Thank you for 35 years of Support

Past and present Keystonemembers, true Simmental

supporters and promoters

What an exciting time to be a cattle breeder. This fall we are seeing record prices for calves at auctions barns, cull cows and bulls are at record highs. The future also looks bright with cattle numbers low. Now is the time to take you poor

producers and replace them with fresh Keystone Konnection Genetics.

The 2014 offering will be as strong as ever. If you are looking for bred heifers, check out this offering of breds, many with noted breeding dates. The heifer calves are

always exciting as our consignments bring the best of the breed of our heifer calf traits. Also Cherry Creek has a select

group of Full Fleckvieh herdsires for your appraisal.

Plan to be in Brandon on December 9, 2014 to see this strong offering. If you can’t attend but would like some

assistance with selecting the cattle for you operation, or would like us or any of the sale staff to represent you in the strictest of confidence, Please give us call. Also new this year the sale will be broadcast live online with www.

cattleinmotion (see page 2).

Keystone Sales ManagementPresidents MessageAfter 10 long years, finally it’s arrived- the cattle prices the

industry needs and deserves. Congratulations to all those who stuck it out, in the process making their cattle and indeed their whole operation much more efficient. The most encouraging thing is we’re seeing some new enthusiastic faces in the beef

business.

The difference between the good cattle and the rest is as important as ever financially, but especially to move your herd

forward. A cow calving in your 2nd breeding cycle ( just 3 weeks later) will return $100 less than her earlier herd mates. If she settled in the 4th cycle, that becomes $300 less. Send your less productive and late cows to town, and replace them with productive young females with a documented pedigree and history. And while you’re at it, take a look at the bulls in

this sale - beef machines that will sire those top end profitable calves. See you on December 9th.

Bruce and Rhonda Curle, along with their children, Tyler and Rebecca, raise 125 Simmental influenced cattle near Minnedosa, MB.The interest in beef cattle started at a young age when Bruce joined the Minnedosa 4-H Beef Club in 1979. His first steer was a Charolais/Hereford cross, but the desire to own a Simmental was already in the sights. The first 3/4 blood Simmental heifer was purchased from Frank Stanley in 1982 and was sired by Diamond Bar Duke. A second heifer was also purchased that winter from Mel Wolfe at Douglas. In 1983 Bruce’s family purchase their first Simmental bull sired by Canadian Salvator from RKT Simmentals. Since then he has kept the Simmental influence in the herd.Since getting involved in the cattle industry, they have witnessed the evolution of the Simmental breed. From the frame scores of the 1980’s to the polled or nothing of the ‘90’s, to the introduction of the red and black purebreds. The results we see now are an extremely useful and efficient breed of cattle.

Both work off the farm full time so the cattle are expected to look after themselves. The cows and heifers are calved in open pastures in April and May. The cow herd is fall grazed till mid November then bale grazed until mid March when they are brought

home. They feel strongly the Simmental influence has allowed them to manager their herd this way and

have good results in both weaning weights and conception rates, two things they feel are critical to their success. They are excited about the future of the cattle business and look forward to the years ahead. Now that BSE is in our past, they hope

the lesson’s we learned from in will help us in the future. The cow herds that are still operating

are doing much more economically and that also includes the cattle themselves.

Curles would like to thank the Keystone Simmental Association for this recognition and look forward to visiting with old and new friends in the barn today. They would also enjoy having your stop in for a coffee and herd tour in you are ever in the Minnedosa area.

a stylish black blazed faced heifer that quickly became a pasture favorite. the blaze face are certainly becoming popular with breeders and commercial cattlemen and women. lots of quarter, smooth made, and yet as feminine and broody as they come. Her dam “brandy” is a moderate framed, barrel ribbed cow that milks extremely well and always brings in good one! brody’s sire “rKts alliance” is impressing us with the length and rapid growth that he is exhibiting with his progeny. This is the first Alliance bred heifer we have brought to town. I think you will be impressed.Bred: Crossroad Black Belt 312W, April 11th.

