Unfortunately, hearing damage can happen at any age, and it’s important to protect the ears of the young to avoid unnecessary hearing loss. This is especially important because children have very sensitive ears that can be permanently damaged with extended exposure to noise. Follow these 3 tips to protect your children’s hearing in loud circumstances. 1. The best prevention is to stay away from extremely loud situations. Keep your children out of these types of situations if at all possible. If you’re going to a rock-n-roll show, pay the extra money for a babysitter so your kids won’t be exposed to prolonged noise at a high decibel level. Plus, you’ll have a more enjoyable experience without kids in tow. If you must have a child in a situation with high noise levels, do use ear plugs. Plugs or ear muffs are a recommended type of protection. For example, kids should wear ear plugs to a 4th of July fireworks show or if they’re visiting a construction site, or even a field trip to the symphony. If you’re at an event with loudspeakers, avoid sitting next to them and give your children ear plugs or ear muffs.

3 Tips for Protecting Your Children’s Hearing

When most people think of hearing

impairment, the elderly are the first

to come to mind. Unfortunately,

hearing damage can happen at any

age, and it’s important to protect

the ears of the young to avoid

unnecessary hearing loss. This is

especially important because

children have very sensitive ears that can be permanently

damaged with extended exposure to noise. Follow these 3 tips to

protect your children’s hearing in loud circumstances.

1. The best prevention is to stay away from extremely loud

situations. Keep your children out of these types of situations if at

all possible. If you’re going to a rock-n-roll show, pay the extra

money for a babysitter so your kids won’t be exposed to

prolonged noise at a high decibel level. Plus, you’ll have a more

enjoyable experience without kids in tow. If you must have a

child in a situation with high noise levels, do use ear plugs. Plugs

or ear muffs are a recommended type of protection. For example,

kids should wear ear plugs to a 4th of July fireworks show or if

they’re visiting a construction site, or even a field trip to the

symphony. If you’re at an event with loudspeakers, avoid sitting

next to them and give your children ear plugs or ear muffs.

2. Set all children’s toys with speakers to the lowest setting.

Children can damage their hearing by holding the toys near their

ears with the volume turned up all the way.

3. Limit the volume on headphones that children wear. Especially

if they’re using them for extended periods of time, the

headphones can damage hearing. Consider doing quiet activities

on airplanes and road trips instead of turning up the volume on

the headphones to hear a movie over the outside noise.
