EATING SALMON HELPS FIGHT CANCER

Eating salmon twice a week could protect against skin cancer, according to new research.

Omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish – which include sardines, mackerel and trout – destroy malignant cells in skin and mouth tumours while leaving healthy ones alone, experiments show. The finding could even lead to the development of aerosols or gels containing the molecules that zap skin and mouth cancers. Experiments found the omega-3 fatty acids stopped induced cell death in both early and late stages of the diseases.

Professor Kenneth Parkinson, of Queen Mary, University of London, said: „We found the omega-3 fatty acid selectively inhibited the growth of the malignant and pre malignant cells at doses which did not affect the normal cells.

Britons are currently advised to eat fish at least twice a week, including one portion of oily fish. A portion is 140g or six ounces.

The finding published online in the journal Carcinogenesis suggests they could be used in both the treatment and prevention of certain skin and oral cancers. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids cannot be made by humans in large quantities so we must acquire them from our diet.

NFL CHEERLEADER ARRESTED FOR BEATING UP

BOYFRIEND

An Iraq war veteran turned cheerleader for the Arizona Cardinals has been arrested for assaulting her boyfriend at her Scottsdale home.

Megan Welter called police for help getting her professional fighter boyfriend to leave her home after the couple argued about a flirty text message he had sent to an ex-girlfriend.

When police arrived at her home however, it was Welter who was arrested after cell phone footage recorded by her boyfriend showed the 29-year-old cheerleader hitting and scratching him and yelling: „Who is she?‟ as he pleaded with her to stop, according to 3TV.

The argument began in the early hours of Saturday, July 20, after the couple went out drinking to celebrate Welter‟s birthday.

In the 911 call, Welter claimed she was choked and had her head smashed on a ceramic tile floor. She then told the operator: „I‟m a NFL cheerleader, I cannot have …‟ before her voice trails off.

Her boyfriend, named by Right This Minute as Ryan McMahon, told police Welter thought he resented her after she aborted their baby against his wishes a month earlier.

When the couple, who have been dating for about six months, returned to Welter‟s home, they started to argue about a text message the boyfriend had sent.

As he was questioned by police outside Welter‟s home, he explained he had sent a jokey text to an ex-girlfriend who had sent him a picture of a dog. He replied with a message that read: „Are you trying to turn me on with a girl dog?‟

In footage police filmed as they interviewed him outside the house, he held out his phone and told them repeatedly that he filmed the attack, as he denied harming Welter.

In the footage he recorded, Welter can be heard demanding: „Who is she? Who is she?‟ as she scratched him and pulled his hair while he quietly asked her to stop and let him leave.

In the 911 call Welter, who spent 16 months serving her country and leading a platoon in Iraq, claimed that her boyfriend had choked her until she went dizzy, „smashed [her] head into a tile‟ and was refusing to leave the house.

ELLEN DEGENERES HOSTING OSCARS

Ellen DeGeneres will host this year‟s Oscars. DeGeneres herself announced the news Friday morning on Twitter, writing, “It‟s official: I‟m hosting the #Oscars! I‟d like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra.”

The Academy is getting an early start on next year‟s Oscar show. In April, it rehired producers Craig Zadanand Neil Meron to produce next year‟s 86th Academy Awards, which will air March 2 on ABC. The decision to bring back the two producers was made by outgoing president Hawk Koch, with the blessing of the board of governors, even though the decision is usually left to the current Academy president.

DeGeneres‟ announcement comes immediately after Cheryl Boone Isaacs was elected new president of the Academy on Tuesday. She promptly endorsed the selection of the two producers and said her first order of business was meeting with them to decide on a host.

Choosing DeGeneres, known for her kindler, gentler humor, signals that the Academy‟s next awards show will have a decidedly different tone than the 85th Academy Awards, hosted by Seth MacFarlane, who drew criticism for routines like his song about actresses‟ nudity on film.

DeGeneres previously hosted the show in 2007 and earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for her work.

FBI BUSTS 100 MILLION DOLLAR PONZI

SCHEME

A New York investment fund manager and his brother-in-law were arrested Thursday and charged with running a multimillion dollar Ponzi scheme that siphoned investors‟ money in order to finance the men‟s interest in an eastern Long Island condominium resort.

