethane Holders

Biogas holder: 275 m³

Material: Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM or rubber)

Biomethane holder: 60 m³

Material: High Density Polyethylene or HDPE

Cooperative production and use of biogas

. Generation of income

. Enhancement of rural economy

. Green fuel for domestic, industrial and cooperative uses

. Reduction of hydro resources contamination and water eutrofication

. Production of biofertilizer

. Reduction of bad smell in rural properties

. Reduction of mosquitos and flies in rural properties

. Reduction of human and animal diseases

. Enhancement of distributed generation

. Enhancement of energy systems generation
