1. Keep mosquitoes away by planting lemongrass. Get the mature plant from your grocery store, remove the dead parts, trim the top and place in water. Keep in a well lit area for a few weeks till you see the roots develop, then plant.

2. Get some glow-in-the-dark paint and paint decorative planters to place along garden paths, for cheap and alternative lighting along walk ways.

3. Use an old kayak, wheelbarrow or bathtub for planting herbs, vegetables or other delicious edibles.

7. Plant tall sunflowers or palms, in a circular shape on a part of lawn, to create an outdoor room for a secluded spot to relax.

9. Hang an inexpensive grapevine wreath from a tree branch and rest a terracotta flowerpot saucer inside it, to be used as a birdbath.

10. Lean an old, wooden step ladder against a wall and fix lots of small flower pots to the rungs. You could try ladders of varying heights and widths leaned along the length of a fence or wall.

11. Position an old, large mail box in a handy part of the garden for storing often used gardening tools and gloves.

12. Paint the names of plants or vegetables on flat rocks, to be placed in garden beds to help mark what you planted there.

13. Plant a sign post, using a round wooden pole and nail multiple pointed wooden slats, painted various color, each marking and pointing in the directions of all the places you have been.

14. Hang an old window frame in the garden. Nail a board inside the frame and paint with chalkboard paint. Hang a small bucket with chalk and duster nearby. List your garden jobs.

15. Nail a large, old work shoe to a tree to be used by birds as a nest, or transform it into a bird feeder.

16. Drill or nail small holes into a large plastic bottle. Plant the bottle neck-deep into soil next to newly planted plants. Water the plants by running the hose into the bottles until full. Reduces evaporation and gets the water down to where it's most needed.

17. Paint a rubber car tyre in a bright color and hang it on a wall or fence, to use as a planter.

18. Attach a rain gutter along the rail of your outdoor deck, and use the length of the gutter for planting decorative plants or herb for the kitchen.

19. Set an old fireplace against the house or fence and plant a garden in front of it with plants framed, plus put some smaller planters on the mantelpiece.

21. Use Alphonse Karr Bamboo as a screen to create privacy in your landscape or as a living fence to divide space. Perfect to grow in pots to contain their spreading.

23. Stand a collection of various sized candles inside a small fish tank as a centre piece for an outdoor dining table.

24. Roll up paper bags, formed into makeshift bowls, and nestle them next each other, inside a low edged basket tray. Fill the bags with an assortment of dry snacks. At the end of the party, simply tip them into the bin. No washing up!

25. Use 3 narrow bi-fold doors and large hinges to make a decorative folding screen to hide unsightly views or give privacy. Use different colors/decoration on each side of the screen, turn the screen around when you want a change for each season.

26. Mirrors are not just for the bathroom. Find low cost, decorative mirrors to hang on your decking or in a strategic place in the garden. Hang in groups or place a single mirror behind a candle for a dramatic effect.

27. Paint bare tree branches and arrange them in a large vase or earthen pot. This can be used indoors, on an outdoor deck or even in the garden to fill a gap.
