31 Days of Bystander InterventionBulletin board with 31 suggestions to help your residents be more effective active bystanders, brought to you by One Act

You can put all 31 up at once, or put one up each day to keep residents coming back

Page 2: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

1 Offer to watch your friends’ drinks at a party

Page 3: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

2 Talk to your friends about their intentions for the night while everyone is sober – do they want to hook up tonight?

Page 4: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

3 When you’re ready to go home, don’t let a friend stay at the party alone

Page 5: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

4 Offer to walk someone home if they’ve had too much to drink. Bring another person along so you have someone to walk with you later!

Page 6: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

5 Suggest an alternative activity, like getting food at a late-night place.

Page 7: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

6 Establish a relationship with someone – pretend to be someone they know from class, a club, or high school

Page 8: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

7 Spill a drugged drink – all over yourself, the floor, etc. And then ask people to help you clean up if needed!

8 “Accidentally” turn on the lights if you see someone who looks uncomfortable on the dance floor

Page 10: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

9Talk to your friends about what you see and make a plan to intervene together. All it takes to get the conversation started is a text saying, “does this situation seem weird to you?”

10 Get the host/bouncer involved. These people have power over their guests and have the authority to kick people out

Page 12: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

11Dance intervention! If someone looks uncomfortable on the dance floor, dance in between them and their dance partner to give them space to leave

Page 13: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

12 Tell someone their wallet or phone was found in the kitchen

Page 14: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

13 Tell someone their friend is sick in the bathroom and asking for them. Or tell your friend that YOU feel sick and need them.

Page 15: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

14 Photo op! Initiate a group photo to give someone space to get away

Page 16: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

15 Real talk – tell someone they are being creepy and should stop or leave the party (bring a friend if you’re intimidated)

Page 17: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

16 If the PJ has been spiked with a drug, call 911.

Page 18: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

17 Offer water, soda, or another alternative to alcohol.

18 Strike up a conversation about anything! The weather or UNC sports are always up for grabs.

Page 20: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

19 Tweet about a sketchy party to keep others away

Page 21: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

20Encourage people to avoid drinking anything with unknown contents. Only let your friends accept drinks which were poured in front of y’all and have not been left unattended at any time.

21Sometimes calling the cops or threatening to do so is the most effective thing – it might be a “party foul,” but it could save someone from sexual assault or rape

Page 23: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

22 Pretend to trip and bump into someone to insert yourself into the conversation.

Page 24: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

23 Call someone a cab and chat with them until the cab arrives. Don’t leave them alone.

Page 25: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

24 When it’s loud, get close to someone’s ear to ask “Are you okay with this” or “Do you want help?”

Page 26: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

25Keep your friends in your sights. Don’t let them go to a private location with someone they just met when they are drunk and can’t consent.

26 Turn on a popular group dance song and show off your moves!

27 Find the person’s friends if you don’t know them, and make them aware of the situation.

28 When you go out, go with a group of friends.  Arrive together, check in with each other throughout the evening, and leave together.

29 Change the music to a song everyone can’t help but sing along to

Page 31: 31 Days of Bystander Intervention

30 Ask someone to come with you to get a drink or say hi to one of their friends.
