To The Management The Grease Recovery Device (GRD) installed in your facility is constructed of the finest materials and it is designed for ease of operation, easy maintenance, and long life. It was not designed, however, to take the place of a garbage disposal. Flushing food particles down the drain is a common, but counterproductive, kitchen habit. The use of a solid sediment strainer with your GRD will increase the efficiency of the system and your facility, while decreasing down time due to a clogged sanitary system. Small food particles passing through the sediment strainer will be entrained in the grease-oil, carried to the surface, and removed automatically. The quality of discharged waste water is given high priority by today's regulatory bodies. The general rule is that industrial waste water shall contain no more than 200 milligrams per liter of suspended solids (oil-grease), and no more than the same amount of biochemical oxygen demand (garbage). For confirmation of the above standards and those of your locality, talk with any central sewage treatment official, health department Inspector-Sanitarian, design engineer, architect, or plumbing engineer. As stewards of the environment, we have the responsibility and the opportunity to help preserve it. Grease and oils recovered by Grease Recovery Devices (GRDs) are now being recycled, which is far better than pumping contaminated grease and oils from outside interceptors. Such wastes clog our landfills and overwhelm sanitation treatment facilities.

Overview The Grease Recovery Device (GRD) installed in your facility will remove fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from wastewater. Your stainless steel system operates automatically to separate almost all of the grease from the water flowing through it. This book will help you better understand the unit's process and function. If you have any questions, comments, or ideas, please email us at [email protected] or call us at (301) 948-5538. We will provide you with a prompt response, and if there is a problem with the equipment, we will put you in touch with your local distributor.

Operation This section describes the general operation of the Grease Recovery Device. The timers on your system might be set to operate for longer periods of time, depending on the amount of grease in your establishment. Also, if you have more than one GRD, the timers on each might be set differently from each other, again depending on the amount of grease each has to handle. Figure 1 shows a suggested installation of the GRD and a standard sediment strainer. Figure 2 shows the inside of the GRD. Figure 3 illustrates the paths of the water and the grease through the GRD.

The GRD and the sediment strainer are installed between the sinks (or dishwasher) and the sanitary drain. The basket in the sediment strainer catches larger food parts that might otherwise clog up the GRD. The GRD is designed to hold the grease in the retention area of the GRD while allowing the water to flow out of the unit into the sanitary system. Once a day the GRD starts up automatically and removes the grease from the retention area and stores it in the grease collector box. The system is activated by two electric timers. The first timer activates the heating element, which liquefies the grease. After 60 minutes, the second timer starts the motor powering the roller. The grease is picked up by the roller, cleaned off by the wiper blade, and fed through a clear plastic tube into the collector box. The motor and heater operate simultaneously for a set amount of time and then shut off. The process can be easily observed by removing the system cover. Inside the GRD are three distinct areas, separated by baffles. The first area is the inlet, which serves as a diverter to keep the in-rushing water from churning up the second area, which is the grease retention area.

Figure 2. Grease Recovery Device

The second area has a heater element, a stainless steel roller driven by the motor, and a wiper blade. The water in this area is relatively calm, which allows the grease to float to the top of the water. When the GRD motor is running, the grease is picked up on the roller as it turns. The wiper blade cleans the grease off of the roller and channels it out of the grease retention area into the plastic pipe leading to the grease collector box. The third area of the GRD is the discharge area. Clear water from the second area flows under the baffle, at the bottom of the GRD, while the grease, which is floating on top of the water, is kept out of the discharge area by the baffle. From the discharge area, the water goes out of the GRD and into the sanitary system. The outlet of the GRD is set lower than the inlet so that there is a constant flow of water through the GRD whenever the sinks are being used, whether the roller motor is running or not.

Physical Assembly Physical assembly involves placing the GRD properly in your establishment and assembling the grease collector box. 1. Position the GRD and sediment strainer.

When deciding where to install the GRD and the sediment strainer; keep in mind the following: • If the GRD will be installed with the motor against a wall, GK&L recommends that

you use Furnco-type coupler on the inlet and outlet pipes of the GRD so that it can be moved away from the wall for service.

• GK&L recommends that you allow at least 16 inches above the GRD and the sediment strainer to allow easy access for cleaning and service.

• Allow a minimum of 13 inches between the GRD and the standard sediment strainer. 2. If possible, seal the bottom of the GRD and the sediment strainer to the floor with clear

silicone. 3. Assemble the grease collector box as shown in Figure 5, using the elbow, plastic hose,

and container provided. The plastic hose can be shortened if necessary. Coating the inside of the ends of the plastic hose with dishwashing soap will make it easier to attach the hose to the elbows.

Caution Do not modify any of the fittings or the flanges of the Grease Recovery Device.

Call GK&L Service (301-948-5538) if there are concerns with the placement or fit of any of the Grease Recovery Device components.

Solid Sediment Strainers The solid sediment strainer is installed in line between the sink(s) and the GRD. The surface mount sediment strainer (Figure 6) should be installed so that it is easily accessible for cleaning. Model S-200 has three (3) inlets for ease of installation in any configuration. (Cap off unused inlets.) Models S-175 and S-350 have one inlet. The recessed sediment strainer (Figures 7 and 8). should be installed so that it is out of the main traffic path, if possible. This model’s 35 GPM capacity will accommodate a three-compartment sink, a two-compartment sink, and a dishwasher. Perforated interior side walls allow maximum flow even when the sediment basket is full.

