This weekend, the desktop weaponeers took a partially printed rifle out to test how long its plastic parts survived spewing bullets. The result? Six rounds until it snapped apart. But that was also the point, the group’s founder tells Danger Room. “We knew it would break, probably,” says Cody Wilson, who heads the Wiki Weapon project. “But I don’t think we thought it’d break within six [rounds]. We thought it’d break within 20.” It’s the first live testing done by Wilson and Defense Distributed, the online collective that aims not only produce the world’s first fully 3D printed gun, or “Wiki Weapon,” but create a clearinghouse for sharing weapons blueprints over the internet . But until these early prototypes can fire more than a few rounds without breaking, they have to be tested. The pressure from firing rapidfire rounds is still too strong, though slowly firing single shots has apparently been demonstrated to last longer. The gun tested this weekend was not fully 3D printed, only partially. The only printed part was the lower receiver — or the gun’s trigger and grip — for an AR15 rifle completed with offthe shelf metal parts, which was first developed by Wisconsinbased engineer and hobbyist Michael Guslick. And the design works, technically, but is still far inferior to a standard rifle. But Wilson learned a few things about how to improve it. For this weekend’s test, Wilson’s best guess is that the force of recoil destroyed part of the plastic lower receiver, causing it to come unhinged. Wilson first fired one round to see if the gun worked, and then handed it to another member of the group. With 10 rounds in the magazine, the shooter managed to unload five. The recoil “pushes the ring back and down,” Wilson says, referring to the oshaped ring attached to the gun’s upper receiver — which cycles the bullet — and shoulder stock, creating tremendous stresses. One potential solution is reinforcing the oring, which the group detailed in a blog post . This might be done by just making it thicker, with more plastic material added to the ring’s sides where it won’t interfere with other components. The group also wants to reshape the trigger guard, boost the strength of interior pins and bolt bosses, and include custom markings — such as whether the gun is in the “safe” position — along with the printed product instead of laser printing the markings afterward. “We’ve been talking about this for months, so this is just a way of releasing some steam and doing something fun,” Wilson says. “We’ve been really heavy on the talking side of things, but we really just want to do things, you know?” For weeks, they haven’t been able to even start. In September, Wilson leased a 3D printer from additive manufacturing firm Stratasys that he planned to use to make the weapon. But it didn’t Like 1.3k Share Share 16

A group of 3D printing gunsmiths have taken another step toward making a gun you candownload off the internet. This weekend, the desktop weaponeers took a partially printed rifleout to test how long its plastic parts survived spewing bullets. The result? Six rounds until itsnapped apart.But that was also the point, the group’s founder tells Danger Room. “We knew it would break,probably,” says Cody Wilson, who heads the Wiki Weapon project. “But I don’t think wethought it’d break within six [rounds]. We thought it’d break within 20.”It’s the first live testing done by Wilson and Defense Distributed, the online collective that aimsnot only produce the world’s first fully 3D printed gun, or “Wiki Weapon,” but create aclearinghouse for sharing weapons blueprints over the internet. But until these early prototypescan fire more than a few rounds without breaking, they have to be tested. The pressure fromfiring rapidfire rounds is still too strong, though slowly firing single shots has apparently beendemonstrated to last longer.The gun tested this weekend was not fully 3D printed, only partially. The only printed part wasthe lower receiver — or the gun’s trigger and grip — for an AR15 rifle completed with offtheshelf metal parts, which was first developed by Wisconsinbased engineer and hobbyist MichaelGuslick. And the design works, technically, but is still far inferior to a standard rifle.But Wilson learned a few things about how to improve it. For this weekend’s test, Wilson’s bestguess is that the force of recoil destroyed part of the plastic lower receiver, causing it to comeunhinged.Wilson first fired one round to see if the gun worked, and then handed it to another member ofthe group. With 10 rounds in the magazine, the shooter managed to unload five. The recoil“pushes the ring back and down,” Wilson says, referring to the oshaped ring attached to thegun’s upper receiver — which cycles the bullet — and shoulder stock, creating tremendousstresses.One potential solution is reinforcing the oring, which the group detailed in a blog post. Thismight be done by just making it thicker, with more plastic material added to the ring’s sideswhere it won’t interfere with other components. The group also wants to reshape the triggerguard, boost the strength of interior pins and bolt bosses, and include custom markings — suchas whether the gun is in the “safe” position — along with the printed product instead of laserprinting the markings afterward.“We’ve been talking about this for months, so this is just a way of releasing some steam anddoing something fun,” Wilson says. “We’ve been really heavy on the talking side of things, butwe really just want to do things, you know?”For weeks, they haven’t been able to even start. In September, Wilson leased a 3D printer fromadditive manufacturing firm Stratasys that he planned to use to make the weapon. But it didn’t