a March bred heifer that has a lot of depth, good thickness and a bangup haircoat! Our 1st half blood Simmentals were registered in 1972 – mothered by our father Mel’s purebred Hereford cows. We were original members of the now dissolved South-West Manitoba Simmental Association. This is our 15th year as a member of the Keystone Simmental Association and we enjoy being part of this great group. Our herd is on a comprehensive herd health program and our consignments have all tested negative for BVD-PI. The two service sires to our sale heifers are in the top 1% of the breed for calving ease EPDs. Our females are only marketed through this sale and our sale bulls are consigned to the “Rebels Of The West” Bull Sale held each spring at Virden in early April.

I still have a small herd of 15 purebred red and black cows. This past spring RKT Simmentals sold a bull out of a first calf heifer that he purchased as a calf at the Keystone Sale.. The bull was the high seller at the Premium Beef Bull Sale selling for $22,000. WLB Livestock sold a bull for $6900 out of a first calver that he had bought from me as calf a the Keystone sale. Both of these bulls mothers were purchased for as little as $2500 and their production records so far have made me very happy. I congratulate both of these breeders for the success they’ve had with these young cows. Great cows come out of this association sale. Hopefully you will find my consignments this year worthy of being part of this great sale.

this heifer gives that phrase “easy doing” an entirely new meaning. not a big heifer but a tank. no creep but looks like she’s been on barley creep all summer. Her sire is a bull scott and anne Clements bought and i took 3 cows to him a year ago to get bred. My 3 calves and their calves are tremendously consistent and good. If you want to raise calves with this ease of fleshing, take a serious look at this heifer.

84B has been an absolute pet since the day she was born. She is very angular and profiles as a complete package of style, depth of body, quarter and width of top! he is a reflection of her mother; a hard working first calver we bought out of Bonchuk’s sale last fall.

89b is as her mother quite a female. this heifer has come along very nicely for a March calf. she has a tremendous top and you won’t find a longer spined heifer. As well she does not lack that eye appeal and style we look for in our females. This girl is out of a powerhouse of a cow Chris bought out of this sale as one of the high sellers in 2012.

“With the cull cow market still strong, now is a great time to cull the herd of the poor performing cows and replace them with the ones that will maximize your returns when you sell the calves.”

Broken Oak Black ISmmentals

Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Keystone Konnection Sale from all of us at B.O.B.S. Located overlooking the scenic valley of the Little Saskatchewan River just east of Rapid City, Broken Oak Black Simmental is proud and pleased to once again be a part of this annual event. As one of the first in the province to introduce black genetics into a purebred herd, we have been breeding primarily black Simmental for so long I have lost count of the year our first ½ blood calf arrived. We knew then it was something we wanted to be a part of and have now developed a small, elite herd of multi- generational solid black, polled females that meet our criteria and the high standards for beef production demanded by purebred and commercial cattlemen alike. Along with my wife Lois, daughter Lesley and her husband Trent we welcome you to stop by the stall and assess our offering this year and chat with myself, Lesley or Brooklyn about our program.

Lot a very fancy young lady to say the least! Paternal sister to the junior Champion, Grand Champion, and all breeds jackpot Heifer Champion at the Msa summer show in boissevain, this female has tremendous potential for her new owner. if you are looking for a show heifer or just want her to be a momma cow, 445b should be every bit as good as her dam who is an awesome “in Dew time” / “sevens” cross. the sim-acta event always brings out the best heifers from this strong group of dedicated breeders, and we had this beauty slated for the Keystone from the time she could walk. Check her out, you won’t be disappointed.

Antrim Simmentals

Welcome to the 36th annual Keystone Konnection Simmental Sale. Antrim Simmental is located 10 miles north of Minnedosa on highway 262 approximately 2 miles north of Clanwilliam. I have been a member of the Association for a number of years. As a newcomer to Canada this was an excellent way to meet new people and get involved in the Simmental industry, as they are a friendly group to get along with. In my herd the focus is on polled fullblood heifers. Buyers are invited to view the heifers and the herd at the farm or phone John for more information.
