ware for your law office. You've heard all the stories about software that made legal work faster, less costly and of higher quality. The problem is se

lecting the software that does the good things for the office without the un

expected negative surprises. The directory that follows lists

software?and here is how to find the software that is right for you or your firm:

Pinpoint responsibility for

making the software decision. Mod ern software is like another partner in your firm. You need to take the decision v?ry seriously.

Learn what features good soft ware has. You will be surprised at the features you didn't think to ?sk for.

Carefully assess which of these features your office needs and how you will use the software. Remember that software is part of a total law of fice system?a system of accounting, or contract creation, or litigation management.

Use all the tools available to as sess the value of the software. Hire a consultant if you can't do the work

yourself. Use ABA-approved soft ware to ensure that most bugs are re moved and the software works in law offices. A list of this software and full reports on each approved piece is available from LTAC at (312) 988 LTAC. (ABA-approved vendors carry the LTAC logo next to their listings in the directory.) Join the user groups in the ABA Section of Economics and read the section's publications on software.

Look for the following features in software: A sound education pro gram of some kind or another, good references from other users, good au dit trails and checks on the data you input to make sure it's correct, clear and usable reports and documents produced by the software, and secu rity against access or changes to your data or documents. For a list of fea tures you ought to look for in specific kinds of software, contact LTAC and order a set of guidelines.

Compare the software. Try it in your office. Try it with your data.

Make sure it's easy to use. Assume that your use will double or triple in the next three years and that will even

tually be used in the firm by lawyers in the firm, not just paralegals, clerks, administrators and secretaries.

Buy from a firm that will im prove the software. Every month new features appear in software and a dy namic software company will give you those features. Why settle for a word processor that merely redlines with slashes, when you can have one that uses actual red lines on a color screen? How about a closing system, or a time-accounting system or a doc ument assembler that lets you put in visible notes near your entries so that you can remember why you put the entries there? Look for regular im provements and updates.

Expect to pay for what you get. Low-cost systems can't possibly offer you the full service and technical as sistance of the more expensive prod ucts. Nor can the vendors match the system to your needs. Computer soft ware is very similar to legal ser vices?expertly written, efficient and complete systems cost more than others. Low-cost systems often have hidden costs that arise when add-ons are needed.

Good luck with your software choices. Don't forget the many ways the ABA can help you make those choices.