work out so well, at first. Stratasys’ legal representatives, after getting wind of Wilson’s plans —and citing the “Undetectable Firearms Act,” which outlaws plastic guns that can defeat airportsecurity scanners — revoked the lease and promptly seized its printer back.That stymied Defense Distributed, but it didn’t exactly stop them. Since losing their Stratasysprinter, Wilson says he’s received help from two unnamed companies based in Austin and SanAntonio, where his group can print and test their guns, and is waiting on a federalfirearms manufacturers license, as the Undetectable Firearms Act provides an exemption forplastic gun prototypes designed by licensed manufacturers. (Stratasys does sell printers tolicensed firearms manufacturers.) Wilson has also since incorporated Defense Distributed intoa nonprofit corporation.But another reason Defense Distributed ran into trouble is the group’s public nature, and theirplans to distribute printable gun blueprints. That has gun control advocates worried. WhileWilson’s group plans to print their gun officially, the same likely won’t be true for potentiallyanyone with a 3D printer — which are becoming increasingly common — along with a fewhours to spend downloading a gun off the internet.The other question is whether you’ll be able to print a working gun, or a gun that can be usedoutside of testing it until it snaps apart. For now, that’s unsettled. But printed guns arebecoming a reality, and they’re likely only to get better.RelatedYou Might LikeRelated Links by Contextly

Actually I would call 6 bullets a very important success. Read up about a WW2 weapon

called the Liberator pistol. It was only single shot, but it cheap to mass produce and was meant to

be airdropped by the thousands into enemy territory. It had a single purpose: kill an enemy trooper

so one could take their weapon. Printable weapons could serve much the same purpose, being an

emergency tool to get a better firearm.

Why does this make you now not want to own a 3D printer? It's not going to

start spontaneously spewing out firearms.

People have always had weapons. Only way to equality is to join them.

Something else worth mentioning for those who are terrified by this: The lower receiver is

literally the the easiest piece of an AR-15 to produce, (of all the major parts). It doesn't need any

specialized machinery, even to machine a proper unit from aluminum.

When people start 3D printing barrels, primers, and brass cartridges - be afraid. LOL 20 △ ▽

Right, because all statists want to see the working man exploited.

Nice straw man, but I'm pretty sure you seriously misunderstand Socialism if you believe it to

be intrinsically anti-firearm. Statists rarely want a state in which the people do not have any

control. Firearms ensure that the populous does, in fact, maintain control whenever they feel

their rights are threatened or their political freedom is being taken from them. But this does not

mean we can not value the state AND weapons.

So what you are saying that in both China and the old Soviet Union where

Capitalism has been embraced allowing for their hard working citizens to benefit

the rewards with wealth from their own hard work is all bogus?

That becoming better off from one's own hard work and innovations is a sin and

that all people should be just lazy and stupid because the government, run by the

same stupid people, knows best?

Seriously?

A economics professor of mine many, many years back conducted a study using

our class as the experiment between socialism and capitalism.

He said that for the next three tests, all students would be given the same grade

based on the class average.

The lazy students didn't study knowing the hard working students would carry the

class .After the first test, the hard working students realized that hard work won't

reward them with good test scores, so on the 2nd test, the average class grade

was a "D".

For the 3rd test, everyone failed as no one studied because: "What was the point?"

That's socialism.

It is just human nature for the lazy to want the same things that hard working

people have. That's why the States have the Lottery.

In a true capitalistic society, lazy people starve to death allowing everyone else to

make society a better place. But human compassion won't allow the lazy to starve,

thus the seeds of socialism fosters until society becomes much like what the Soviet

Union was like before it finally collapsed.

I know quite a few individuals who have been laid off over the last 4 years. The

hard working individuals didn't stay unemployed for long as they either worked

hard to find a new job, started a new business, or had saved enough not to have to

work.

The lazy individuals are still on unemployment or other government assistance.

So, in conclusion, the ones who suffer in a capitalistic society are the ones with no

ambitions who want to be treated like slaves to the government.

In a socialist society, everyone is miserable... except for the party leaders.

Nice simplification of facts. Besides, you´re talking about communism, not

socialism.

Socialism is helping out the sick kid in class by paying some more attention to him,

making sure he doesn´t drop out just because of his disease. Giving the kid with

dyslexia extra reading help. Supplying the poorest kids with school meals so they

don´t faint from hunger during school times. Heck, enabling even the kids with poor

parents to go to school in the first place. It´s about solidarity and trying to make

society better as a whole, not being a social darwinist where as you didn´t grow up

with the right, rich, parents (Which I´m sure you have judging by your shallow

narrowmindedness and egocentric reasoning) you´re basically screwed. Survival of

the fittest and it´s your fault if you drop by the side. Nothing to do with growing up in

a third world country for instance where massive US corporations raid the natural

resources to make a quick buck. Kids work in sweatshops to just support their

families and bring you your cheap ipod and nike shoes, let alone go to school.

