We dedicate this 30th anniversary open house to the hundreds of donors and volunteerswho built and supported Heiwa Terrace throughout the years. Thanks to the service of itsvolunteers, financial support of its donors, and the dedication and hard work of its man-agement and staff, Heiwa Terrace serves as a model of excellence in subsidized seniorhousing. It is ranked by the United States Department of Housing and UrbanDevelopment (HUD) as one of the top seniorfacilities in Chicago. We salute the HeiwaTerrace donors and volunteers, includingformer members of the volunteer Board ofDirectors, as well as those who served onthe Heiwa Terrace staff over the years. Theirnames are listed on the following pages.

Welcome

About Heiwa TerraceHeiwa Terrace is a 12-story apartment building

with 201 units, providing federally subsidized hous-ing for seniors and those who require wheelchairaccessible housing. Owned and operated by theJapanese American Service Committee HousingCorporation, a not-for-profit organization, HeiwaTerrace is located at 920 W. Lawrence, Chicago. Itslovely Japanese garden is a notable landmark thatadorns the northeast corner of Sheridan Road andLawrence Avenue.

In the 1970s, the Japanese American ServiceCommittee (JASC), the Midwest’s oldest AsianAmerican social-services agency, identified thegrowing need for affordable housing to serve itscommunity’s aging population. Naming the project“heiwa,” the Japanese word for peace, JASC spear-headed the development of Heiwa Terrace, with

construction financed through theUnited States Department ofHousing and Urban Development.HUD continues to provide rentalassistance. Eligibility for residencyat Heiwa Terrace is governed by

HUD rules and regulations that restrict occupancyto seniors 62 and older. Those who require wheel-chair-accessible housing must be 18 and older.Income restrictions mandate 40% occupancy byresidents whose annual adjusted gross income isclassified as “extremely low income.”

Heiwa Terrace strictly observes open housinglaws that prohibit discrimination because of race, religion or national origin. It has a diverse occupan-cy including all races and many different cultures. It is one of a few subsidized housing facilities spon-sored by Asian Americans in Chicago and the onlyone built by the Japanese American community.
