History

The term Equal Employment Opportunity was created by President Lyndon B. Johnson when he signed Executive Order 11246 on September 24, 1965, created to prohibit federal contractors from discriminating against employees on the basis of race, sex, creed, religion, color, or national origin. In more recent times, most employers have also added sexual orientation to the list of non-discrimination.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a lawsuit against Target on Thursday, August 20, 2009 in Santa Ana, California, for denying a disabled employee equal rights.

The retail giant discriminated, Jeremy Schott, a part-time employee at Targets Foothill Ranch location.

Target dramatically reduced Schotts scheduled work hours because of his cerebral palsy and limited intellectual functioning medical conditions.

Target managers were aware of his condition and his need for accommodation when they hired him.

They neglected to alert Schottsjob coach and his parents of any work-related issues.