Plumbing The GRD comes with the piping from the GRD to the grease collector box. All other pipes and connections must be provided by the plumber. In particular, the plumber needs to provide the following parts: 1. PVC lines from the sinks or dishwasher to the inlet of the GRD or sediment strainer. 2. PVC lines between the sediment strainer and GRD, including a vent pipe, if used. 3. PVC male threaded connector and PVC discharge line from the GRD outlet. After the plumbing connections have been made, fill the GRD with water to protect the heater from damage before the electrical connections are made.

Caution The heater will be destroyed if the GRD is dry when power is supplied to it.

Sinks When more than one sink discharges into a single GRD, avoid long pipe runs. The maximum number of sinks that can discharge at the same time is determined by the capacity of the GRD. GK&L recommends that a flow control be installed before the sediment strainer inlet in multiple-sink configurations with solid connections.

Note Check with local codes regarding requirements for indirect discharge or

solid connections.

Subsequent Settings During the first several days of operation, monitor the amount of grease your establishment generates and adjust the timers accordingly. Each day, after the motor stops running, remove the lid of the GRD and see how much grease is still in the grease retention area. There should be a small amount of grease still floating on the top of the water. If there is a significant amount of grease left every day, the run time of the roller motor can be increased in 15-minute increments by adjusting Timeclock B. (Pull up all of the tabs between the start time and the stop time. Figure 15 shows Timeclock B set to run for 60 minutes.) NOTE: Timeclock A must be adjusted also, so that the stop time for both timers is the same. Guidelines • Timer A (the heater) must be set to start a minimum of 60 minutes before Timer B, and to

stop at the same time as Timer B. • Don’t run the roller motor for so long that the grease retention area is completely emptied

of grease, as this can add small amounts of water to the collected grease. • During holiday seasons and times of heavier usage, it might be prudent to set the timers

to run the GRD for a longer period. • The timeclocks do not adjust automatically for daylight savings time. (When setting the

time of day on the timeclocks, always turn the dial counterclockwise.) • If the power to the building goes out, the time clocks will need to be reset. • When the power to the GRD is turned off for routine maintenance or for service, the

timers are also turned off. This means that the timers should be reset as part of the monthly maintenance procedures.

MAINTENANCE Your Renn Grease Recovery Device is designed to give you maximum efficiency with minimal maintenance. Each system is inspected at our facility for workmanship and operational standards. Properly installed, the system will function without problems. Like any high quality appliance, certain care must be taken to assure problem-free operation.

The Following Procedures Must Be Followed:

Daily: Sediment Strainer At least once a day, and more often if necessary: 1. Remove the strainer basket, empty it into a trash receptacle, and rinse out the basket. 2. Replace the basket and top, and continue daily maintenance of the GRD. Grease Recovery Device 1. Empty the grease collector box into a recycling container and wash the box. 2. Remove the plastic elbow and tube from the grease outlet pipe. Wash the plastic tube

assembly. 3. While the elbow and tube are removed, check the grease outlet pipe for blockage.

Remove blockage if necessary. 4. Reattach the elbow, tube, and plastic container. When reattaching the elbow and tube to

the grease outlet pipe, be sure that the plastic elbow is slanted downward.

Weekly Sediment Strainer 1. Remove the strainer basket, empty it into a trash receptacle, and rinse out the basket. 2. Run fresh water through the sediment strainer for a few minutes. 3. While the water is running, stir the bottom of the sediment strainer with a brush to

remove any sediment. 4. Replace the basket and top, and continue weekly maintenance of the GRD. GRD - Fine silt, (e.g. flour, corn meal etc. ) will build up on the bottom of the GRD. This buildup of solids can block either the primary "V" baffles or the final outlet baffle. The following preventive maintenance takes only minutes.

Warning Make certain that the unit is not operating (Power off). Make sure breaker is off.

Injury could result if appliance operates while being serviced.

1. Turn off the power to the GRD. 2. Remove the cover from the GRD. 3. Open the sink drains and turn on spigots. This will create a continuous flow of fresh

water through the unit.

Page 16: 301-948-5538 Sales & Service -AN OPPORTUNITY …L. Inc.20910 Peachtree Road, Dickerson, Maryland 20842 (301) 948-5538 Operation This section describes the general operation of the

4. With the water running, stir the unit bottom with a long handled brush, particularly around each baffle, and at the outlet side before the final baffle. This will flush out any fine silt or other solids that may have settled. Stir 3-5 minutes, until the outgoing water is clear (while stirring, the outgoing water will be grayish white, indicating silt is flowing out.)

5. Shut off the spigots. 6. Replace the cover 7. Reset the circuit breaker for the GRD.

Monthly 1. Inspect the wiper blade. It should have a clean edge with no cuts or nicks. It should make

contact with the roller surface across the entire width of the roller. If the blade does not pass inspection, have it replaced by a service company that has been certified by GK&L.

2. Inspect the O-rings at either end of the wiper blade. They should not be loose or riding up on the edge of the fittings. They should not have any cracks or nicks. If the O-rings do not pass inspection, have them replaced by a service company that has been certified by GK&L.

3. When the power to the GRD is turned off for routine maintenance or for service, the timers are also turned off. This means that the timers should be reset as part of the monthly maintenance procedures.