I dare to bet you are male, white and at least middle-class USA. Now tell me, what

if you had downs syndrome? Or another handicap? Or instead of being born in the

USA was a poor immigrant kid from for instance Vietnam, who´s parents have to

run 2 shitty jobs no one else wants for a crappy wage, just to give their kids a

chance at a better future. What if you had the bad luck of being born out of two

alcoholic, abusive parents? What chances would you have in your world?

Now if you say such solidarity can be abused by some? Of course, but does that

make being compassionate such a bad thing? There are tools to deal with such

abuse.

No, in your world the rich get richer and the rest is basically screwed. Why does

1% of the world need well over 70% of its resources? Does it make them happier?

Does it make the world a better place?

You and your economy teacher sound like proper sociopaths to be honest. Let me

guess, your economy teachers favourite authors where Ann Reid and Hayek?

Grow up and learn the world isn´t black and white.

p.s. That experiment of your teacher has nothing to do with Socialism. No where in

social-democratic thought do people say you should NOT be rewarded for hard

work. They do believe that the strongest shoulders should carry the heaviest

burden, and be proud to do so, not just shamelessly profit but also give something

back to society.

A better socialist experiment perhaps would be to have the guy with the best pair

up with the weakest, and the second best with the second weakest, and tell them

their scores would be shared to a certain degree, like the high grade kid would get

a bonus if he managed to bring the lower grade kids score up. Then the smart guy

would try his best to help the slower kid attain a better grade and if he had any

moral sense feel a great sense of reward by doing so.

And yes, even my experiment is terribly flawed.

I want to add one last thing, you say:

"The lazy students didn't study knowing the hard working students would carry the

class .After the first test, the hard working students realized that hard work won't

reward them with good test scores, so on the 2nd test, the average class grade

was a "D".

For the 3rd test, everyone failed as no one studied because: "What was the

point?""

Let´s just take this experiment as it is and take an honest look at it. Assuming the

worse performing kids ARE actually lazy (which I disagree with as you can read

above).

What if your teacher would have the bollocks to carry this experiment on long

enough? And your class would not all be a bunch of idiots who collectively did not

give a thing about failing? Don´t you think the better performing kids would actually

get active and tell the lazy ones to put in their share, and work, because their

failure didn´t affect only them but the class as a whole? I´m quite sure in this

respect that if your teacher would have let this experiment run for a longer time,

and not quit after achieving his desired result, social and peer pressure WOULD

kick in, the harder working kids would complain about the lazy ones, first to their

parents, to their teacher, then confronting the "lazy" kids themselves (if they had

any balls) and in the end the entire class would pull together and start organizing

studying sessions, etc. Your experiment just shows that pure egotism doesn´t pay

off for anyone, not for the lazy kid, but also not for the harder working ones. We all

benefit from trying to elevate society as a whole.

TLDR; Fire that lousy teacher. 1 △ ▽

The saddest thing is that everything you just said can be found in history

books that are free via public domain. There's nothing new under the sun in terms

of human behavior. If people in this country had just a basic understanding of

economic history over the last 200 years, the relationship between the people and

the government of this country would be radically different.

5 more than required to be lethal. I'd call that mission accomplished with points taken off for

not bench firing a prototype plastic firearm. Morons.

LOL. 'O shaped ring'. As if the video of the guy shooting wasn't enough to tell you these

dudes are total noobs - their terminology really seals it. That's called a buffer tower.

And it isn't noted in the article - but this was 5.7x28mm round. A unique and small pistol/sub

machine gun round that has 1/3-1/4 the energy of a the AR-15's normal 5.56x45.

Funny, I've been ****ing around with the AR-15 for 20+ years and this is the first time

I've seen it referred to as a "buffer tower". Usually we just call it "that annoying part of the

lower that sticks up so that the buffer tube can screw into it".

Nah. All of the magic in a 5.56 or 7.62 AR platform happens with the bolt carrier

group. That's why people have successfully made plastic lowers. Google "plum crazy

AR lower". Ironically, those break in the exact same spot as this printed junk.

Had they fired 5.56, it woulda broke the exact same way, albeit slightly more violently.

Really? Then why are there never London-like riots in cities here, where the

arson and looting is unopposed?

Because it would NOT be unopposed, and those who would loot and burn know that!
