#3 – Thomas Jefferson• 1757: At age 14 he

inherited from his father 5,000 acres of land in Virginia. The estate was known as Monticello.

• Attended the College of William and Mary

• 1762: graduated from college.

• 1767: began to practice law. (lawyer)

• 1769 – 1779: served in the Virginia legislature.

• 1772: married Martha Skelton

• 1775-1776: member of the Continental Congress.

• 1776: drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence.

#3 – Thomas Jefferson• 1779-1781: Governor of

Virginia• 1782: Wife dies• 1783-84: member of Virginias

delegation to the Confederation Congress. (Under the Articles of Confederation)

• 1784-1785: minister (diplomat) to France.

• 1789-1793: Secretary of State under George Washington.

#3 – Thomas Jefferson• 1797-1801: Vice President under John

Adams. He comes in second place during the Presidential election.

• 1801: elected President. Tied electoral votes with Aaron Burr. House of Representatives breaks the tie. They choose Jefferson as the next President.

• 1804: 12th amendment: is added to the Constitution. President and Vice President must be placed on the same political party ticket for elections.

#3 – Thomas Jefferson• 1803: Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson buys

the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon (France). Cost the U.S. 15 million dollars. Doubles the size of the U.S. at 4 cents an acre.

decision that allows the Supreme Court to have judicial review . (To determine if a law or act by Congress or the President is illegal - unconstitutional).

duel. Hamilton dies – Burr’s political career is over.

expedition takes place.