Among the bilked investors was an unnamed volunteer fire department on Long Island, which lost $600,000, court papers said. An unidentified Maryland investor lost $11 million, according to the indictment.

Brian R. Callahan, 43, and Adam J. Manson, 41, were charged in an indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court in Central Islip with wire fraud, securities fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud. Callahan also faces two counts of identity theft, according to the indictment.

Attorneys for both men entered not guilty pleas at their arraignments Thursday. Callahan was released on $2 million bond after his relatives put up three of their Southington, Conn., homes as collateral. Manson was released on $1 million bond; his father put up his Old Westbury, N.Y., home as collateral. The two men also were ordered to surrender their passports.

Magistrate Judge A. Kathleen Tomlinson made an exception to a standard order requiring the two men to stay away from each other, saying because they were related by marriage _ Callahan is married to Manson‟s sister _ they would be permitted to attend family functions while awaiting trial. Tomlinson, however, instructed both men they were not to discuss the case outside the presence of their attorneys. Neither man spoke to reporters after the court proceeding.

Callahan, Manson and Callahan‟s wife, Sheri Manson Callahan, were named in a 2012 Securities and Exchange Commission complaint related to the same scheme. Manson Callahan was not named in the federal criminal indictment unsealed Thursday.

FIGHTS OVER FREE ALEXANDER WANG CLOTHES

When Alexander Wang unleashed 100 of his fans into a room full of free clothes and told them to grab as many items as they physically could, absolute chaos ensued.

Billed in an e-mail invitation as a „one-time-only, undisclosed special event‟, the free-for-all last month saw men and women having cat fights, ripping items from each other‟s hands and crawling on hands and knees in a frenzied scramble for the free T by Alexander Wang goods.

A hilarious video of the event has captured everything from the line that stretched the length of two New York avenues, to the wreckage of the room after it had been gutted by invitees, demonstrating just how dedicated the designer‟s fans are.

On July 13, dozens of fashion-forward men and women lined the streets of Manhattan‟s Meatpacking District, gearing up for the mysterious event.

When they are finally told that they are about to be unleashed into a free-for-all in which they can take as many clothes as they want, they jump up and down and scream with excitement.

The video then shows the crowd running frantically through a double door, their jaws dropping as they witness the rack and racks of clothes inside.

Moving in slow motion, they pour into the room, pushing each other aside to get to the freebees.

A violent cat fight breaks out as two women scramble for the same red shirt, and a fashionista who was too slow off the mark gets trampled as two men fight their way to the racks.

The Alexander Wang fans sport hilariously bloodthirsty expressions as they embark on their mission, showing just how desperate they are to come away with the most designer stuff.

And the video, directed by Jawbreaker director Darren Stein, is made all the more humorous by the dramatic classical music playing in the background.

Once the bulk of the hangers have been unclothed, the crowd moves on to a tower of unmarked boxes in the center of the room.

SOMALI PIRATES CHARGED

A jury recommended Friday that three Somali pirates be sentenced to life in prison in the slayings of four Americans aboard their yacht off the coast of Africa.

Prosecutors had sought the death penalty, but a federal jury in Norfolk, Va., recommended the only other possible sentence for Ahmed Muse Salad, Abukar Osman Beyle and Shani Nurani ShiekhAbrar. Formal sentencing will be this fall.

The three men were among 19 who boarded the Quest in February 2011 in hopes of taking the Americans back to Somalia and ransoming them for millions of dollars. The plan fell apart when the U.S. Navy began shadowing the sailing vessel.

SHERLOCK SEASON 3 TRAILER

The first trailer for season three of British series Sherlock has hit the web.

The teaser, which BBC aired at the end of an encore broadcast of the season-two finale episode “The Reichenbach Fall,” shows Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) alive and well, while his partner John Watson (Martin Freeman) enjoys a fancy dinner. What will Watson‟s reaction be when he discovers Sherlock‟s well-being? Looks like he‟s in for the shock of a lifetime.

At Sherlock‟s Comic-Con panel in July, executive producer Steven Moffat premiered a previously unseen (and touching) season-three scene between Sherlock and Watson, and revealed that the season-three premiere, “The Empty Hearse,” focuses on the impact of Sherlock‟s faked death on Watson.

It was also announced recently that Borgen star Lars Mikkelsen, brother to Hannibal‟s Mads Mikkelsen, was cast as the villainous Charles Augustus Magnussen.
